To IrishCanadian: Jesus' words [and many traditional revelations worldwide] "say" that there is a reward for the Good but DO NOT PROVE IT. Thus, even with Jesus' wonderfully hopeful words, the promise of the Reward is a BIG matter of Faith. We see this all the time that this Faith is shaken by worldly events just like this tragedy that is discussed, and prayerfully lamented, here in this thread.
A Promise which requires Faith, rather than Proof, is exactly God's way of making the choice a fair one. If there were no revelations, God would be asking too much of us to have Faith and choose the Good even in the face of bad things, and other choices which would immediately reward us in self-oriented ways. God has, brilliantly of course, designed and maintained this Universe and our relationship to it, so as to place each of our consciences on a "knife-edge" of true free decision-making. Each is constantly challenged by these circumstances according to whether they, and their families and true "Samaritan neighbors" can handle [spiritually] whatever comes. God refuses to Prove that He or the Afterlife exists in order to maintain the Plan, BUT HE GIVES THE GAME AWAY to the discerning by maintaining the constant "impossible" knife edge of our lives and our doubts.
Whenever I see that His Universe has placed me on another such knife edge decision, I laugh out loud, look to Heaven, and say: HAH!! I SEE YOU NOW!!
