I always liked Regis Philbin, but I never knew that he is a Notre Dame man. He did a phone interview with ESPN this morning talking about the 11-0 Irish. He was talking about how so many people knock Notre Dame. The best part was when he said (I'm paraphrasing, but not much) "people have called us arrogant for staying independent, many on this network have called Notre Dame irrelevant." Good for Regis, calling ESPN out on their latent prejudice against Notre Dame.

Oh yeah, Regis has been an ND man for a long time. Glad to hear him stick it to ESPN.

He got his start in TV in south bend back in the 60's I believe. He would always talk about Notre dame on his shows. Kelly would just nod.

Regis used to rep ND hard when he was hosting Millionaire. Not that I ever watched it, but he mixed in a lot of Notre Dame stuff on his old morning show.

Yeah he said he would get looks from the producer on Regis & Kelly and Regis & Kathie Lee when he would start to get all ND crazy. Love it.

I heard Regis took on Chuck Norris in a street fight, knocking him out with one left hook. Just sayin', the dude is awesome

He goes to the Reebok sports club that my brother works at in NYC and I said hi to him in passing one day. I didn't realize he was that little.

Regis is one of the best ambassadors (and graduate) ND has ever had!
i love regis and would see him walking around nyc every now and again over the yrs i always gave him a "go irish!" yell and without fail he acknowledged it every time.
he did his morning gig al those yrs but he struck gold with that millionaire show (still cashing in on it) good for him local nyc boy, nd grad, and media ICON!

I actually had an opportunity to interview Regis for an article back in his days at Who wants to be a millionaire? It was back in my Navy days when an all armed forces edition of the show was being recorded. I was the public affairs guy in charge of the event for the Navy. This took place right before Weis was named coach. Regis wanted Gruden in a bad way. I had 15 minutes with him and we talked about ND football for 10 of them. Back stage at the entrance where he walked onto the stage, he had a "Play like a champion today" sign. I watched him take the stage and he reached up and tapped it as he was introduced.

He is five foot nothing, one hundred and nothing without a speck of athletic talent. Oh wait, I am thinking of another ND grad.

I remember watching Regis on the Regis & Kathy morning Show, and we were coming up to a big game [vs someone like USC or FSU] where we were WAY underdogs. Fans from the opposing team began sending Regis their gear and he, as a good sport, acknowledged it.

Notre Dame then walloped the favored opponent. The next show day, there was Regis with a possum-eating-sh!t smile on his face to start the show. He began taking one item after another, looking at it, and throwing it far away from the desk saying: "I guess I won't be needing THIS anymore! I guess I won't be needing THIS anymore... " etc etc etc, as Kathy Lee Gifford cringed.

Hilarious, well-played, just enough smiles to make it clear "don't mess with Notre Dame in my house" and still be likable.
