Marcus Freeman is paid ~$5 million a year, essentially half of the coaches at the top of the sport. We should have the highest-paid supporting cast in the country with how much we are saving on him vs BK. Its inexcusable to not pay top dollar for coordinators when you have ~$4M-$5M to spend than other blue blood programs.

Is that number known for sure?

Here's where they fucked up -- they should've had buyout money from Rees. But because they're clowns, they didn't enforce a buyout on him, so they didn't have the money to pay Ludwig's buyout. It's supposed to be sum zero.
ND is the "Teacher! You forgot to give us homework!" kid. Such a dork move to not enforce the buyout.

I'm also confused about how ND didn't know what Ludwig's buyout was before they brought him to campus. Was there ever any explanation provided on that?

From what I remember, Ludwig came to campus, was offered, and it appeared that he was going to accept - and then this buyout came out of no where. Is it realistic that ND wouldn't have known that number prior to flying him up from Utah?

He signed a new deal right before visiting ND, and from what I’ve heard/read, ND got the old contract that had a small buyout.

Isn't "Savy" Jack a lawyer?! How'd he miss that in the contract? If he wasn't on the way out, I'd say fire his ass. Unacceptable not to get a buyout from Bama for Tommy, and then refuse to pay one for Ludwig.

I've always thought about the buyout thing as not necessarily about whether or not they had the money, it was about straight up not knowing that the buyout for Ludwig was what it was.

Besides them being clowns, why wouldn't they enforce the buyout?

ND's struggles coupled with Utah doing pretty well with a third string pig farmer at QB, it was inevitable sadly.

You're right, though. What's done is done.
i could understand pointing to stats from this year saying hey wish we had this or that in our offense but its the contract botch thats been covered ad nauseum.

To be fair, ND didn't balk at Ludwig's salary. It was his buyout. I think ND has proven their willingness to pay the salary these days...
Don't think you're wrong, but in this day and age the buyout money has to be part of the deal if you want to get your dude, right?

Did they enforce the buyout for Kelly?

Or Ludwig/Ludwig's agent. Nobody at ND has the authority to get that contract. It was given to them.
If he's interested, they aren't giving ND the wrong contract.

What else is there to discuss? This screw-up torpedoed what might have been a special season. It can't be discussed enough imo.

By far one of Notre Dame’s stupidest policies. I think they did that with Kelly too.

Well, I’m sure it’s not on the books. But declining to take the buyout money has been their SoP when coaches leave. Refusing free money is deeply stupid.
Does it at least buy good will with the coach? So they might come back? If not what’s the point?

Or at the bare minimum 50%.

That's the only thing that I can think of. Maybe there is an expectation that if you are upfront and honest about interviewing on the front end, they won't insist on the fee. Would encourage open communication so there are no surprises on ND's end. Maybe gives ND the last word, if they want it.

I really am grasping at straws here.
