Sucks how much alcohol has affected ND football in the past 2 years or less. Even on a more tragic scale going back to Matt James last spring when he died during Senior Week.

This will factor into his punishment, which as I'm thinking over the possibilities seems more and more like it's going to be harsh.

Didn't Florida have a kid pass out behind the wheel at a stop light and he sat out one game and then was back for their bowl game. Either last year or 2 years ago?

2 game suspension? He might be suspended for the whole season. I forget who it was, but a couple years ago there was a football/lacrosse player who got suspended for the whole season because of dui, and he ended up transferring to Maryland. Yeatman maybe?

Floyd really effed up.

Not that its right, but im sure most of us have....my only thing is i did it before i was 21 and lacked the maturity to make the right decision. I can honestly say me and most of my buddies havent stepped behind the wheel intoxicated after we turned 21. Floyd obviously needs someone in his ear telling him to do the right things which in my opinion is dangerous

21 isn't some mythical age where maturity is granted by some god like creature, and a lack of maturity doesn't excuse the choice to drink and drive. Drinking and driving is the same thing whether you are 10, 21 or 87. Using a lack of years on this planet as an excuse for making such a mistake is wrong! Accepting the consequences for his choice is a step to maturity.

I hope that Floyd gets zero special treatment, after all of the facts are out. If he is found guilty, then regardless of how close to the limit he was, the punishment should be for DUI not reckless endangerment/driving. I was guilty of reckless driving, and it was because I decided I needed to make blue smoke out of my tires.

This is bad for the team, he is a phenomenal wide receiver. The other receivers have now been presented with the challenge of filling Floyd's shoes. Hopefully, one or more of them accepts the challenge.

Had Floyd been driving a lawn tractor, golf cart, or Segway I may have been able to take a lighter-hearted approach towards the incident, but he was operating a full sized, nearly two ton, people killer, family destroyer...and if he is guilty, he needs to be punished as such.

Yeah it was it was couple years ago. I forget his name but he was a starting DE for Florida, and he was suspended for one game, which happened to be the SEC championship game. They lost.

Worst case scenario-- He gets suspended the entire season--- What happens next? Can he still declare for the draft? or does he have to come in as an undrafted* free agent?

The problem is drunk driving is simple to do. Pretty much nobody admits they are too drunk or buzzed to drive. Or you get drunk in a way where it hits you later. You can't go out drinking without a plan to have someone be the DD. I work restaurants and see it all the time. Your ability to self-regulate goes out the window. I don't look at Floyd as some kind of low-life, but driving drunk is serious stuff. It's a lapse in judgement, but one serious enough for serious punishment. How many people with DUI's get multiple ones? A lot. That says something.

That's why I think cars should eventually have some sort of alcohol detector. I read that in Japan they are developing technology that can detect your BAC through your skin when touching the steering wheel. I just feel no matter how much you punish drunk drivers there are still young people drinking for the first time who are going to get behind the wheel. Take the decision out of people's hands.

If Floyd was at BYU, he would be kicked off the team for the whole season. That is a little extreme, but he is not above the program, 2 games minimum, drunk driving is serious.

He wouldn't be eligible for this draft. He would be eligible in the supplemental draft, but not sure if there will be one with the CBA and stuff.

Sorry if I sound like I'm trivializing DUI's. I guess in my eyes I see it as sort of a given that any drunk driver could have killed somebody. But I can't imagine what you are going through. Sorry for your loss man.

This isn't Floyd's 2nd DUI. He was in the car with somebody else who got one over a year ago and Floyd had been involved in a fight that night but he wasn't driving. Luckily the whole DUI process is really grueling so hopefully Floyd learns his lesson and becomes a better person for it.

This may affect his draft status but not significantly. I feel more sorry for ND players who won't be going to the NFL that were hoping to make a BCS run this coming season and now that might be in jeopardy because of Floyd's bad judgment.

This. His actions were selfish and have the potential to affect the entire team. That is not cool.

I just have one question for Big Mike. Are you telling me that you could not find anyone in South Bend to drive your a$$ home??? You are the biggest name in South Bend. You could ask any person in that city for a ride at any time of day and they would take you home.

I don't blame any college kid for having some adult beverages, espcecially since I did the same. However, getting behind the wheel afterwards is STUPID!!!! No other way to describe it.

Use your head!!! You have way too much riding on 2011 to go throwing it away!!! Your senior season is like a 12 game interview for your new job: NFL WR. You now have likely just shortened that interview by a couple games. I bet Mama Floyd is not too happy today.

I don't know why he was driving in the first place.....get a CO-ED or CO-EDs to take you home... I don't get it... I played at a school that is no where near Notre Dame as far a football celebrity...and I never had to worry about a ride.

Jonesy beat me to it...we are on the same page buddy!

4 Games is a bit harsh. That’s almost as much as the Ohio State crew, and let’s face it this isn’t as bad. I believe it will be either 1 or 2 games. My vote would be 2 games and make him volunteer to be Zibby's sparring partner for a while (maybe he will get some sense knocked into him).

Its worse - Ohio State broke NCAA rules, he broke the law. I do like the idea of him getting in the ring with Zib though.

This may have been mentioned, but are either of the two incoming freshman Atkinson or D. Daniels early enrolees? They might see the field earlier than expected.

...If I look at Yeatman as a template...Big Mike is Done. Does it matter in what order these things happened, DUI - Underaged Consumption? I don't think so.

I like Mike. He seems to be a good kid. He busted his A$$ to get to ND. But he has some issues with judgement. I'd be willing to bet if Mike was headed somewhere knowing he would be drinking, he would have made arrangements. I think he had a few drinks, and thought nothing of it, now being 21. Sometimes you go places not intending to drink, but you do. You need to be self-aware enough to know when situations change, and say...I drank, I need a ride.

I feel bad for him, but its clear to me, no matter what the situation, the seriousness of drinking and driving didn't register...I suppose it will now.

I'll let ND decide...but like I said, there is a template that isn't very old for how this gets dealt with. If that is the outcome, the QB derby just took on an even bigger sense of urgency (if that is possibble).

So what you're saying is ...This worst case scenario could cost him millions of dollars by being basically forced into the supplemental draft.

Does a team dismissal/suspension give him a release from the program? If so I guess he could end up playing for a FCS of D2 school. Obviously, All speculation but I was just thinking about it...

Well put...Now we just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
