Florida guard Erving Walker charged in theft of taco - ESPN
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida basketball player Erving Walker was arrested early Friday in connection to a $3 taco stolen from a Gainesville street vendor.

Walker was charged with retail petit theft and resisting an officer without violence at 1 a.m. after Gainesville Police Department officers apprehended him after a foot chase that also involved several police cars. Walker was given a notice to appear April 19.

According to an arrest report, Walker ordered and received a taco from a street vendor on Main Street but fled without paying. Police chased Walker onto University Avenue, at which time an officer shouted, "Police! Stop!" The report stated that Walker looked back at the officer but continued to flee.

The 22-year-old Walker was eventually caught several blocks later. According to the report, Walker admitted to stealing the taco but said he was "just playing around."

Walker finished his career at Florida last weekend when the Gators lost to Louisville in the West Region final. He is the school's all-time leader in assists (547) and is fourth in scoring (1,777 points).

Cops need to get a life. If that happened where I went to college, a cop would have pulled out a $5 and given it to the vendor. If they prosecute this thing I will lose all faith in humanity. And NOTHING should happen to this kid, except maybe a couple extra suicides at the next team workout.

Can't say I agree here... are you saying the cop should pull a fiver out of his own wallet and give it to the vendor to cover for some drunk? Absolutely not... the cop and the vendor were just doing their jobs. I'm sure they both had places they'd rather be. This kid acted like a punk... he could use a couple days in jail to think about what life as a late night hot-dog vendor would be like.

Haha. They actually make decent money when they charge $3 for a 50 cent taco and sell like 200 in a night.

Agree 100%. Don't blame the cops for the kid acting like an idiot. Not saying he should be prosecuted or anything like that Rhode Island, but for you to blame the cop and for you to lose faith in humanity sounds like a you problem and not a problem with humanity at all.

I know a lady that owns two hot dog carts and seems to be good/lucky at investing (I also suspect she knows how to avoid paying some taxes). She has season tickets for football, baseball, hockey and the guy that lives next to her is a professional hockey player...she has pictures of herself holding the Stanley Cup in her driveway....the life of a hot dog cart vendor.

Yeah risking your career for a fraking $3 taco. That seems like a great idea.

We as a society take things way too seriously. Was this a foolish thing to do? Yeah, obviously. But assuming it was an isolated incident, the community should have a better way of dealing with it than getting into a police chase over a taco. We should have some tolerance for college-aged kids being drunk and stupid, because that is what college-aged kids do. There are ways to deal with it that don't involve the criminal justice system.

One example of how the community could deal with it is to arrange for the kid to work with the vendor after the bars get out one night to see what that is like. Wouldn't that be better than throwing the kid in jail to think about what being a taco vendor is like?

We respond to any act of disobedience with the same arsenal, whether the disobedience is major or minor. We don't seem to differentiate between fun, stupid things and sociopathic things. I don't want to live on a planet where an isolated occurrence of stealing a $3 food good is a good reason to use government resources to prosecute an individual in the criminal justice system. Hell, the police probably burned more than $3 worth of gas chasing after him.

You are absolutely correct. So short sighted on an athletes part to do something like this.

Wait, was it a fish taco? That would be okay then-- he wanted a fish taco so a snatch prevailed.

So this MAY exclude the criminal justice system from being involved, but now what government agency and resource is going to determine his penance, assign his penance, and oversee his penance that you speak of??? And this vendor (the victim of a crime...whether you agree with it or not) is now responsible for explaining his work, demonstrating his work, and overseeing the work...of a man who already unlawfully stole from him???

Sounds like a grand plan.

3 bucks or 50 the bottom line is he stole it. Don't care what the explanation is, he obviously ordered the taco knowing he wasn't going to pay for it that's theft of services. Is he young dumb and full of ___ sure he is. But young dumb asses grow up to be old dumb asses if the lesson isn't taught now.
