Fair enough.

Regardless, I don't believe there will be much (if any) drop off at quite a few positions. This kind of depth is going to pay huge dividends late in games and late in the season.

The luxury of such a beasty D line is that there won't be any major drop off late in the game let alone on any downs when the starters are winded...

I expect to see lots of 4 man fronts too...so in a way that #2 DT really is another starter situationally.

Yes, I agree. there will be several times in the game where you will see Nix and Cwyner side-by-side on the line. Just because ND runs a base 3-4 doesnt mean there wont be times in games where the 4 man front will be the best option. Its also good as a change of pace defense where you can throw different coverage looks and blitz looks at the opposing offense because they will be prepped to face a 3-4 all week in practice.

I dont think it matters too much on the d-line about who is #2 or #3 with as much depth as we have on the d-line, the coaches will plug players in all game based on their strengths in certain situation.

I can't recall us ever having two NTs in at the same time. In our even front looks, it's usually a NT + the WDE playing a 3-tech on the inside.

nose guard will be one of those positions this year where being named the starter is purely for bragging rights cuz it will be a position with pretty equal stats, atleast early on.

I do recall seeing Lynch lined up inside at the Spring game quite a bit.

True. If I recall right, that was due to his lining up as a WDE and getting moved inside to a 3-tech when the Cat OLB put his hand down.

Whiskey is right. I never remember seeing Ian Williams and Sean Cwynar on the field together. When Fleming puts his hand down it's makeshift 4-3 front. 2 DEs 1 DT and LB.

Now does that mean we won't see 2 DTs this year, I don't know. You hear the coaches constantly talk about the depth and last that was an issue, which could explain why no 2 DT formations were used. I think you will see on a 3rd and 15 Ethan slide in and Lynch come on the outside, which is a true 4-3. That is something that could not have happened last year.

I think we might see some 2 DT formations this year. We have the depth to do it...I'd love to see Hafis and Sean on the inside with EJ and KLM outside.

I'd love to keep this thread accurate and updated throughout the season...so feel free to let me know when things change if I don't have it proper.

Did Kelly say that Cwynar was starting at NT? I only saw clips of the press conference yesterday and of course it was just about Dayne and Tommy.

Should I modify the OP to show a proper 3 deep depth chart?

Ok...so I did modify the OP a bit...some 3 deeps are listed...
some have placeholder ###'s in the place of names...

We'll fill those out as they come along.

So please let me know if anything should get swapped and if I should fill in any of those placeholders yet.

Thanks guys!

Offense
QB-.......(1) Crist.........(2) Rees.........(3) Hendrix/Golson
RB-.......(1) Wood.......(2) Gray..........(3) McDaniel/Atkinson III
TE-.......(1) Eifert........(2) Ragone.....(3) Welch
W-........(1) Floyd........(2) Smith........(3) Walker
Z-.........(1) Riddick......(2) Toma........(3)Farley
X-.........(1) Jones.......(2) Goodman...(3) Daniels
LT-.......(1) Martin.......(2) Lombard....(3) ###
LG-.......(1) Watt........(2) Nuss..........(3) Hegarty
C-.........(1) Cave.........(2) M. Golic.....(3) Heggie
RG-.......(1) Robinson...(2) Carrico*.....(3) ###
RT-.......(1) Dever.......(2) Nichols*.....(3) ###

For the reasons I mentioned in the notes, it's a little misleading to portray the depth chart this way. I believe the staff ranks OTs and OGs regardless of which side they play on. For instance, OT depth is probably (1) Lombard; (2) Nichols; (3) N Martin; and (4) Prestwood. OG depth is probably (1) Nuss; (2) Carrico; (3) Hegarty; (4) Hanratty. We should expect those guys to play in that order regardless of Right or Left designation.

Also, I think McDaniel is the clear #3 RB right now.

Defense
SDE-.....(1) KLM..........(2) Tuitt*.......(3) Schwenke
NT-.......(1) Cwynar.....(2) Nix............(3) H. Williams
WDE-....(1) Johnson....(2) Lynch........(3) ###
DOLB-...(1) Shembo....(2) Spond.......(3) Niklas
MILB-....(1) Te'o.........(2) McDonald*.(3) Moore
WILB-...(1) Fox...........(2) Calabrese...(3) ###
COLB-...(1) Fleming.....(2) Filer*.........(3) I. Williams
BCB-.....(1) Gray.........(2) Wood........(3) ###
FCB-.....(1) Blanton.....(2) Jackson......(3) ###
SS-.......(1) Slaughter..(2) Motta........(3) ###
FS-.......(1) Smith........(2) McCarthy...(3) ###

3rd WILB is Utupo. 3rd BCB is probably Brown; 3rd FCB is probably J. Atkinson. 3rd FS is Collinsworth.

Prestwood can't play this year though right?

How would you like me to portray the OT and OG depth?

Other changes have been made.

I just like wasting time on stuff like this...organizing.

Correct, so if you're looking only to list people who can play, he probably shouldn't be on the list.

How would you like me to portray the OT and OG depth?

It depends on what you want to show. If you're looking to list who is likely to play and in what order, you might list the 2nd ROG and LOG as Nuss/ Carrico and the 2nd ROT and LOT as Lombard/ Nichols.

But if you want a tidy chart with as many players accounted for as possible, then you're probably going about it the right way.

Whoa...so T.J. may not get the start?
Kind of surprised...pleasantly!

Editing will wait for more concrete confirmation of course!

Jones is #2

Riddick is not considered an outside WR.

^

(1) Floyd; (2) Jones; (3) Goodman; (4) Smith for outside receiver, apparently.

It just means that Goodman is distancing himself from Smith. If Daniels overtakes anyone this season, it'll probably be Smith now.

Anyone else like the combo of Gray and Blanton, at the corners?

Neither of them is particularly talented in coverage, but if the line gets pressure like we think they will, the Corners will only have to cover for maybe 2-3 seconds. And both of them are pretty good against the run. I like it!!

I'm a big fan. It's their backups that concerns me.

Kelly says they expect CB Gary Gray to play like one of the best corners in the country

I would add the walk on safety as the third SS. Chris Silvo or something like that.
