During the offseason, one of the many popular topics of discussion was the redemption of Duval Kamara. His time for redemption is now.

Although it could have happened under better circumstances, Kamara now has his best shot to step up and prove himself. If he can rise above and beyond the competition, Duval just might leave his mark.

And if he proves himself as another deep threat...look out. Imagine next year, where defense have to find a way to stop three deep threats and a solid tight end.

Duval is my favorite candidate to be the new wide receiver.

On a side note: please, no Robby Parris. He has zero speed and, in my opinion, overrated hands.

I respectfully disagree, duval is a possesion reciever not a deep threat. The ones that need to rise to the occasion is Walker, Goodman, and Shaq. Duval should go across the middle on third an seven or shorter and catch fades in the redzone, and block those are his stengths. I don't want us to try to make him something he is not.

Rudolph and Golden will have to carry much of the bulk. You can't expect someone that hasn't been in very much to come up with huge numbers this first game out. It will be KR, GT and then a mix of Kamara, Parris, Goodman, Walker, and Evans. I doubt it will be ONE guy from those last 5 who steps up and becomes "the man" to replace Floyd.

Well said. In fact, at Weis's presser today, he essentially said the exact same thing - you cannot replace Floyd with one guy, but he believes that the combination of second and third string receivers will come together to help get our offense through a difficult time in Floyd's absence.

Interestingly, Weis also commented on Shaq's great speed - he basically told one reporter that what Shaq lacks in being a great wide-out he makes up for in speed, so if defenses want to come over and double on Tate, that leaves Shaq to be covered by a single corner and sets up the possibility of the deep ball, much like it did with Floyd. Of course, Shaq may not have Floyd's hands, but we'll have to see.

Still, Weis also said that the definitive second wide-out to start the game is going to be Duval. The rest will be competing for playing time behind Tate and Duval.

Kamara will get lots of PT because he has gotten praise for his blocking. He is mostly a possesion reciever but hecan onceagain step up as a red zone threatand utilize his size

I think another part of the stepping up equation is going to be Clausen's accuracy. If he is able to keep up the accuracy that he's shown so far, that should put less pressure on the less-experienced WRs to have to try to make circus catches.

...

Deja vu all over again.

Didn't this conversation take place in November '08 when Floyd was lost with a season ending injury?

Actually at this point a possession receiver is better than the deep threat.

The TEAM needs clock chewing offensive drives not 2 minute drives. Charlie opened with the no huddle flood the field with WRs offense last week. It worked too well. TOP suffers and the beleaguered defense is back on the field too soon.

Hammer away at them with 7-12 yard stuff with an occasional long ball to keep them on their toes. Move the chains, own the clock. Win the game.

I totally agree they need that but duval isn't the answer for deep balls but they have enough talent for the deep ball

There is that darn game management again.

It will be interesting to see how they can overcome this loss. But the best thing the Irish have is the fact that not they can put 5 out there and let Jimmy pick and choose. So Jimmy is the key, and he needs to be the one to step up and lead the Irish. If he continues to pick apart defenses, the running game will open up and the entire offense will be able to fill the void

I honestly think the fate of our passing game depends on another receiver emerging as a deep threat. I would love to see Shaq go deep a couple times against Purdue and try and out-run a corner. I think that if we can prove to defenses that they can't keep a safety over Tate every play then our offense really wont be crippled by the injury to Floyd. We've already shown that we can run the ball effectively which of course helps in terms of keeping the safeties away from Tate as well. I think as long as one of our receivers can step up as a somewhat dangerous deep threat, our offense can still put up 30+ on anyone

Agreed.

What I've noticed about Parris is that he rarely makes a grab with his hands. Always with his body. Thus, he drops some of the passes where he has to extend his hands.

I know none of the other recievers can replace Floyd, but we might be suprised by Evans. I really don't think anyone expected Floyd to do what he did his freshman year.

I did. Or at least I hoped he would. Maybe I was just being a Twin Cities "homer" --- until I saw his first catch.

Kamara has all the tools to be a fantastic receiver but hes LAZY as all get out. He just needs to step it up a notch and earn his scholly. Kamara could be a very physical guy if he wanted to be. He just seems to me like he's the kinda guy that doesnt want to work hard to show his TRUE talent.

pls correct me if i am wrong, but Kamara has never been a speedy guy; i think ppl wanted him to be like plaxico buress (before he shot himself) and he just never lived up to that expectation. Kamara hasnt produced this year with a bunch of catches, but I have seen him on the field making a difference, I think he'll do fine.

Kamara and Parris are gonna get alot of PT this game because they know the system and are solid blockers. Weis has been saying that Deion and Shaq should get quite a bit of PT so let the competition begin

Tate is already a deep threat. I hope that teams do double him. Once the other receiver (whoever that may end up being) establishes himself as the possession guy, who is open 10-15 yards downfield all day long, then teams will have to give THAT corner safety help as well. Then it's Kyle Rudolph, who has some wheels for a big guy, streaking down the middle, with a linebacker trying to catch up.
