So let’s say Elston is the man. It’s a shoe in really IMO. But, if he does get a shot, what’s his defense going to look like? He’s been through a myriad of defensive schemes. Seems simple enough to continue on with what’s working, but as mentioned already, coaches have big egos. I’m guessing based off proven results he’d have a short leash regarding a change.

Stockton is a 3-4 guy. Has said, that he's been 3-4 his whole life and doesn't really know anything else.

Grinch is a 3-3-5 guy too.

Not sure if it's show stopper, but I'm sure it factors though.

Not saying I want Stockton as a DC, but I'd love him as a position coach if for instance Elston took over DC.

You know, it's completely possible Elston doesn't even want the DC position.

Tommy Rees is to the ND offense like Joe Schmidt was to the Defense... Whats Joe doing these days?

Kelly has proven recently he's basically become a flippin baller when bringing in or calling up new assistants. I'm not worried.

For me, my top three candidates are Scottie Hazelton, Seth Wallace and Jon Heacock.

Both teams run fairly similar schemes to ND. I'd lean towards Hazelton, since he has experience running defenses on his own. Also bonus points for his Santa Claus beard.

Wallace is another great candidate on the field, but the allegations brought forward about him, insulting players' intelligence is a red flag for me. Gonna need to be something Kelly addresses and weeds out.

Heacock is also up there, because despite being a 3-3-5 guy at Iowa State, he's shown to be very flexible with his scheme to accommodate the talent he has. Plenty of experience and has fielded some damn good units at ISU, in a conference generally focused entirely on offense. The main problem with Heacock is that he has coached almost exclusively defensive backs for his entire career, and never LB's from what I've found. With Joseph and Mickens already on staff, Heacock would have to be relegated to LB's unless Joseph were to potentially go with Lea to be his DC.

My guess is that Kelly goes with one of those three or goes with a similar dynamic that he has on offense. You have Joseph and Elston as co-DC's.

I was originally firmly in the Elston to DC camp, but upon examining it, it's not ideal for your DL coach to be your DC, because that's A LOT to put on Elston. It's almost always preferable to have your DC be either LB's or DB's, because it allows them to work with coverages. Joseph could be the guy who calls plays and Elston helps run practices, but meh, I think we are better off going external here.

Why is it assumed anyone already on staff will play Lea’s defense? Coaches have enormous egos....

Wallace brings baggage....look it up

Expect Kelly to go with unproven coach again

Lea, Rees, ....next

That's not exactly compelling evidence. Two unproven coaches in a tenure spanning a decade. Also have to keep in mind that Rees and Lea were fast trackers. Kelly knew that Rees was going to shoot his way up the coaching ladder, it as apparent since his playing days. Elko saw it paramount to bring Lea with him to multiple stops.

Question is, is there anybody on the defensive staff that is like Clark Lea? It's possible that Terry Joseph could be that guy. I know Elston is a common name that comes up, but taking him away from developing the DL is not ideal. I think it's possible you end up with a co-DC situation where Joseph is the playcaller and Elston is the "run defense coordinator", but I can't imagine Elston is the sole guy.

I think it's more likely ND goes with an external guy like Hazelton, Wallace or Heacock. Yeah, Wallace has baggage, so that would need to be addressed, but if it is, I'm not concerned about it. Hazelton is my top choice though.

Possible. I think he’s had as much to do with ND’s defensive renaissance as anyone. If he wanted the job I’d give it to him.

Elston, Freeman, Bateman in that order.

The more I think about it, the more I think it will be Elston or Elston + Joseph as co-DC. BK looks like he’s comfortable staying w/in the program again. Unless it’s for a huge salary bump, can being a DC at ND really do that much more for Freeman’s career arc? I mean enough to up & move your family, etc? He wants to be a HC sooner rather than later. I think he passes on ND...if BK even offers.

If Elston wants the position, I doubt he takes getting picked over by a younger candidate very lightly. He’s been w/ BK since CMU. BK reportedly wanted to give him the role when Elko left but others persuaded him to go w/ Lea. I bet his mind is already made up. Only thing to decide is whether or not to offer Joseph co-DC role so Elston can still focus on DL. If Joseph gets overlooked, Lea would be wise to bring him to Nashville as his DC.

How about Elston as DC, and either Stockton or Lea's mini-me as associate DC. That might allow Elston to stay with the DL instead of likely moving to LBs. Let Lea's mini me take over LBs. Stockton could do either.

Elston's position group has been better under the rover system than the LB group so factor that in when factoring things.

Wouldn’t they risk losing Joseph if he got passed over as associate DC? Or do you assume Lea takes him to Vandy?

He’s a sales rep for a dental company but he does the BGI stuff on the side. He does come across as a meathead but he was a helluva LB when healthy.

Yeah I think he mainly does the "instant reaction" postgame podcasts on Saturdays. I find him to offer little insight and a whole lot of "when I played...". just seems like a real kabob.

I can see that and don’t disagree. He’s like talking in a bar to an ex-player. I’d rather hear about his time at ND under Davie/Willingham vs his analysis.

I bet he & BVG would hit it off!

So Mike Goolsby is a former player and not much else.

That's a hard no. Plenty of former players out there who could probably be viable assistant coaches, both now and or in the future, but I'll pass.

Definitely keeping tabs on Crum and Stockton from this point out.

Not sure. We have a few good assistants, and I'm counting on at least one to leave. I'd like to hold onto to Lea's mini-me GA though, if the talk that he's being groomed is true. I just hope Lea doesn't take more then 1-2 guys with him.

I have a feeling Elston is happy riding out his ND tenure as Associate HC, whether or not he plans to parlay that into a HC position elsewhere remains to be seen. That said, if we stay internal, I could see Joseph getting the bump to DC and Lezynski getting the bump to LB, keeping things largely status quo which worked fairly well heading into the 2018 season.

I would feel A LOT better about losing Lea if we can manage to keep Lezynski on the staff, specifically as LB coach.

Yeah, hoping this doesn't change to a pic of TN....

I'm sure whatever happens has already been discussed with BK and both sides are in agreement of how this is going to work.... it just seems natural that Lea wouldn't raid our recruits, bad mouth ND, or mutiny our coaching ranks.... that being said I'm sure there are recruits who ND passed on but Clark loves and coaches who Lea and BK want to see move upward.

Yep. I'm hoping that Kollie's decision to stick with ND has something to do with Nick's status with the team next season.

Lea has his work cut out for him, but he's got options. I think I saw Vandy only has 40 guys. So while he can't transform the team with this recruiting cycle, he still has time and room to go after some kids, and hit the transfer portal. It's easier now than ever with the transfer rules, and also with the additional eligibility due to Covid.

They have 20 guys signed today and it looks like 7 are committed but have not signed yet. He has to hit those 7 first, see what he's got, then get back out there and close it out in February.

Recruit the ever living hell out of TN, GA, NC, VA, OH and FL. He's in a good spot for sure when it comes to location. He'll go up against Northwestern, Stanford, Duke for recruits but so what?
