just watched the end of the navy game.....Tommy Rees was showing some nice stuff there too. it was hard to see if you were like me and watched that game live, and was upset at the state of the game. but going back and watching it, and not 'being caught up' in the game, I was able to see Rees has been consistant the last 2 times he was in the game. at least with his poise, patience in the pocket, etc.; he looks very comfortable when on the field

I'm very interested to see what he'll do against Utah, with a bye-week of practices under his belt; knowing he is gonna be the starting QB coming out of that tunnel into ND stadium.

Hendrix beat out Massa for the #3 QB spot. Doubt he'll play, but the coaches seem to like what they see.

As long as he doesn't touch the field his redshirt stays intact correct?

Massa, Hendrix

Massa, Hendrix

Living in cincy, I got a chance to see both Hendrix and Luke Massa.
Massa's dad and I went to Xavier Univ together and he now is VP of Development @ Xavier U.
Both QBs have a lot of talent. They're not small, both 6-5 220 plus lbs. Athletic and both ran pro style offenses at sophisticated high schools Moeller and St Xavier. Both have really good arm strength. Both were in a passing contest and threw the ball on the run 65-70 yards.
Massa is more mobile then Hendrix. Both pass very well with accuracy.
Kelly won at UC with 4 DIFFERENT QBs in his first, second seasons. They were just plugged into a system and whoever was in there won and moved the offense.
It would not surprise me in the least if Kelly used a 2 QB system next year--maybe this year if a bowl's out of reach--
Massa and Hendrix likely will see a lot of dual action . But that's just my opinion

I'm really not sure what posts you are talking about in the game day thread. I do know that there is an entire thread about the Utah game and whether dink and dunk will work and whether Rees is capable of throwing downfield (consensus is no). I do know that in the game day thread nobody praised his arm strength in the last third of the thread, whereas plenty of people expressed concern about it. Sure he had good zip on some of his throws, but they were all short. He only made long throws a handful of times all game and they universally looked terrible.

There is a general consensus here that he doesn't have the best arm strength, that was the concern on all the recruiting sites and it's something that's been commented on in many articles about the new ND QB situation.

i like how you completely ignore the fact that a true & good football analyst in mike mayock praised rees's arm strength. we can argue all we want about the consensus on here about his arm strength, but a bonafied football guy said he's got a strong arm.

and from what i've seen, i think he's got plenty of arm strength. and to say all his passes were short, again....a joke. but we can agree to disagree. i'm sticking with mike's comments/praise because i'm sure he knows more about football than you, me and this whole forum put together.

Rocket, your point’s are great, but you are hurting my eye with bold print.

Everybody is off talking about Montana; he went to two different highschools while he played football, which wasn’t even four years. He started late.

Anybody ever watch Pike, how he got the ball out to the edge? Or, has anybody ever seen how Kelly handles the quarterback position, in a time of need?

Nobody on this thread has mentioned that there is two weeks till ND’s next game. Look at what has happened on Kelly coached teams in that situation.

Hendrix and Massa the same height? And Massa being more mobile? I think Massa is closer to six and a half feet, and I would be surprised if Hendrix is actually 6’4. No one mentions the type of offense he ran in high school. Check it out. The fact that he has “a cannon” is an unexpected bonus. He got it with his feet in high school. This is the kind of guy that exceeds “star” expectation, you know three, four, or five. Recruited based upon running skills, has a big-time arm to develop, and oh yes, all three freshmen quarterbacks are smart.

Crist has faked two great defensive ends out of their jock straps, so I am not sure of the evaluations I have seen of him.

Granted Rees picked an unsuspecting Tulsa apart; but Utah will be ready, facing TCU this week and all. Rees is not going to get away with throwing underneath on them, especially with a comatose running game.

A further note: QB was stacked in Ohio for the three year period leading up to Massa and Hendrix's senior year. (The first team All State QB their sophomore year was our own Dan McCarthy, I believe!) Maybe not top BCS quarterbacks, but good ones, enough to confuse evaluation of the talent.)

I strongly feel Massa and Montana have major talent, as does Hendrix. Tommy is a gamer; physically he is just not in same category. Let’s see who gets us through this year, and let’s see who develops most and fastest for the next three years! My crystal ball is suffering a power outage!

Very interesting news. I wonder what will happen if Rees goes down, to we go to Montana for sure or would Hendrix get a shot? Is saving the 5th year that vital given all the QBs they are going after for 2012?

I think you have to see a difference between his short throws and long throws. Even on his interception against UM he put some good zip on the ball. Against Tulsa, he was putting good zip on his throws again.

But yeah something like 24 of his 33 completions were 5 yards or less, so he was throwing short a ton. Some of them were across the field throws but what's that like a 20 yard throw? Guys like Crist with strong arms throw 20 yards with the flick of a wrist.

This kind of reminds me of a batter who can hit **** beam line drives, but we're all arguing that Rees can't hit the long home runs. There has to be a difference there.

From what I saw, his longer passes were very erratic and clearly did not have the zip of his shorter throws.

I think that's the general consensus. I myself commented that he showed good "zip" on his short throws, but the few times he tried to throw long were terrible. Now maybe it is a twenty yard throw for an out from the right hash to the left sideline, I don't know - I don't watch football with a calculator and a ruler.

Tommy throws a good ball a short distance, I think the offense works better with him in than it did with Crist, but it's a different kind of offense. Just look at him standing beside Dayne, there is a hugely noticeable different in size and stature, he does not have a cannon at all.

Kelly used to platoon QBs a lot, and a part of me really wonders what will happen if Utah starts to lay a beating on us and Tommy is struggling really badly. If Hendrix is a legitimate thought for next year, and Kelly is confident about QB recruiting next year, one would think that he might get a chance to get some game action. Might as well see what all the kids can do, no?

Am I out to lunch here?

Nope that was my theory behind this thread. I think that, obviously, the season is worthless, and to make a move towards establishing the direction, and future of this team. If Tommy performs well against Utah, let him play, but if he struggles, throw Hendrix in. I think it would really benefit this team to have a clear picture of where it's going to be headed next year. I think a QB competition would hurt the development of the team. And, a chosen, set direction would benefit Kelly, and eliminate questions about his leadership, and the team would rally behind him.

Massa from what I read seems athletic. If he is at the bottom of the depth charts next spring is there a chance he moves to the defensive side of the ball ala Danny Spond?

BK said Thursday after his practice that Hendrix will be used strickly in an emergency situation. He wants to save that 5th year for Hendrix. It's Tommy's team from here on out barring injury and in that case we will see Montana.

.....and it's not dumb to burn a kids redshirt in mop up time over the last three games? He is not in a position to start right now in this offense andBK made that clear after yesterdays practice.

Maybe I'm reading something into this that isn't there, but to me that means he isn't looking to Hendrix for next year. Here's why:

The odds of having a four year starter at QB are next to zero. If he's successful, then he's going to go pro before he's used up his eligibility. Were Hendrix to start soon and be a big success, he isn't going to stay in college and pass up millions of dollars. Look at Andrew Luck, he's got two years of eligibility left - and he's first on a lot of mock draft boards. Think he's going to stay in Stanford for two more years? Do you think that red shirt year benefited the program at all?

Moreover, lets say Hendrix isn't the guy next year, but is the guy at some point in the future. Say Crist is back and wins the job next year, he has two more years. Then Hendrix has two years, then Maulk has two years after sitting on the bench for three? That's not going to help QB recruiting in the slightest.

And what if Hendrix isn't the guy for the future long term. We transition from Dayne to Maulk or Golston or some other recruit. We get him a fifth year he isn't likely to get to use and serves no benefit to the program.

When the team is in full fledged disaster mode trying to build for the future, I don't see how a red shirt for Hendrix helps out long term that much. If he succeeds, he isn't going to use the fifth year. If he doesn't, we don't need him for a fifth year.

Why does it have to be a 4 year starter to matter? Is he less valid if he starts for 3 years? I'd venture that Alabama is glad the McElroy is back for a 5th year? Colt McCoy stayed 5 years in Austin. It's fairly likely that Dayne Crist will be at ND for 5 years.

I want the best QB on the field and that gives us the best chance to win.

Let's all start thinking. No way iare Hendrix and Massa ready to protect themselves with this offense. Remember our best blocking runningback (picking up blitzes and assignment blocking) is out for the season.

(Limited action, mop up action, and to risk another catastrophic injury, right!)

Because if he is the guy next year, and he isn't going to start for four years then this Red Shirt year doesn't really save any eligibility for him. McElroy isn't a pro prospect, and McCoy was a very odd situation.

I'm not saying Hendrix or Massa would do well if they played, just wondering if it means something that Montana will be used as a backup instead of someone who has more potential long term.

Hendrix is not going to play. With three Qbs in this class it makes sense to stagger their eligibility. We may lose one to transfer as well. Montana is a bandaid at this time. I don't even know if he'll get a scholarship next year.

I can see that argument for staggering eligibility, especially if we lose one to a transfer. Just worried about down the road for recruiting the 2012 prospects (where we appear to be strong with Crow, Mauk, Kiel etc) and the such. If we bring in two of them, and Crist is back, we'd be lucky to only lose one to a transfer, it might be significantly more. Worse yet, it could hurt us with bringing in QB prospects next year.

And Montana should not get a scholarship next year, he will be 4th on the depth chart at best.

Have to disagree there. QB's leave early less than any other skill position player. It's a spot where it behooves a guy to stick around and gain PT. Look at the starting QB's in the NFL right now.

15 were 4 year college guys
11 were 5 year college guys

Only 6 came out with eligibility remaining. And Sanchez and Vince Young spent 4 years in College.

Bottom line is that it's pointless to worry about a guy who hasn't taken a college snap, leaving early. We don't even know if the kid can play yet?

TT isn't it uncommon for a team to award a player a scholarship for 1 year and take it away the next year if he doesn't do something extreme?

Where the hell is BGIF, we need him back like yesterday. Damn.

He was a walk-on. We had some free scholarships. He was going to be the backup, and they awarded him one. It's a 1 year contract. BGIF disagreed with me on this, but if we are close on scholarships - I have no doubt that they'll have his wealthy father foot the bill.
