Darren Walls didn't play much against BC, wondering why?

You're new here huh? j/k

I made a thread in the heat of the moment called "Darrin Walls - Take a seat"

Many agreed, some didn't. Basically many of us feel that year off has affected his development and has looked lost when he is out there in coverage. He was continually getting burned and making mistakes. Even when he thought he was doing right, like when he made the interception against Purdue on 4th down, he was actually hurting us because if he just would've knocked the ball down, we would've had better field position.

Not saying I know why he isn't playing, just wouldn't be surprised if it was based on performance. I loved Darrin in 07, showed promise, most people were excited what he was gunna bring to ND. I thought he would be a shut down corner. It just seems he isn't getting it done, and needs more time to learn and catch up on what he missed.

Walls hasn't played much all year.

Perceptions can be quite misleading.

For someone who "hasn't played much all year" Walls was leading all ND CBs in PT throught the Washington game (last PT stats I've seen published). Not only does Walls lead he has a 1/3 more minutes than any other CB.

Walls 99 minutes
Blanton 75
McNeil 49
Gray 32
Slaughter 12

The perception is that while he might have been in the game, he wasn't playing. I'll remove my tongue from my cheek now.

Seems to me Smith blows some coverage too. Am I wrong or was our defensive backfield supposed to be the best we have had in years? They seem to be the weak link.

Yes, #58 was out of position a bunch Saturday. But, I think they played everyone up and dared Shinskie to beat them. He almost did.

I don't think Walls would have considered coming back if we were not going to be offered a 5th year. He would have gone elsewhere it that were the case. Also, I think the Smith that we being referred to was #22, not #58.

I would take Gary Gray over Walls in a heartbeat. Gray has tons less experience, but had a pick, and seems to usually be in the right spot. He will get better, and Walls has only regressed. (my opinion)

With the db commits we have already, and the possible ones still on the horizon, I hope that he is not offered a fifth year. Thanks but no thanks.

Before this season Darrin was being hailed as the second coming of Champ Bailey, now is it possible for him to have regressed to the point where an unproven high school player would be a better choice than him? I highly doubt it, something tells me that we could definitely use him back for his fifth year.

If Gary Gray is better than Walls, I guess I'm not watching the same ND games as some of you. Walls seems to at least look back for the ball and is in step with recievers than being five yards behind like Gray. Walls has more speed than Gray.

Walls has been the biggest disappointment on the defense not named Harrison. That's why he hasn't been playing. Gray has been performing better.

I can see sitting walls and see if he bucks up. The guy is a talent but he has been off this year. I say he comes back and has a big year next year. May see him do well before this year is over-I wouldnt count him out.

While we're posting on this DB thing I will say this, something is missing here, the talent is very very strong but why are guys so wide @#$ open? You will see a change somewhere next year, I dont know if its coach/scheme or philosophy but I guarantee you Charlie knowing what next year could bring will not let this go without being more involved. They have all played poorly-even McCarthy-who we all think is tremendous has been caught a few times this year out of position. Weis will be more involved if he hasnt already. They can play for all of it next year but not with a chinese fire drill secondary.

Well those words came from other people then, not me. While I was glad to have him back, it is obvious that taking a year off has really hindered his progress. I truly wish he and McNeil get to where they should be because I do believe that Gray and Blanton, while having tremendous upside, still need some work.

Walls had a great sophomore year, while Blanton showed signs of briliance. Gray has shown at times this year that he's ready to step up and make plays, but I think that our safeties don't reassure them of help over the top, so they're either playing off too much, or there is a differance in schemes from last year. These kids sure as hell didn't forget how to cover WR's down field.
