Begs the question....wtf is happening in practice? Does Hendrix not work hard enough? Is Crist not pushing hard to get his job back? And Golson...i see him on the sidelines-- he still looks to small to take D1 hits.

Again just food for thought...if Rees is the best we have based on practice...makes me wonder what is going on. I dont hate Rees...I want him to protect the ball...one of the main tasks of a QB.

Dayne Crist: 4-6 (huge wins against Purdue, Western Michigan Pitt and a depleted Fredo team)

Tommy Rees: 6-2 (USC, Utah, Army, Miami, Michigan State and Pitt)

For those of you still whining about Golden Boy still sitting on the sidelines with his frowny-face and clipboard.......

I don't think that's fair to Dayne. Every time Rees goes to the sideline, Dayne is waiting for him and giving him advice. He's a class act on and off the field.

These guys are incredible quick with the citations. Never had one before and got one a few minutes after my offensive post. Impressive.

Denard Robinson disagrees with this statement. ;)

"Rees INTs are why we lost to Tulsa last year without question."

what? Rees wasn't like "let me throw somethin' coach" they should have kicked the FG to win. the kicker was perfect on the year. not Rees's call.

what about the TD drive by Rees to end the first half of the USC game last season? did that almost cost them the game?

this argument is ridiculous. Rees is better and today was not a benching day.

Rees had 3 INTs that game including one when we were in scoring position which Tulsa ran back for a TD. If he throws the ball out of the endzone on the INT in the 4th quarter we win the game. You may disapprove of Kelly's play call there but shouldn't Rees be smart enough to know the only way you lose that game is if you turn the ball over??

You're a good man. There are a lot of teachers on this site. We react quickly and poorly to that word.

To me, this is the most revealing post on this topic. What is going on in practice? Is it that Rees is looking really good in practice? Are the other guys really struggling in practice or have bad attitudes?

Look at Rees's Career #s

165/263, 1879 yards, 18 TDs, 13 INTs

even if you think that's as good as he's gonna get - its not terrible. i think he'll only get better and that's a nice start for a kid who's age starts with the #1.

I don't think W-L record is a fair way to decide between Crist and Rees. A lot of these wins and losses for both qbs were at the mercy of whether or not our defense could stop the opposing team with under 2 minutes left in the game. Sometimes they did and we won. Sometimes they didn't and we lost. Rees and Crist had nothing to do with the way our defense performed in these spots.

Ok, if it is not fair, how do you 'degree' the wins? My arguement.... with no names mind you....

I win more games with the red qb more often than the blue qb...... which one do you think I am going to use and play the most????????? Which one would you use??? And regardless of the stats????

Unfortunately ultimately I see Rees as a Frank Reich (Bills backup)type QB. He can steady a ship but he's never gonna take us to a higher level to put a team away.

Good point. Reich was only 32 when he led the comeback against the Oilers . Tommy is already 20. Seems that your comparison is spot on.

I'd look to see how they play overall in the games they played. Was it awful? was it bad? was it okay? was it good? was it great?

I'd then look to see how they played late in the 4th quarter. How did they do with the game on the line? Did they make a play then? I'm not going to fault them if they put us in a position to win with 2 minutes left and our defense couldn't stop them.

I'd also look at how they managed the game? How they read the defense? How many bad throws they made?

I'd also look at the turnover factor and how they can make something out of nothing on broken plays.

I'd also look at their W-L record but it wouldn't be a major variable of interest. I'd look at specifically who they won against.

Rees is looked at as a hero today by some because we won the game after his great drive down the field in the 4th quarter. Yet, he received very little credit for an amazing drive down the field against Michigan 2 weeks ago because our D let Michigan go 80 yards on us in 23 seconds.

In my opinion, Rees best game as a QB was against Michigan. He was so-so against Mich State...some great throws...some idiotic throws. Today he was pretty brutal. TOs have been a constant theme in every game he plays.

In Tommy's worst game, we won.

I don't think there's a single person of sound mind here who honestly thinks that Tommy is a "hero" as you put it, but he put us in a situation to win at the end of the game. Isn't that one of your criteria for how a quarterback is evaluated??? I believe it was #2 on your list. We won... Celebrate!

I suppose that this thread serves as Primal Scream therapy for most of us, so I'm going to indulge. This game was horrible for me and my 95 year old Mother to watch. [when we were on offense]. Even the last clutch drive did not help. The whole feeling was: we're not improving. I honestly thought that we were in some constant up-tick prior to today. Discouraging.

I'm not advocating going back to Dayne Crist, but it is at least not an irrational thought. Both Urban Meyer and Chris Spielman thought it during the game. Both are knowledgeable people and are not prejudiced. Nevertheless, I don't see Dayne Crist as our answer, though I wouldn't go ballistic if Kelly decided differently.

But, if this really was a regression by Tommy Rees as it seemed, then he is not the answer either. But would throwing the season into the fire with one of the rooks be better?

Is there any explaining what went on today? Maybe. I believe that ex-Tulsa D-coordinator outcoached us. I believe that he saw a pattern in Rees' play prior to the snap [that is his MENTAL pattern], and schemed it brilliantly. Someone smarter than I needs to analyze this, but it seemed to involve a nearly fixed pattern of "sideline check, then re-check due to safety position, then confusion due to last second safety re-positioning, leading to lack of confidence and staring down just one guy". There may have been more to the disguise.

If any of that was true, and both Meyer and Spielman talked about parts of it, the Pitt DC was playing effectively with Rees' mind. Was it then up to Rees or Kelly to clearly see this and devise ways out of it? Whatever, it only finally began to happen in the second half, when we went largely to a "don't change things, just go" mentality.

Anyway I look at it though, it seems someone figured out how to use Tommy's mental patterns against him. Where that leaves us for the rest of the season I don't know.

God bless the Defense.

Great points and good analysis, point is, one cannot take away his wins. Plain and simple. What if... Hendrix or Crist was put in and they throw int or fumble. Now this thread has a new heading.. Fire Kelly and we are posting about Meyer, Jesus, and Skip Holtz coming to coach. I am in no way demeaning your passion for ND football bro but, if Kelly keeps going between QBs, I believe we would be in worse shape than the building stage we are currently in. We have bunches of talent on paper, but as a team we are struggling and putting a tremendous amount of stress and pressure on the Rees.

It seemed to me that Pitt figured out how Tommy would react to pre-snap reads. Maybe I'm wrong. But, I think that's part of his progression.

Yeah, the #119 pass defense in the country will get you every time with that.
