I feel like you wrote a lot of stuff that didn't really relate to Whiskey's post. Maybe that was intentional.

But I thought all Whiskey was saying is that he doesn't like ESPN because its analysts and commentators take ill-considered, indefensible positions purely to maximize the entertainment value of the product, which would be fine except that it screws with ND's fortunes.

He didn't accuse you of liking ESPN only because you work there (he said that your liking ESPN and working there are likely correlated, without giving any opinion on causation), he didn't say anything about master-crafted narratives mandated from on high. He just said the apparent "analysts" on ESPN aren't providing honest analysis, and it ends up tending to be harmful to ND.

You do this a lot, by the way; inject things into others' posts that aren't there.

Meanwhile, I sit here patiently waiting for my two-week-old daughter's social security number so I can get her ESA and 529 started.

Keep it in a taxable account in your name and you will get better financial aid treatment, you can always use it for their benefit or give it to them outright down the road. Too many people over-fund these types of accounts.

Just because I quoted him doesn't me I'm obligated to limit my comments to a direct and exclusive response. Yes, I quoted Whiskey, but I typed a LOT in there and much of it was directed at the general attitude of "we hate ESPN because..."

I'm not going to respond to EVERY post that bashes ESPN, just like I'm not going to respond to EVERY post that says Everett Golson should win the Heisman, Brian Kelly is the best coach in college football, conservatives hate the poor, or Notre Dame should relax its admissions standards. Sometimes I'll just pick one one post that expresses one of those positions and respond to that position generally, based on arguments I've seen multiple posters who share a similar opinion make.

That's not the case anymore. If the student is a dependent, the assets are treated as parent assets (assessed at 5% versus the student rate of 20%). Also, the plan is to save enough where we'll be able to pay cash and hopefully not worry about financial aid.

Custodial Coverdell ESAs owned by a student, where the student is both the account owner and beneficiary, are reported as a parent asset if the child is a dependent student and a student asset if the student is an independent student.

Custodial 529 college savings plans owned by a student, where the student is both the account owner and beneficiary, are reported as a parent asset if the child is a dependent student and a student asset if the student is an independent student.

This treatment is effective with the 2009-10 award year due to a legislative change enacted in the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.

Also: An exception to the penalty can be claimed if you terminate the account because the beneficiary has died or is disabled, or if you withdraw funds not needed for college because the beneficiary has received a scholarship.

Ah, fair enough. I thought that might be what was going on. Might be helpful to throw in a "and this part isn't necessarily directed at So-and-So, but ..." or something like that from time to time. When a poster quotes another poster, it generally seems like he is responding to that poster directly, and your post didn't seem to follow.

Anyway, to your point, as Whiskey pointed out, it is possible to dislike ESPN and think it harms ND without thinking that there is a "master-crafted narrative" "mandated from on high" to downplay ND. It may be subtle bias; it may be not bias but the overriding desire to provide entertainment rather than honest analysis; it may be something else. But it seems to many of us that the end result is that ND loses.

I do not think that ESPN is "evil." Not at all. It's a corporation trying to make a buck like any other. But I do dislike watching ESPN and, like you, watch virtually none of its programming except live sporting events and 30 for 30s.

Well, the guy is my brother, so I am admittedly biased, but... I do think that he earned it. He was a helo pilot, who spent a LOT of time out at sea, doing insanely mundane things when he wasn't flying. When he was flying, it was not always sunshine and calm winds. They often flew long hours, with little sleep, in some nasty weather conditions. He also left one of the helos he was flying at the bottom of the North Arabian Sea, after the drive shaft for the tail rotor snapped, causing the thing to become a multi-million dollar paperweight. None of them(my brother was the Pilot in Command, and had a co-pilot, an ASW operator, and a rescue swimmer on board) were seriously injured, but I'm sure they all had a long conversation with themselves about whether or not they wanted to keep flying.

I hope my post didn't come off as bitter.

In today's show Cowherd picked ND. He spoke very highly of Golson and thinks he's going to be the next Russell Wilson. Basically said ASU has a porous defense and ND will win 36-30.
