He has a lot of experience coaching on the NFL and college level. He was the line coach when the Bears went to the Super Bowl.

Heistand interviewing at Notre Dame - VolNation

they all seem to want him out!!! lol

Offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, in particular, has been under fire. Tennessee was one of the worst running football teams in the country this season, finishing 117th nationally. The Vols were the only team in the SEC this season that averaged fewer than 100 yards rushing per game.

They really hate him on that site. He has a nice resume and Midwest ties though. Also, read he coached 12 All-Big Ten Lineman during his 8 years at ILL.

Is this supposed to be sarcastic?

Sherm, you can call it whatever you want, but after watching the Bears OL continuously underperform, especially in the run game under him, I'm not at all enthused by this hire.

i will just say this.....Tennessee had 0 OL commits this cycle and word from their boards was he was NOT a good recruiter...to further back this up...out of all the commits for UT for the 2012 NONE of them were recruited by HH

Of course they want him out. Tennessee stunk under Dooley and the fans want change. However the guy had a long successful career in college and the NFL. You don't get to the NFL by accident, and its not like he doesn't have a lot of college experience as well.

A lot of the coaches that we had under Willingahm and Weis went on to do well other places and get hired by good programs. I don't see why you would possibly take a fan's word for it that this guy stinks.

Tough Job

"UT has zero returning starters on the offensive line. That's right, zero.

"It's obvious," Hiestand said of the task at hand. "You don't have to have much background to realize it.

"You generally have some experienced players mixed in with some inexperienced players. We have inexperienced players mixed in with more inexperienced players. It is a challenge but that's what we're faced with. It's a challenge but what isn't?"

Even though Hiestand may not say it, he has to be realistic. He isn't going to turn out five All-Americans this season so he's determined to mold what he has through hard work."

Before we go all doomsday on this hire read the article TT put up. He has only been at UT for two years and the first year he had zero return starters.

Once again our board speaks loudly on a platform of essentially no relevant knowledge. I am no more knowledgeable, but I at least will trust those who have proven that they are. As we know all too well, Urban Meyer is putting together a new coaching team. To do that, he interviewed three candidates for his O-Line coach. Unfortunately, one of them was our own fine Ed Warriner, who got the job. The two others were Texas A&Ms O-Line coach and ..... wait for it ..... Coach Hiestand of Tennessee.

Now let's scratch our beards for a moment a contemplate.... hmmmm ..... who knows more football? The Tennessee fan boards? Our own IE board? Or Urban Meyer?? Tough conclusion.

But, hysterically, how could it be?? Tennessee stunk in the running game? Therefore Hiestand must stink --- despite all actual evidence of his past accomplishments against that. MAAAAYBE, a tiny Tennessee voice peeps, the offensive coordinator was to blame. Maybe that coordinator was so pass-happy that he demanded Hiestand emphasize pass-blocking schemes which crippled the run game. No No can't be!.

Well, at least he stinks as a recruiter, so that @#$%^&## Coach Kelly must be out of his mind!! But a small voice from his past athletes says: he was like a father to me, a real family man, a man who left the NFL for Tennessee specifically to be there for his own kids and to get into a family atmosphere which Dooley was preaching.

All BS!! Why's he leaving then??? .... ummm .... Maybe he doesn't like the offensive scheme and the fact that the head coach doesn't seem willing to back him up with his own ideas about blocking schemes.

@#$% *&$%* @%*&#$@!! He!l with that!! I want to gripe about Kelly's intelligence and knowledge of available coaches!!!

I posted this in the "Who's Likely Next?" thread but it belongs here:

Like many of you, I'm also hoping for a higher profile hire, but consider this:

  • There's very little correlation between success in the NFL and success in CFB (e.g. Saban, Carroll, Weis, etc.)
  • UT's rushing attack jumped 35 spots between 2010 and 2011. Heistand probably had a hand in that.
  • Kelly's been doing this for over 20 years. He knows what to look for.

Last year, Tennessee signed 4 OL, 3 of whom were 4 stars, one of whom turned us down. I am not sure how they divide recruiting, but at some point those guys would have to meet HH.

OMM, that's fine that you want to be positive, hell, great even, I'm going by what I witnessed in Chicago, where his OL's were average to well below average at best when it came to running the ball....that may excite you, but I'm far from excited about it.
