I'm kind of neutral about all of this because I don't see ND signing their lives away to the big ten, somewhere in the contract there would have to be some clause for ND to play neutral site games, schedule there own OOC games, keep traditional rivalries, and keep the team televised every week. I am sure the Big Ten would be happy to concede to whatever ND demands. I kind of wish ND was winning these past few years so that they have some leverage in the football department to go along with the business department.

Itll be a interesting few months.

I don't think they will give ND any special concessions, not if they have learned anything from what is happening now. The preferential treatment of Texas and Oklahoma over the other B12 schools caused the simmering resentment that made them susceptible to fragmentation. Just like the little rich kid who didn't learn to share with others, if ND joins a conference they are going to have to learn to play as an equal member.

I still think the only way ND joins the big ten is if it is the 16th team. Even if there are already 16 teams, I believe the Big10 would drop somebody just to get the ND.

I don't see any way that would happen. Once they are 16 ND is out.

So if the Big10 takes 5 more teams: Pitt, Maryland, Rutgers, and two other Big East schools, they wouldn't pull a "recruiting move" and wait till the last possible to accept the last one just to see if ND wants to join?

Once the Big Ten hands out formal invitations to 5 more schools, then I agree, ND is screwed. First, if the Big Ten sends out those 5 invitations, it means that whatever negotiations went on behind closed doors ended with Notre Dame saying "No", and the Big ten saying "Really? This is your last last last last chance or we are moving on". ND is a big part of these discussions, and have a representative on every conference call, meeting, and golf outing. They aren't being stubborn and just sitting in South Bend waiting for the Big Ten to call and going to decide on a coin flip whether to join or not.

My guess is ND is a 55/45 lean towards going at this point. Not definite, but have to strongly consider it. Football is changing, and honestly, no one knows if ND will be able to survive it. They may be able to, or they may not. There's so much uncertainty down the road that all answers are educated opinions. ND has its other sports to consider along with football.

I would not mind ND going to the Big Ten if they could schedule neutral site games 2x. Like Play Ohio State in Florida, or Penn. State in Philadelphia. That will keep there national stature. Also, aslong as they can play USC, Navy yearly. and BC every other year I would not care.

Respect, yes. Agree, no way. Not enough evidence for ND to move one way or the other.

BTW, Lou left ND only to join the Cocks three years later. He left us in winning seasons.

I'm still perturbed about that.

Don't try to pull the Lou card and get people against me little man. I have not insulted Lou to the level you infer.

I still don't believe that leaving was really Lou's choice. The guy had too much love for ND. I still believe that he was forced out, to protect Rockne's win record.

We should have put this in my conspiracy theory thread.

I am surprised that people think if there is a Super conference Big 16 or Pac 16 that that the teams will play only 1-2 non conference games. Even if they split the conferences into divisions that's 8 teams each that would be 7 conference games in the conference division. That is if they played everyone in there division. (The Big 10 does not play every team in their division now.) Actually, I would be more likely to think that if a conference were established with divisions that a couple of interdivisional games would be more likely than playing every team in your division. My point is there would likely be 3-4 non conference games per team. If ND remained independent, (I am not saying they should) there would be plenty of teams that would want to schedule them. (Big Money for them.)

One thing I would like about having 4 super conferences and ND in one of them is that at the end of the year you could have 4 divisional winners, I am sure they would be paired together in Bowl Games. That would leave us 1 game away from a true championship.

I will not be interested unless we go to a TRUE play-off system. This is my personal take. Of course that is unrealistic, but so is a championship uncontested with the likes of Utah, Boise State, or even Tulsa going undefeated.

This won't solve the political repercussions from this last year's football dealings concerning politics. Fortuntely for the BCS, bigger things are looming for politicians, but I can guarantee we haven't heard the last of it. Four conferences of 16 teams won't fix the problem and may only exaccerbate it. If ND gets left out after going 12-0, heads will roll. It just won't happen.

We don't need to hop in bed with the devil or Delaney. Write that down. All of you Big-10-ophiles need to chill, for real.

ND admission standards forced Lou away...in his eyes he couldnt get players to compete like Randy Moss, Peter Boulware, etc, etc. Not breaking knute's win record was only what he said publicly.

If there is a 16-team Big Ten (or any other conference) they will probably have to play 9 conference games each.

What is being lost with this mega-conference idea is that OOC games will be largely irrelevant. If we are to assume that eventually there will be 4 super conferences, then what matters most is winning that conference.

If getting to a conference championship game in the Big Ten or if the system is set up where the division winners go into a playoff, it would be ridiculous if they only played 8 games. The whole concept is kind of ridiculous anyway, but that extra 9th game could be huge.

Anyway, why would teams schedule any tough OOC games? I'm not saying they will disappear entirely, but out of a 16-team Big Ten we'd probably see one or two solid OOC matchups a year. Hooray!

What makes this 16-team conference size so ridiculous is that there will rarely be legitimate division winners. If Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and ND are in the same division, there will be tie-breakers for the division title almost every year. Heck, we could all be 7-2 in the conference. How does a 4-way tie sound?

And what really is going to suck is that most likely the division winner each year will be the team that didn't have to play anyone tough from the other division.

For example, Ohio State goes 8-1 in conference but played Minnesota and Northwestern out of division, whereas Penn State went 7-2 and had to play Iowa and Nebraska.

There will be a mountain of controversey every single year...and this is from just one conference!!

And what about Notre Dame in this situation? Is it really fair if one year OSU gets to play Illinois and Minnesota out of division and schedules Akron, Montana State and Duke out of conference when Notre Dame could play Iowa and Wisconsin with USC, Navy and Boston College out of conference?

What if Notre Dame beat OSU head to head, but Ohio State ended up 11-1 or 10-2, and the Irish end up a game behind them in the conference standings? We would have beaten the team that won our division, beaten more ranked teams, and more better teams.

Think about that....

Notre Dame would kick some @$$ and shake down the thunder if they were to join the big 12. NOTRE DAME, TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA are the most storied programs in college football history and all of a sudden - all those JOPA'S who never wanted us in the BIG 10 would be irrelavent.

Think of the TEXAS market that Notre Dame would have to now harvest through....

Schedule - wise... They'd still get some games that would be walkovers en route to the games against
Texas, Oklahoma and the USC rivalry game

Baylor - The BYE WEEK by the Brazos
Iowa State
Kansas
Texas Tech
along with up and coming
Oklahoma State
Texas A&M
lots of tradition with A&M to replace Army and Navy!!!

It is a long shot but it would be a great move and Notre Dame would be able to keep its mind on its money and its money on its mind

It is an intriguing idea but keep in mind Texas doesn't want to share with anybody, A&M, the guys on the other side of the Red River, nobody. They'd be happier if Oklahoma had gone to the Pac 10 instead of cremepuff Colorado.

Inviting ND into the Big 12 would enhance ND's recruiting prospects in the Texas. "That's right studly WR, at ND you'll be on TV coast to coast but mom and dad can stii be at all your away games without leaving the state. I'll bet they won't miss those big games against North Texas, Sam Houston St, and Stephen F. Austin."

BTW, ND is 8-2 against the Horns including depriving them of a couple of NCs.

Why in %^$# is it so important to have a playoff, they play the season off. Leave a pure thing alone and let college football be amatuer. When one of these great teams gets screwed it only adds to the mystic of the game (Auburn in 2004). If Notre Dame would have went conference you would end up with pro football. If Notre Dame runs the table and doesnt get an invitation to the last game give them a ring for an undefeated season and celebrate their perfection. I love Notre Dame football but more to the point I love the college game , lets not make them semi/pros ala southern cal, ala, etc.

The 2004 Auburn team does not add to the 'mystique' of college football... You don't get a ring for an undefeated season, you get a ring for the national championship. The point of a playoff system is to allow teams to sort out the rankings on the field rather than computers and sports writers determining who plays in the BCS. I don't know of another collegiate sport that does this. I would love a playoff. I don't think I'm alone here.

Nope you're not there Terry "Boo Big-10" Tate. Play-offs would fix a lot of problems with college football. This would include conference bullshit.

As BK put it, he's all for the current system, as should every ND fan. ND gets automatic BCS bid if it finishes in the top 8. Playoff system would seriously diminish our chances of playing for a National Title year in and year out. Just think of the season as the playoffs.

Isn't that what he's supposed to say before he's coached a single game in his tenure? That doesn't mean a damn thing. Show me...

Also, don't tell me how to feel/think as an ND fan.

Many thanks...

Not necessarily. At Cinci, BK was very vocal about his disdain for the current system, hence his 12-0 team being left out the championship game. At Notre Dame, his opportunities are different. BK wants to win championships. Does he have a better chance with a playoff system or the current BCS system coaching at ND? Most will agree that in the current system, Notre Dame has an advantage (whether people think it's fair or not) over many other schools, which is why BK is now all of a sudden in favor of the current system.

That's why I say every ND fan should be in agreement with BK on this. Don't you want to win a championship? It's been over 20 years. The BCS system gives us the best chance for that.

Whatever Mark May. We know who you are. :joke:

Hey man, I'm picking up what you're laying down but I can't help but disagree a little. I really think if I can see the advantage I would agree more, but most other conference teams are really hoping to eliminate the Notre Dame clause to BCS bowls.

Politics wise, it would interesting to see whether or not ND would get a shot at the NC if Alabama and Texas as well as ND were undefeated.

Then this conversation piece would certainly be quite relevant... And the next season you would DEFINITELY see a play-off system, because whoever was left out would change the shape of the college environment.

In fact, it may take an eclipse such as this to make it happen. Let's just hope we get to dance. Dance like nobody's watchin'.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

Phork, I expect it from some, but not from you.

This was posted in another thread without a link.

We stand nothing to benefit from this "super-conference" talk at this point in time. I, of course, cannot vouch for two to ten years down the road, but the numbers of teams seem to have analogously begun to resemble a venereal disease.

Of course we have seen our fair share of nookie, but it's tough to get a disease when you go for high-grade hotties. Factor that with good protection and we are scot-free from any STD's.

The only down-side to this is that we have no pictures of some dude banging a goat. That comes in handy down the road for holding something over the head of a person in power...

Not gonna happen phork. Take down that picture of Delaney smiling above your bed.

Anyone got Lou's e-mail address? I need to send the guy some Ensure coupons...

I don't read a lot of the drivel posted on here, a lot of it is useless. So excuse me for once in 2500 posts of double posting.

ND will be in the Big10 at some point. Did any of you expect what happened over the summer here to happen at the end of last year? Someone breathed a word and all off a sudden college football was collapsing around us in piles.
If it can happen this year, it can happen next year. The Big10 didn't add Nebraska to stop at 12 teams. Yes they have their championship game now, but they are far from done.

I didn't knock you for the double post, I knocked you for prepping us a less than acceptable suitor.

I believe we have declined them enough to generate much hate for us. We would be neutered (no offense domer) in that conference. We would also lose lots of freedoms.

Play-offs and congress will save us from the clutches of conference. This may be the only good thing government does this decade, and it's really none of their business.
