True but it was early and we knew we would have to score again. When you miss it early, it puts the pressure on your offense to forgo a FG for a TD at the end of the game.

But your odds of scoring on the 2 point conversion aren't improved by going for it later. All you do by taking it later is give yourself no other options once you miss it. If you miss it early it sucks and forces you to go TD TD but at least you know. If you go TD(1) FG TD and then miss the 2 point conversion the game is over.

A million thoughts......won't post them all.

I felt everyone dropped the ball (pun intended) last night. Players, coaches, Under Armour, etc.

The team came out like a deer in headlights. I felt they were overwhelmed by the atmosphere.

The end of the 3rd quarter summed it up for me. 23 seconds on the clock and a Clemson player down (so basically a free time out) and ND does not get a play off before the quarter ends....Unacceptable especially being down multiple scores at the time.

By the way, we had awesome seats. Fourth row on the ND side of the field on the goal line (side of the field where of hill where Clemson enters).

Clemson didn't win the game......but we sure the hell lost the game. Disappointing, they were trying to give us this game, we just didn't take it.

Wouldn't you rather be higher if you're in the end zone so you can see what happens on the other side of the field?

I'm so proud of the effort of the boys last night. What a great team effort, we just came up a little short. At the end of the day I still think we make the playoffs if we win out.

Quick question...

Do I have it right that people are arguing that we shouldn't have thrown it for the first two point conversion and we have people arguing we shouldn't have run it for the second one?

BTW...I am ticked we lost last night, but we lost to the number 11 team in their stadium who had two weeks to prepare while we had a starting qb, rb, TE, et al out, and started a redshirt freshman qb in his second start and a converted wr as our rb in his first season there in down pour conditions while fumbling the ball 4 times and dropped a jillion passes while many other went way high...and lost by two while missing a chance to tie with 7 seconds left.

Some people (not me) are arguing that we should have kicked the PAT on the first two-point conversion and then we would have only had to kick another PAT on the second one to go to OT.

How 'bout this . . . . Catch the damn ball.

C'mon, that's crazy talk...

Some were saying we shouldn't have thrown it because of rain....reading thru the thread this morning

My thoughts, don't fall apart like last year... Next week is a must and they have to show up against SC...

I really wanted the FSU pick play for that final 2 pt conversion. Or a roll out where kizer had an option. To run if not open. Thought that call was really bad.

But that is the point, it is for the last quarter when there aren't many other opportunities and choices in between.

And the chart was made in the 70's and many smart football people believe it is a flawed approach. This has already been discussed and an article even linked in this thread.

The call is openly questionable and has been for years.

Also, you tend to be, at times, very condescending to fans often treating them as if they are stupid. To be honest with you, I would take the average Irish fan, most of whom I consider very intelligent, over Dick Vermeil any day!

OMG. The first 2-point call did not cost us the game. Drop it. The O-Line forgetting we had a big game did. A case of the dropsies and repeated fumbles did.

Seriously - that performance by the O-line???? I can't believe more people are not talking about it. They play - we win even with the fumbles & drops. That was deplorable. HH and the boys should be walking back to South Bend.

We were rolling in that fourth quarter, despite how bad we tried to beat ourselves...stick with that on the play that will send it to OT. Running Kizer into their teeth makes no sense.

LOL. OMG. I sad the exact same thing. I would have loved it if Kelly had the balls to pull the trigger on that.

Everyone arguing about going for 2 as if Yoon is Mr. Automatic out there in the rain and wind. It's over. Move on to Navy and then the douchebags from SC. I love this team. Not an ounce of quit. Came out a little flat at beginning of both halves and made a few mistakes. Clemson successful with run blitzes in crappy weather, and we dropped quite a few easy balls. This team will be fine.

I remember thinking the same thing but the wind was blowing pretty strong against us in the 3rd quarter so I figured it would be better to just regroup for the 4th. Maybe that was the coaching staff's thought as well.

The way Clemson was bringing the house early we should have used Charlie's theory and threw the ball every damn play til they stopped coming ! Too bad we probably would have dropped them ! I really believe if we win out we still make the playoff !

Petty simple here. Turnovers... Not the only problem yesterday, but the only one that made us loose the game.

As has been the theme under Heistand, the pass blocking was A+ (I seriously doubt there's a better team at picking up the blitz) but the run blocking was lackluster at best.

What in the holy crap are the coaches thinking??? Ole miss loses by 28 on the road and ND loses by 2 on the road to a higher ranked team, so what do they do? The drop them both the same number of spots

Morning after comment: I'm convinced there's never been greater parity in big time college football. ND can now play with anyone. Doesn't make the loss any less disappointing, in fact, it makes it more painful, because the Irish were and are the better team (talentwise and coaching wise), but I really do think Kelly has turned this program around. Doesn't mean he doesn't screw up -- he's not Rockne, and I bet Rockne screwed up on occasion -- and he needs to assess his own tendencies and failures, but this team and program are turned around. (Doesn't mean we can't get blown out, sometime, somewhere, but I think we've steadied the ship.)

Plain and simple the team that played the cleaner game won. I don't think the better team won but they played cleaner so they beat us plain and simple.

After sleeping on it I am still flaborgasted by the 2 point call. 1st time I don't mind going for two. I would want to know how to play the rest of the game from that point out. But a QB sweep to go for two with a QB that was cramping?(at least I could have sworn I heard a report kizer was cramping) we were killing them throwing the ball. All staffs hav a list of 2 point plays ready for every game. First was a good one. The second an embarrassment to those he represents and to those who pay his salary. For someone who is heralded for being such a great play caller I must say that was a huge bonehead call and he has a lot of work to do to make up for that one.

This is a great take on things. Clemson didn't kill Clemson. ND killed ND.
1st 2-point was a great call and at the RIGHT time. The 2nd call was a head scratcher if for nothing else because the O-line had shown they were out-of-sorts. The only thing that worked all night was throwing it. You line #7 up on one side #20 on the other and take your best match up.

Liked how Kizer hung in there through the game.
Receivers had a horrible game..too many drops of easy passes.
Turnovers = Losses
Did not like the play call for the 2 point conversion.
ND could have quit, but kept fighting....good sign.
Tough loss cuz should've won. Gotta go forward and beat Navy.
Slow start on road dug themselves a hole.
Where was TE? They have disappeared this year.
Poor tackling hurt us.

Morning after comment #2:

I'm really impressed with Kizer's maturity. I don't mean only during the game. After the game -- a gut wrenching loss, ending on his own failure (in the narrow sense), following a bad INT before the last drive, Kizer was not hanging his head and acting like a martyr. He was not just shaking hands with the Clemson QB, but having a civilized discussion. I do not think most sophomores behave like that. It shows unusual maturity, which is to the program and school's good. Maybe it's a small thing, but maybe it's not.

On the bright side is Kelly finally removed Carlisle as kickoff return man.

Down side is Sanders had the costly fumble. But he is a freshman in that monsoon

Can't win with all of the turnovers

BK clearly outcoached Dabo. If Robinson would have caught the call, we won't have won by one. I don't fault BK for anything in that game actually. We had a chance to tie a game we should have lost big time.

Clemson fans are talking about how Dabo played not to lose and a crappy coach. That is actually way more applicable than BK crapping the bed.

Our team played hard.

We are probably right where we should be. The only 1 loss teams in front of us are Alabama and Ole Miss. Ole Miss may have a worse loss, but they have also beaten Top Ten Alabama, whereas we have not beaten a team currently ranked.

I'm happy with #15. We really haven't proven anything yet. We still control our own destiny IMO.
