There are some rumors and rumblings out that Martin is interested in the head coaching job at Kent State.

I hope it isn't true after one year. I really like the guy and he taught our DB's how to friggin tackle. At the same time, he's said in interviews this year he wouldn't leave ND for another HC job until ND was where it needed to be.

I think he's a great guy, loves ND, and obviously knows what he's doing with the DB's, so selfishly I hope he doesn't go to Kent State.

I'm really interested to see what kind of legs this story has. It doesn't seem like this would come up out of the blue if it wasn't a real possibility. There's an old adage that if you can get a D1 head coaching job... you take it. At the same time, you have to think there is definitely some steps we can take to keep him here and make the head coaching job at a bottom tier institution less appealing.

While I'm sure he would like to be a head coach, he left GVS because Notre Dame was his favorite team throughout his life. That doesn't mean he won't ever leave, but I doubt he wants to go after one year. I won't believe it until he's gone.

According to another link on that same site, they're saying Tony Alford is also interested.

Yeah, Bob Stoops is our new HC with Meyer as his OC according to that POS site.

Anyways, one of the mods on Rivals for IrishIllustrated is also a Kent State mod. I'm sure we would have heard about it by now if that were remotely true. I don't see him skipping out after one year. He and Kelly are close.

He's also my favorite position coach on the team. Brings fire to the sideline

Alford in the mix too?

I will pissed beyond belief if Kent ****ing State messes with the mojo of this coaching group. Yes, I know coaching staffs change all the time... and it's not that big of a deal... but I really like Martin and Alford a lot. Do you know how much our assistants make now? It seems like this MAC salary will be somewhere in the $200k to $350k range.

Well that does make me feel a bit better.

The improvement in our defense in all areas has been nothing short of amazing we were awful last year. I know its part of the game with coaches but i was hoping to at least get a couple years out of them .

Why in the world Chuck would leave Notre Dame to coach a perennial loser in the MAC is beyond me.

what's beyond me is the fact that Kent State has fans who write on a fan message board

Caught it on football scoop, which isn't nearly as wishy washy as bleacher report. Football scoop posts legit coaching openings and rumors about those rumblings. Look at the rest of the updates on that page. Many times, what they "hear" or "predict" ends up true.

I'm not saying Martin really wants the job or is even thinking about leaving after year 1, but just wanted to throw it out there

I know Kent State doesn't get any media attention (for obvious reasons), but keep your eye on that head coach opening. Some football people think Chuck Martin is interested and others report that Brian Polian has already interviewed. Should be interesting

I really hope it's Polian. I want to keep Chuck for a long time. I don't remember DBs tackling better than this year.

I would think that out of respect and a matter of loyalty to Kelly that he wouldn't jump ship after a year especially with the way our program is heading.

I would really hope not. I hope his next move up is to DC after Diaco takes a head coaching job, and then to head coach after Kelly retires with a few national championship rings....Also I would like a unicorn

This, right here. Martin should definitely be in line for the defensive coordinator job. Obviously it depends on a bunch of other factors, but I would love to dangle a carrot or something to make sure he stays with us. I love our defensive staff.

I think Chuck will stick around as he sees a victory on the BIGGEST stage of all in the future. Jobs like HC at Kent State will always be around.

In case the whole "Coach-in-waiting" phenomenon wasn't enough were going to start the "coordinator-in-waiting" trend? Sheesh

Not only did Lou go there, KSU produced a pretty good coach out in the Pacific Northwest name James. BGSU had Don Nehlan. Toledo had Gary Pinknel, etc. Miami had Bo Shembeckler and Ara. The list goes on. It seems to me the MAC is the "Cradle of Coaches"; suicide is a coach going there that flat out cannot coach in college. Gary Faust was a ZIP, the list goes on . . .
