Looks like Freeman has a plan, and majoring in HS recruiting is it. These two hires could really open doors in Fla and Ga recruiting. They push hard in those two states mixed with the national brand....they could absolutely win 3 Natty's in 10 years. I'd take Fla and Ga over Blanchard and Texas any day of the week, but especially on Saturdays.

I’ll attempt at bubble bursting….

- Why would we fly someone in at this time on a Saturday night/Sunday?

- Is there a return flight scheduled or flight from prior days?

- It could be someone below Malchow, not him if we are speculating

- GM hire is not supposed to be imminent, unless that was a choreographed smoke screen

Hypothetically why would he even come to South Bend if he wasn't serious about leaving? Unless he's taking a one million dollar plane ride

If ND is chasing the Oregon guy-this would be interesting. Lanning and Freeman are seen as the young up and comer coaches and as mentioned, Oregon won't have an issue bidding.

Any major school / program can drum up the cash. That said, if Freeman really wants him, go get it.

It seems like the GM space is evolving pretty fast and the money is probably better than it ever has been. Malchow's been at Oregon for three years and with Lanning from his previous stop. Like Bowden, he might see a chance to cash in while also broadening his network.
Or it's just some complete rando flying from Eugene Oregon to South Bend on a midwinter's Saturday night.

I think part of maybe why Malchow comes here I think Freeman is at ND longer than Lanning is at Oregon

I know Oregon pays a lot of money. But they identify talent well. I guess. Lots of "5 stars" but nothing to show for it. Our 3's and 4's have had more success.

Marshall Malchow is a name of note, among the names I’ve heard. However, I have no information I can share regarding that flight.

More:

- He’s someone numerous Notre Dame players, and their families, have previously had contact with.

- His salary is quite modest for a football factory like Oregon.

- He’s known to possess a tireless worth ethic, excellent communication skills, an ability to close the deal, and places particular emphasis on attention to detail.

- He’s not as charismatic as someone like Blanchard, but he relates well with anyone he speaks with.

- Considered among the top tier for the ever changing GM position.

- He’s looking to oversee a more expansive department, with a focus on running operations as close to a professional organization as can be expected from a university like Notre Dame.

- He expects some control, but not autonomy.

- He expects an upper end budget for NIL.

- He’s aggressive with the portal, and gets results.

- He has experience, and connections in all of Notre Dame’s primary recruiting, and favored portal regions.

- He has the proper pedigree, and personality, to thrive at a university like Notre Dame.

- He’s in his mid 30s, and is married with fairly young children. While his wife enjoys living near Eugene, apparently she’s willing to uproot for right opportunity.
Interesting are we gonna lose out on this one because of the lack of NIL to give money to high school kids or are we finally gonna start paying some of these recruits coming in? It’s easy to close deals when you have a bag of cash to dangle in front of recruits faces.

Merck posts the information, and your first thought is how we are going to lose out on this one??

Exactly as far as we have been told we aren’t ponying up the money to HS recruits, are we gonna commit money to that area or are we still gonna get outbeat from Michigan and Ohio State in that area?

I still don't think we're going to get any dude out of high school that's only about the money. If they're like that in high school then my opinion is the odds of them working out at Notre Dame are very minimal
Of course we're not, because we're not looking for that person. However, as many have already mentioned previously, we've missed out on a few folks who were chasing the bag but also would have been culture fits. There's a happy medium between all money and all team and we need to do a better job of closing on those athletes.

No reason we can’t offer 5-7 fits money it was brought up that there were guys asking for money in the 2025 class that we woulda landed and that were fits but ended up not coming. Thats extremely disappointing if you ask me.

Am I wrong to think Malchow is a better fit at ND than Blanchard? He seems like much more of a Freeman personality than Blanchard who kind of came out of that whole thing looking like a primadonna.

Nor do we want those types. Getting paid is one but the recruits chasing the big bags aren't going to be fits. There will always be someone who will pay more and they are constant flight risks a week before ESD and as soon as the portal opens
Are you trying to tell me that Bear Alexander wouldn’t have been a good fit here? 🤣🤣🤣

Based on what I've been reading and hearing for the past year, I think ND could be the highest bidder for certain high school players. It's just that Derek Meadows and Deuce Knight weren't worth it to them. For a generational talent that is also a fit, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a whale offer.

From what I remember we were willing to drop a decent bag for deuce, meadows and a few others but guys like tanook Hines we weren't willing to drop huge bags on. Then Meadows was trying to start a bidding war asking for like 1.5 and nd said no thanks which was the right move.

FWIW, Mike Frank said there were a lot of players in the 23-25 classes who went elsewhere because they got a big bag, that would’ve been completely fine at ND had they been given a bag. He said they wouldn’t be locker room cancers or anything.
