Was there bad blood between Richt and Diaz? I would think Diaz would be a natural fit to take over the Canes. It feels like Richt knew this all along and stuck it to Diaz by waiting until he landed another job and for the season to end. Maybe it’s just the conspiracy theorist in me. Either way, screw the Canes.

Wvu losing tons of talent and holgorsen still has ties in Texas. He was rumored for Texas tech job as well. Houston still a below lateral move in my opinion.

I had this same thought when the notification came up. This situation seems really odd to me. By all accounts, Richt is a good guy. I doubt that he would purposely screw a guy over. But I find it incredibly odd that he would make a decision like this is one day. He had to either 1) been thinking about it for awhile, so he literally d***s his coordinator. 2) Been forced out by administration without any warning (possibly a violation I guess?) or 3) came to the conclusion that he probably knew that he was going to leave, Miami probably put it through the grapevine that Diaz wasn't the guy for the job yet, prompting Diaz to leave and take a job at a lower tier school, albeit with a promotion, which to me at least, was a head scratcher to begin with.

Theoretically Miami could buy out Diaz’s contract and sign him if they wanted to correct?

Sure, but there are plenty of other proven head coaches out there like Butch Jones, Mark Stoops, Mario Cristobal, Greg Schiano who all are also connected to Miami.

Cristobal might be a great choice for Miami. Dude can recruit and the ceiling at Miami is a lot higher than at Oregon.

I don't know. I'd stay in Oregon for sure. Way more investment in their program than Miami will provide. Plenty of talent out West, maybe not as much as Miami has in their backyard.

Houston is a great launching pad. Reasonable competition. Excellent recruiting hub. Alumni is thirsty.

Holgorsen doesn’t need a launch pad though. I also think UH wants to move past that reputation.

Which is exactly why they are going after him. He’s already at P5 school so he wouldn’t leave in two years like every other successful coach has. They’re gonna offer him max money, max control and pull the come home and become a legend by making Houston a football school.

I’d stay too but it’s also not my Alma mater which has been crap for three decades that’s in desperate need of help.

Houston in state recruiting hub definitely better than Wvu in state hub. To go outside state dealing w Ohio st, psu, pitt, nd etc. Wvu really tries for southern talent, but southern talent is taken, so they get bigger schools scraps. I think Dana sees what he's working w next yr and is out!

And Houston is dying to be a member of the Big 12. If they are willing to shell out the cash....

Wouldn't Houston be a big downgrade from WVU for Holmsgren?

I would think so, not sure why he would wanna go there

Edit: Apparently he still has a house there and is good friends with Houstons most prominent booster.

Holgorsen is close friends with billionaire booster and U of Houston Board of Trustee Chairman Tilman Fertitta. Fertitta is dead set on upgrading Houston's football program and getting the Cougars into the Big 12. He recently paid for most of Houston's gut and rebuild of their basketball arena, he was one of the lead investors on the football stadium remodel and word is he'll foot at least a part of his friend's salary as HC.

Now you may think it's a lateral move or even a step down when comparing the WVU job vs Houston's but living in Houston's River Oaks Country Club with his buddy Tilman while getting an additional $1.3 - $2 million per beats living in America's third world everyday of the week. This is movin' on up like George and Weezy.

Kinda sucks for my High School's head coach...resigned to take the LB's coach job at Temple. Wonder if Diaz brings him down to Miami.

The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away...

Hate to see Richt go out like that.

Wonder what the real story is. He's not a guy that would try to screw a U or an assistant coach.

How in the world does this work? Does Miami have to officially buy him out?

a good agent, is going to negotiate an out clause for any type of promotion (in position, or even conference). at minimum, it could be a reduced buyout.

And I’d be willing to bet that Jimmy Sexton is his agent. Nobody is better than him in the college game.

Miami's buyout from Temple for Diaz is $4 million. Coaches usually sign "memorandums of understanding" which is a formal record of the understanding between the coach and the school as to the key terms and conditions under which the university would employ the coach. The formal contract gets done later. Diaz and/or Temple may have owed Miami some money as buyout for becoming Temple's HC. If so, subtract that from the $4 million.

Diaz’s 18 days at Temple coincided with him continuing to coach Miami’s defense as their coordinator, at least in some capacity, through the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27. He was solely Temple’s head coach for about three days.

Should Richt have informed Miami sooner of his retirement, they could have saved a boatload and made the transition easy with a simple promotion. Diaz may retain many of the current staff, saving Miami some money that would be owed should another HC be hired. Since Richt retired, Miami does not owe him anything for the remainder of his contract.

The two other finalists for the Miami HC job were Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko and Michigan DC Don Brown. Does Temple pursue either of them?

Mario Cristobal's buyout with Oregon is $10 mill, dropping to $6 after the 2020 season, and to $4 mill after 2021.
