This morning, I read this article through espn.com about a baseball team in Kentucky that is already planning a “Manti Te’o Girlfriend Bobblehead Day” this Spring. Florence Freedom ballclub to have Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Day - ESPN

The article notes, “As part of the promotion in late May, the first 1,000 fans will get an empty bobblehead box, there will be a pretend kiss cam for fans to kiss their imaginary friends and there will be an imaginary food fight in the kids' area, as well as an air guitar contest.”

As a Notre Dame family, we need to stick up for one of our own…in good times and bad. Please take a minute and join me in contacting the President and Founder of the Florence Freedom and encouraging them to re-think this ridiculous promotion.

I live about 15 minutes away from the Florence Freedom. They are an independent "Professional" team meaning that they are lower than rookie league. Basically, they are a glorified softball team. Kicking a young man while he's down shows no professionalism and zero class. It isn't clever marketing. It is an act of desperation.

The best thing that could happen is that their usual 1,500 empty seats are still empty on this night.

This isn't anything new. Busch League teams are always using pop culture to bring people into the stadium. If there is a spike in attendance, Manti should be flattered if anything.

I agree, this is a totally classless event. It is giving them publicity though, and that is all they want. They aren't doing until May, by then people will have forgotten about the whole ordeal, we're Americans we tend to do that. I almost hate to call or e-mail as to give the time of day. We had a frontier league in our city that didn't last, you might as well watch high school games.

They are obviously desperate to get publicity. it will only work as a marketing ploy if the fact they are doing it causes people to talk about it. making it a big deal plays into their hands, its not even a good idea, who really wants to go to their crappy game to get an empty box to giggle at?

It's been stated...they are doing it for publicity. Leave it alone and they will immediately return to obscurity. Any attention you give is helping them out, and giving them exactly what they crave.

Exactly. People who are up in arms about stuff like this always fall right into the trap and feed it.

Why can't they all be like this?

1. Awful Night (Altoona Curve and Salem Red Sox)
The best and worst promotion in Minor League Baseball (it IS called awful night) begins with the giveaway of “awful” promotional items like a noisemaker, air guitar, free compliment from an employee or bottomless cups. The terribleness continues with music from David Hasselhoff and William Shatner, video clips from Ben Affleck movies, a non-celebrity autograph session and in-game contests like helium balloon toss, a dry water slide, staring contest with the mascot and musical chairs with an abundance of chairs. To cap off the grand celebration, fans are treated to a fireworks display. On the video board. (Imagine the fans if the team loses on top of all this)

"staring contest with the mascot and musical chairs with an abundance of chairs."

So great.
