Still scratching my head over this one.

Thought for sure Ash would make adjustments in the first half. Trust your players to keep the QB contained.

We can point to a lot of contributors but I’m convinced Denbrock is the primary culprit last night. Walton was MIA and the play calling was way too predictable as it seems to be all the time. BYU knew the fade was going to be called and were ready, yet……

CJ made some monster plays last night. Moved us down the field at the end of the half and end of the game with a chance to win.
The fumble spike was bizarre.

The zero blitz on their last TD was head scratching. Hold them on that play and make them kick a field goal to tie. Reminded me of the delayed safety blitz by St Al vs OSU.

Going 3 and out after losing 4 yards on the first play with 5 to go was brutal. We were letting that LB crash unblocked and it happened multiple times.

Walton should have been in that drive. NJJ played awesome but we needed the change up.

Leonard Moore caught some heat in the 4th on a cover 2 that was clearly Shulers fault.

There’s a lot more but I’m not as nuts about it as some. No way those refs were calling the clear PI in the end zone against Greathouse. They were grabbing all night.

It’s pretty clear freeman thought ND could just show up and roll them. BYU did exactly what everyone thought they would do and ND wasn’t prepared

Carr was not good, not just for him; but in general. Terrible reads and late throws all night.

Hardly playing Walton is bad
No wr rotation is bad
Lbs are bad
Moore was bad
Ash scheme was bad
Effort was bad
Shuler was bad
Denbrock play calling bad
Cj checks bad

I thought until the end the oline played pretty well
Nolan played well
Sanders gray talich played well
Dline scheme was to contain and stop run; they did that pretty well but because of that they didn’t get pressure allowing easy throws, the dline scheme and coverage was not synced up well

The entire program got humbled last night. Can they make massive changes during bye and go on the run we know they should or do they stay stubborn and “be who we are” and lose to Miami?

As I’ve said before, 10-2 is unacceptable and if a second regular season loss happens, you need to prepare for next year and Pete needs to hire someone outside of freeman’s tree of trust as an advisor to assess what changes need to be made to the program coaching wise.

Thank goodness we have a bye next week because I don’t want to watch this team play football right now.

I just cannot forgive Denbrock for last night. Just brutal. CJ was also very poor, but I am not sure why Denbrock only allows him to throw outside the hashes for most of the game. Give CJ the ability to use the whole field. He’s not a freshman.

The drumbeat to keep ND out is going to explode this week as Herbie gets his talking points from the ESPN execs and the CFP committee. You did this to yourselves boys. Let’s see what everyone is made of. Traore owes his teammates a world class rest of the season. No way BYU has an answer for his rushes for that entire game. Doubt has arrived.

Gilbert/Greathouse arent bad, but they arent good enough to be getting every single snap. Neither can get separation with any consistency. It feels like the offense is too complicated for them to trust any of the other options, maybe because of all the pre snap stuff that Carr does. And that's an issue. Giving guys who struggle to separate to begin with, practically zero snaps off, isn't going to help the issue.

Aaron Henry is getting a pass in this thread for what has been a regression in DB play this year. Ash’s scheme is part of that, but not one DB that returned looks better than last year

Random Game thoughts not in order:

  • Greathouse had a great game considering what we have seen from him give his targets this season. 8 catches for 125 yards, a couple drops he should have caught give another opportunity but one was a low throw that would have been a catch if he was lead with the ball.
  • Talich had a great game and is the heart and fire of this defense IMO. He plays with something to prove every time he is on the field. I wish we could see that from others on both sides of the ball.
  • Craigs snaps were shit all night long. Not sure if he was more worried about picking up a blitz or trying to adjust to the calls that were being made by Carr.
  • I understand that Carr has free will (or that is what is being advertised) to adjust/change plays but how many times are you going to check into a TE motion run up the gut? Where are the slants or attacking behind the LBs? We get it done to us so why can’t we do it to others?
  • I didn’t get a great feeling hearing MFMF talk all week about being there before and all that good talk. If we have been there before then we learned nothing. We came out flat again and underestimated the affect the crowd would have on the game and players. What happened to coming out hair on fire with something to prove. Zero energy and it just looked more like a business trip where if we show up then we win.
  • Offense: Very bland and there is nothing creative about what we are putting on the field. No four WR sets, No five WR sets, no two back sets. Nothing creative when it comes to attacking the defense’s weakness. We attack the sidelines with the same routes all season. Why don’t we run four wide and make the defense put less defenders in the box then run the ball with NJJ or Walton? Instead it’s the same TE motion to a loaded box for a -4 loss to 2 yard gain. I could keep going but I’ll stop there.
  • Williams I love what you did as a freshman for this team but I am not seeing any resemblance of that player this season. Head down as soon as the ball is in his stomach for a 1 yard gain is not what we need from our RBs.
  • Denbrock will cost MFMF his job unless he retires at the end of the season. Its 2026 and that is the best you can do with the players we have? I know there are younger coordinators out there doing more with less. Scheme against a defense for once instead of what you are doing now. I hope this is your last season because you aren’t worth the money.
EDIT: I forgot to mention how shit the playcalling was after the huge INT to seal the game in the 4th. Another reason to FIRE DENBROCK!

I can’t stomach the thought of another head coach. Freeman is still a strong coach for us. We’ll see what transpires the next few weeks. I would push Denbrock out first. It sure does hurt giving games away, though
I don't want to fire Freeman, I just want him to actually be the dude he presents himself as: relentless, hyper competitive, fiery, etc. Where the fuck is that guy? If he is really that guy, he's going to be taking a long hard look at his two top assistant coaches.

MF isn't on the hot seat. LOL

BUT

He needs to put on his big boy pants and get rid of Denbrock and possibly Ash.

And when you do, money better be no object for finding replacements and don't just settle for guys you are familiar with.

Taking a deep breath, the season isn't over unless we lose to Miami. And, if we can beat them and make it in who knows.... it's pretty wide open. I am no longer convinced that we can win it all, but I don't have a team that I can think of that I would make the obvious favorite.

Either way, MF's decisions on the coaches and in the portal are going to determine if he ascends or just plateaus at a slightly higher level than BK did.

I'm still overly just terrified of what an actual offense will do to us if they scored 28 points on us when all I heard all week was there was no way they'll be able to score.

The refs cost us an opportunity to win the game, but they weren't the reason we lost.

Traore went full retard
No pass rush
Our TEs might be good blockers but are slow AF and not good receivers
Carr missing wide open TDs
Carr fumbling a fucking spike costing us a FG
Ash not having the defense prepared in the first half
Defense making 47 look like Tim Tebow
Run game was abandoned after looking good the first few drives
Denbrock

Just a litany of fuckups.

The games weren't exactly the same, and the opponents certainly weren't comparable, but I kind of feel right now like I did after USF 2011.

Soo, so many self-inflicted wounds, bad coaching, guys just not competing like we know they can.

Miami 2017 was just ND getting hit by a tidal wave, like the Bama/Clemson losses.

Last night was frustrating, like the USF game.

I think frustrating best describes it for me.

It is annoying that it feels like that side only comes out after a loss. Like losing pisses him off so then he coaches with that edge. He needs to figure out how to access that anger without losing or else this will keep happening

Hilariously we are actually are still power rated #1 on Dok Entropy and TeamRankings.com, and #2 in FPI due to all the chaos.

I keep reminding myself that this isn’t the BCS era, this loss could end up benefitting this team if it wakes some people up. But damnit it sucks to keep giving away games like that.

I swear to this day that that USF game killed my dad. Went to the game, drove home to NJ, then collapsed. Now, he lasted another 12 years, but never fully recovered from the condition that game precipitated.

Isn't it great to be a diehard Irish fan!?!
