So I rewatched the game this morning, and then went and rewatched Florida State. Here are my thoughts:
-Our corners (Riggs/Luke) are good. Both are clearly hurt right now. Luke has a hammy or some sort of leg injury, Rigs has his foot.
-Our linebackers are so much worse its mind boggling. Joe Schmidt not only always* got to the right place at the right time, but you can actually see him organizing shit. More blitzes got home and were time right, and Jaylon seems to be playing much faster. In the two games without Schmidt Jaylon has been crazy levels of ineffective. The SAM linebacker is completely irrelevant it seems... never makes a play. Against Northwestern, Morgan was not only late a bunch but in the wrong spots or otherwise making huge blunders. Greer Martini... none of those mistakes. Sometimes a bit slow, but he's much further ahead mentally.
-Safety play is hilariously bad. It's bad against FSU, it's even worse against Northwestern. I don't care how bad/slow/late Redfield is, he's not blowing plays like Tranquil. And Shumate always seems to be fucking up something himself. Where is the help coming from at this position? There is no talent/youth on the roster that can be counted on or groomed or given a shot. Just pure terribleness across the board. No playmakers or reliable players either.
-The DL/pass rush... look, Day is hurt (and out now?) and Jones is hurt. Neither one of them has played since Navy how they were playing pre-Navy. Pre-Navy, they were manhandling people, post-Navy Jones is getting blown off the ball sometimes. He clearly has a lower leg injury. The DEs are terrible at everything but run defending. They exhibit no pass rushing moves or explosion. It's basically Trumbetti and Rochelle and they don't get it done. Okwara, Blankenship, and others who rotate in likewise don't get it done. Of all the problems, the biggest one is that our pressure in early games (Stanford, Michigan, etc.) masked our issues at safety because when they got home it created negative plays or at minimum forced the QB to get the ball out early enough that the DBs didn't have to cover for an extended period of time.
-In summary, giving up 40 points to Northwestern is the worst defensive performance in the Kelly era and I don't think it's really close. And it doesn't look to get any better, because that side of the ball appears to be bereft of talent. And the positional coaching has to be questioned as well.
