BREAKING NEWS: UNC official would not confirm or deny whether Butch Davis has been fired today.

I'm not sure why a Carolina site would tweeting "breaking news" of really no news out of no where, but I felt inclined to share based on the adage "where there's smoke, there's fire". Should find out more soon.

Well if you're not willing to say he's not fired...

I'm not surprised at this if it is true. Seems like that's all we hear out of UNC these days is trouble.

Taking a quick look at the prospects that are considering UNC, I'm not sure who is high on ND but:

Keith Marshall
Sheldon Day
Korren Kirven
Carlos Watkins
Greg Garmon (if we offer)
Jordan Diggs
Armani Reeves
Todd Gurley as well

TE Justin Meredith is another prospect to consider in this mess. Staff thought very highly of him before he committed to UNC.

UNC Official Release:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp announced this evening that Butch Davis has been dismissed as head coach of the Carolina football program. Davis was informed by Thorp and Director of Athletics **** Baddour of the decision.

“To restore confidence in the University of North Carolina and our football program, it’s time to make a change,” said Thorp. “What started as a purely athletic issue has begun to chip away at this University’s reputation. I have been deliberate in my approach to understanding this situation fully, and I haveworked to be fair to everyone involved. However, I have lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution. Our academic integrity is paramount and we must work diligently to protect it. The only way to move forward and put this behind us is to make a change.”

Thorp said the decision was not related to any change in the NCAA investigation, but that it was the result of the cumulative damage to the University’s reputation over the past year.

“Athletics and football are an important part of this University, and a successful football program is essential to the overall health of our athletic program,” Thorp continued. “That’s why we have to put this behind us and move forward.”

Baddour said, “The last 13 months have been some of the most difficult that anyone associated with the athletic department and football program have dealt with. At this time, a decision has been made to change the leadership of the football program to help the entire University community move forward.

“I want to thank Butch Davis and his family for their four-plus years of service and dedication to the University and the Chapel Hill community,” continued Baddour. “My staff and I will work with Chancellor Thorp to transition to an interim head coach as soon as possible. It is critical that we do all we can to help our students and other staff members on the football team since preseason training camp begins in just eight days.”

Crazy part is that UNC took him to their media day just 2 days ago. Curious.

So I'm assuming this is good for ND's recruiting unless UNC hires a very good coach. Are they going to hire a new coach now or have an interim coach on the current staff till a new coach is hired after the season?

Sounds like it will come from within. Look for Sam Pittman to be named HC for now, whether it be full-time or interim. He was named associate HC at Friday's press conference.

Man was one heck of a recruiter. So hopefully this eliminates UNC as competition for some of the target athletes we are after. This can only help ND. How much is up to the coaches and the targeted players. But is sure cant hurt.

Any head coach with an assistant who was WIDELY known in the coaching profession for showing up in recruits living rooms "with a Bible in one hand and a sack of money in the other" [exact quote to me from a veteran Virginia Tech coach] should be buried from the profession long ago. How anyone could give Davis any slack on this is inconceivable...I've been waiting for this for months. I've thought that the total story on this was going to be the "10" some writer said was going to break in August.
