The better way to think of it, is not that Florida stole JT...but that JT jilted us.

whats the difference between that kid leaving Iowa, and JT. theres nothing different. if we got that kid to commit to us, right now he'll be screwing Iowa with no time to look for another LB.

I don't despise Florida any more than before for "signing" Trattou. The situation sucks, but its fair game. Same goes for the reverse, in my opinion.

i feel the same way, its fair game till signing day.

Did Charlie Weis turn him away?

All of it was the numbers game, there were like 6 or 7 guys offered that could've played LB, but most of the big names went elsewhere and with the possible move to the 3-4, ND will need to add alot of depth at this position. The Irish will need atleast four linebackers this recruiting class, so thus the move towards Smith.

Well I think the big difference is that this kid had ND as his favorite, but the Irish did not offer. I'm sure Iowa knew about it and hoped the Irish would land the bigger fish. If Iowa gets screwed it's because Ferentz didn't have a contingency plan in case the Irish made a run at Smith.

JT on the other hand made no indication that he had been thinking about Florida. I think the Jersey connection is what persuaded him, but I would rather lose him now then have him do an Olsen, and not have a chance at getting a replacement.

You jest (I hope)...

You jest (I hope)...

Brian Smith ("Smitty") has been an off and on again
fixture on recruiting sites for many years. He was
partnered with Mike Frank with the original "Irish-
Eyes" before Mike Frank went with the Scout.com
syndication.

Brian Smith's articles usually bring you up-close and
personal with recruits while still keeping objective
as far as team needs.

He is a good writer - worth the read...Tom

Isn't it funny how in the Trattou thread we all kill him for changing schools and here we say how we hope Smith will leave Iowa? Signing day is the final day we should not be allowed to berade these kids until after that. Trattou is not Ronald Talley.

Don't you know that all people who are going to my school are awesome players and everyone who's not is scum, especially if they said they were going to but changed their minds? How long have you been a fan? That's how things work.

Man, I'm quitting Scout. I've had both Rivals and Scout memberships and Rivals blows Scout out of the water. They don't even have anything on Smith, and all of their recruiting news shows up on the site about a day after I already heard about it.

Tis true. They didn't even write an article about JT visiting UF. I would think that would be the main story. The only article I saw was after JT announced for UF. Scout is usually a day behind for some reason.

That is an incredibly stupid descision on Iowa's part. Just because the guy is visiting is no sure thing that he commits. Last I heard, Iowa was not an every-year powerhouse, and it is just plain idiodic to make such pridefuly moves as if they had a recruiting class this year like UF, USC, or Tenn.

Oh, well. Their loss could well be our gain.

good I hope they do pull the offer and he comes to nd.

If this is true, then I see no reason at all why Smith wouldn't be Irish. This would just make Smith's decision that much more easier if Iowa pulled it.

That seems odd... Ferentz is not exactly a dick about these things. He's quite a standup guy actually. ALTHOUGH he could have told Smith stay or go, nothing in between.

I would not have a problem with him doing that.

Wow...that is awesome news but talk about a chicken shit approach to recruiting by Ferentz. Pulls the scholarship offer because a kid has the audacity to look at a program which was his childhood favorite...Screw him...

Oh well, let's hope that this leads to some good news in the coming week.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Iowa pulled his scholly because they wanted to let him out of his verbal. Maybe he didn't want to back out of a verbal commitment so they pulled his offer to let him go to where he really wanted.

I'm not sure on the details, but Ferents is know as a pretty straight shooter. Some say that Smith has been a little wishwashy with him thoughout the process. I think it takes some balls to do that. If more coaches did that maybe there would be less ship jumping so late in the game.

Whatever the circumstance I'm cool w/it as long as it works in our favor. We need LB's!

Iowa was not even on his initial list. You can't fault the kid for wanting to go to his dream school.

If Iowa pulled his schollie, then it makes it impossible for ND to be the "bad guy" in recruiting. Nobody can say that ND "stole" a recruit from Iowa because Iowa pulled the schollie. Thanks for all your help Kirk.

So Iowa was going to pull his scholarship even if Notre Dame had never been interested? Thats good to know.

Its pretty simple:
1. Smith says he wants to go to ND
2. Kirk pulls the offer and gives it to someone else.
