Anybody remember this kid? He's a linebacker who's dream school was ND but we never offered him. He later committed to Iowa. Now I heard CB offered him a scholly. It might be too late, but I hope not. He's from Kansas and was recently updated to a 4 star by rivals. I hope that we can get him. It will be nice to get an athletic inside backer.

I think it was more Minter's call than anything.

I believe you are correct. From what I understand from the boards that I have read, that Minter put his eggs in the basket of a few. Which is why players like Andrew Dailey and Chris Colasanti didn't get offers. But they were good enough for Linebacker U, Penn STate

Also, from what I have read, is that Dailey would have committed to ND. And I am pretty sure that Chris was high on the Irish as well. Both are 4* linebackers.

I went to Brian's high school (graduated in '01) - word out there is that he is about as good as another kid we had go to Nebraska (who still plays for them, is second on the depth chart at WLB)... sounds like a pretty good kid all-around and he was VERY interested in ND last summer... not sure where that interest is now though

The good thing is that he has already been on campus numerous times during the camps at ND. So in that sense, he wouldn't have to visit ND in order to commit. Sometimes I get frustrated with CW's philosophy with telling these top notch kids that "you're the only one we are going after blah blah blah. Yes, sometimes it works but when it doesn't we are left with very few options, ala right now. ND should have at least taken Dailey. He is gonna be a player.

Over on the "Worldwide Leader" Smith is listed as one of the top LBs and he is #150 overall. I always wondered why he was never offered because it seemed that he would jump on the offer like Tate did. I hope it isn't too late to get him, but if it is explained that it was Minter's doing, then he might reconsider, but it is very late. I think Weis' philosophy of going after a few is working, remember, he focuses his recruiting on the offense, not the defense, and the offense is getting tons of talent right now. With Weis promising to get only a few player, he builds up trust with the recruits, unlike some people (Urban) who pulls scholarships because they decided on someone else.

DT Josh Brent was another that was begging to go to ND and got no love and would've committed. I still don't get why he was never offered, maybe I'm forgetting but I don't remember grades being a problem with him but with major need of DT's and that he's clearly better than any that ND has gotten recently. He also another 4* prospect.

According to B&G (which is the best source out there IMO) he did get an offer finally.

Chris Colasanti is really talented. Watching him play in person was great. I wish Minter would have offered him.

I don't have any inside information on any of these recruits, but when is signing day? Feb 2nd? If so, Feb 3rd is too late. Anything between now and then is possible. Trattou did just change his mind to Florida and he's been a commit since last spring. It's never too late, IMO. I just hope ND doesn't resort to questionable recruiting practices.

After mc4052's post I see that signing day is Feb 7th. Feb 8th is too late. There is plenty of time.

In 2006, Smith recorded 126 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, 9 sacks, and had two fumble recoveries. He committed to the University of Iowa in late summer, but with the recent Irish offer, he now plans on making a final decision going into Natoinal Signing Day on Feb. 7.

Isn't it funny how in the Trattou thread we all kill him for changing schools and here we say how we hope Smith will leave Iowa? Signing day is the final day we should not be allowed to berade these kids until after that. Trattou is not Ronald Talley.

Don't say ALL. If you notice in my post, I don't want ND to become like other schools with questionable recruiting practices. I believe ND still has some ethics. When that changes I won't be a fan.

I don't despise Florida any more than before for "signing" Trattou. The situation sucks, but its fair game. Same goes for the reverse, in my opinion.

The better way to think of it, is not that Florida stole JT...but that JT jilted us.

All of our recruits could choose between any one of a dozen schools...if they decide to go somewhere else, no one forced them. I may think it's a mistake, but it's the KID's decision.

I have a problem with kids trying to steal kids from other schools. AkA wat Florida did with JT. From what I have read and gathered, it doenst seem that ND would be stealing this guy since he was Dieing to go to Notre Dame. It's all the choice of the kids.

P.S. I just got into recruiting this fall so as far as I know the Gary Gray situatino can make me sound like the biggest hipocrit....

There is a difference with the GG thing. He publicly decommitted from South Car before he came on his offical to ND. He didn't just go on a somewhat secret trip. There is a similarity though, Gary had committed to USCar back before JC committed to ND. So he was one of theirs for awhile just like JT was one of ours for a long time. But GG committed to ND in Sept. so USCar had plenty of time to find a replacement, JT decommitted from ND with 13 days until LOI day.
And this is what chaps my butt the most, is the fact that there isn't anytime left for us to really find a replacement for him.

I agree as well. I think that the Brian Smith situtation (if he does switch) could be viewed similarly to the JT situation. Maybe it is different because everyone knows that he wanted to go to ND (at least at one time).

Gary Gray was completely different. SC had a backup plan. We really don't have one. I agree that part of that is CW's fault. He should not have taken an "elite only" view on defense. He can do that on offense (where he is a proven commodity). But, not yet on defense. Hopefully, in a few years, Brown can have us at that level on defense as well.
