COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police said that an apartment belonging to Ohio State football players A.J. Hawk and Nick Mangold was burglarized in the days following the team's win over Michigan.

According to a Columbus Division of Police report, the burglary occurred sometime between Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 8 p.m.

Hawk, Mangold, and a third roommate, Jonathan Thomas, told police that their apartment in the 100 block of West Norwich Avenue was broken into and about $3,000 in cash, $1,425 in movies, two laptop computers, a $500 Gucci watch, two Microsoft X-Box games valued at a total of $500, a Sony Playstation game valued at $250 were taken.

"I don't have a lot, and now that little bit that I have is now gone," Mangold said.

Mangold, the Buckeyes' center, told NBC 4's Duarte Geraldino that he received a phone call from Hawk, telling him that their apartment was burglarized.

Police were not told about the crime until Nov. 28, according to their report.

Hawk and Mangold, both senior captains, helped lead the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Conference co-championship this past season. The Buckeyes received a Bowl Championship Series bid and will play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2.

Mangold said that he plans to take his valuables home, to Centerville, Ohio, but said he would have a few choice words for the thieves.
"Why do you have to do something like that -- to mess with a poor college kid's stuff?" Mangold said.

Hawk, a linebacker, who is up for numerous national awards, was out of town on Tuesday and was not available for comment.

I don't know about you, but I had very nice jobs while I was in college that paid what most FT people make (40-50k range) and I NEVER had $3,000 sitting around my apartment.

Where's Maurice Clarett when you need him?

Just like f@cking Ohio State to lie. They cheat and lie all the time. I wouldn't be shocked if Troy Smith gets in trouble by the time the game is.

Also, what two X-Box games cost $500? I'd like to say this doesn't sound like an insurance scam, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't.

Are those X-box games made of solid gold? $1425.00 worth of movies? I seriously doubt that.

When I was college, I was lucky to have two dollar bills to rub together. Had to get a campus job to make ends meet.

Sopmething doesn't ring true on this one.

I don't.....that's 142 DVDs at $10 each (not counting tax). Even less if you buy them at $15 and $20. Maybe the dude is big into movies and they buy em each week? Certain people I know have that sort of addiction (just ask my wife...errr, I mean this guy's wife...he has about 400 DVDs).

I just thank God that they didn't do anything to the 2 Mercedes Benzs outside the apartment. Plus, on a another positive note, no body stole the uncashed checks made out to Hawk and Man goo that were signed by alum and Tressel. Whoooooo, thank the Lord. I wouldn't want these boys to starve, plus how would they buy their weed and roids?

I don't know how these poor kids make it?

Remember that some athletes are not allowed to hold jobs during season and sometimes not during informal periods such as minicamps, etc. Most college athletes receive a stipend of $500 per month for housing, at least that is the going rate I've heard lately.

That rule has since changed I believe. Most of our offensive line was security at the local watering holes, but that was off season. Even during spring ball, they couldn't work. I was a doorman at a bar and checked IDs my last year. I was mainly there to scope every girl that walked in the door, but if there was trouble I called on the hogs. I saw some great ass kickings.

A bought a new CD once a month as a treat to myself. That $15 was just about what I had for fun money.

Right, I went back and edited my post. During the offseason, they are allowed to work but during the season (and sometimes during spring workouts) they are not allowed to and only receive their housing stipends.

Since this happened during football season, I doubt they have jobs unless you consider shaking boosters hands and kissing babies as a job. Man, I'd hate to see them get suspended before the bowl game.

....because you know if they did and we cracked their nuts, all you'd hear would be "Yes, ND won, but tO$U didn't have....."

But, come on....this is THE O$U.....where the only thing that gets suspended are NCAA rules.....

I've got some mixed reactions to this story.

First of all, the day before I was set to move back to college for my senior year I had everything I owned stolen. I literally moved into my house with just the clothes on my back. Though insurance covered my loss, depreciation took a big bite out of my check as did the $500 deductable. I added a few movies, video games, and "upgraded" my watch that I had stolen. Nothing major, but a few extra dollars here and there. Anybody who's been screwed so badly would understand where I'm coming from.

The movie collection, especially for three college-aged kids, didn't surprise me. The Xbox/Playstation line might be a bit deceiving as well. I'm sure the system, controllers, and games were all stolen together. And while the Gucci watch seemed a bit much, I upgraded my watch from $100 to $300.

That being said, there is something unsettling about $3,000 in cash being stolen. I cannot think of any legitimate reason why these kids should have $3,000 in cash. I can't imagine they receive their room and board stipends in cash, nor can I imagine their parents giving them this much money in cash. And why the hell, when they went home for Thanksgiving, would they leave that kind of scratch in their apartment? That kind of money belongs in one of two places: a bank, or never out of sight.

No matter what these guys are idiots. If this cash is illegal they are stupid for reporting it, and if it's legal they are stupid for not putting it in a bank where it belongs. I guess that OSU education is really paying off.
