That's a complicated question.
If you believe Rivals star rankings, at CMU he recruited full classes of 2* players (which is all you can really expect at a MAC school) and recruited Dan LeFevour.
At Cincinnati, he improved recruiting dramatically from the classes of virtually all 2* players under Dantonio to classes with many 3* players and a few 4* players. By all accounts, Kelly is well liked by the HS coaches in the greater Cincinnati area, and should be able to recruit well at ND. The most notable players that he recruited at Cincinnati would probably be Zach Collaros and Armon Binns.

Just out of curiousity and to play devil's advocate here....How is what D. Jones did any different then what BK just did? Jones wanted to improve his chances and took an opportunity for himself...BK just did the same exact thing...So, I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that you feel the same way about BK?
Bottomline...Jones isn't a quitter...He's done quite well for himself...He's going to wind up with a college degree and, by all accounts, that's quite an achievement...Why do ppl on here have to knock college kids just becuz they aren't on the ND roster? And this isn't just some "one-time thing"...I remember seeing ppl on here bash Tebow for crying after the SEC title game...WTF...I thought us ND fans had more class than to say such ridiculous crap or take pot-shots at college athletes...
Back to Kelly's recruiting....I think it's really an unknown...He has very likable personality...but he's never had the ability to really recruit nationally...I hope he lives up to the hype and can get to work ASAP.

I tend to not bash kids because the bottom line is they are college kids. I am still a fan of Joseph Fauria and look foreward to seeing him play at UCLA. I wish richard Jones all the best at UCF. Zach Frazer did what was best for himself because he knew he wasnt going to play at ND and is now the starter at UConn. Alot of people have bashed Chris Martin for decommitting and forgetthat this is a 17 year old kid who is about to make the biggest decision of his life and the person most responsible for him choosing ND is no longerthere.
I dont feel that way about Jones. This guy left the team during the season because he was benched. He tried to enroll in another school instead just a week later. The staff tried to talk him out of it and told him he could play if he switched poitions but he decided to bail on the team. That is quitting.
I actually agree on the Tebow thing. I thought that was pretty distasteful of guys calling him a bitch for losing the last regular season game of his career. I even mentioned that nobody called Golden Tate a bitch when he cried at his press conference.
Brian Kelly was not my choice and i am stilll trying to put together what he did or didnt do at Cincinnatti.

Watching Tebow crying after the SEC championship game made me cringe. I listened to Paul Hornung on the radio making fun of him. Paul said it is a football game Tim, "you don't cry after a football game". Plus, isn't Tebow 22 years old. That is something that I could accept after a high school football game. I'm okay with crying, but not after a football game.

if i am ever in a room and need to know if something stupid was said, all i need to do is looks at Paul Hornung; if his mouth is open, then i can be assured it was.
even the majority of nfl guys ive seen comment on it were fine with Tebow crying in that situation.

Developing players is the most important part IMO. Look at Gilyard. He was a 2* coming out of high school and became a first team all-american!

On a more serious note.....he will do fine with recruiting, this guy is a winner......this guy will be as good if not better than CW at recruiting.....take it to the bank.......

Even if that were so, they are 12-0. If we can still get top talent based on the ND name, with Kelly coaching....look out!

I would be interested in knowing what his reputation is for how hard he hits the recruiting trail. Charlie had no recruiting record either, but everyone knew about his work ethic. At ND, if you work hard, it will pay off in recruiting. But you can't slouch, b/c this is not Florida. 5-star prospects who grew up dreaming of donning gold helmets aren't growing on trees 10 yards from the coach's office in northern Indiana. He & his staff better be willing to work hard. If they are, with his reputation, I feel confident he'll do just fine.

On the upside, at least it doesn't look like this year's class is going to go completely in the toilet the way Willingham's last one did after he was fired. Although, Willingham's was kind of in the toilet to begin with when he was hired, so maybe that's an unfair comparison...

Did Kelly ever recruited any players at all, that are top tier talent? Notre Dame/Florida/USC type of recruits? If so, how many? a whole team worth? a whole offense/defense worth? He is going to need to do that now....

not in the long run. it may get pretty far against a schedule like next years, but ultimately it wont be good enough to regularly beat teams like Michigan (if they ever get it together), USC (who was probably as bad this year as they will ever be under Petey), and anyone they might match up with in a bcs bowl.
He will get 4's and a lot of 3's with a smattering of 5's... Look, Harbaugh doesn't recruit worth a shit and he's starting to win. What would Cincy have done against USC or Oregon this year? He'd more than hold his own. What if Cincy lays out Florida? Look at TCU... most of the wannabe's... the guys who talk sports on TV, felt the team that could have given Bama the best run for their money this year was TCU... how many 4's and 5's do they have?
If BK holds this 2010 class together, with a few more we are hoping for, and has a good season next year... he'll get a steady stream of 4's... And, I think a strong fundamentals coach can win with that at ND.
By the way... if all he gets are 2 & 3's at Cincy... who the hell wants to go to Cincy? Really..... a choice between OSU, OU, Florida, Bama, Texas, a good ND team - - - - or Cincy???? Get real. Only so many 5's to go around.

of course i have to rebut this because of my man crush on JH.
his 2009 class was rated as low as #15 and as high as #9. several scouts have his 2010 class rated anywhere from #13 to #8. if that isnt recruiting worth a shit at Stanford, i dont know what is.
i agree, though, if BK lands plenty of 4's, he will be fine. plenty of those 4's end up being 5 star talent, and viceversa.

Do not compare Cincy TCU and what Boise have done against Florida, and USC. These teams compete against pplayers of equal status and beat them because of coaching. The big east is no better than the Mountian West. These teams would not go undefeated in the Pac 10 or the SEC. The best coach in the world would lost at ND if he settles for 3 star players. You are not going to win national championships or beat USC if you cant recruit.

Brian Kelly didn't just leave Cincy because he was 5th on the coaching Depth Chart. If Jones had been the starter, but just didn't see the Irish going anywhere, and then transferred to a USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State type program? THEN you would have an accurate comparison.
As I look at the current commits on the main page, it becomes painfully obvious to me that this class needs help along the Offensive Line. That makes James and Henderson priorities #1 and #2 for Kelly. Ideally, I'd like us to close with 3 more OL's outside of Lombard.
After that, the target should be athletic players on the defensive side of the ball. Let's keep in mind a lot of these kids Notre Dame recruits are just 17-18 years old and will often grow into different positions. Don't get too caught up in whether they are a Safety, LB, DE, etc. at the High School level. The top two targets have to be Barr (can't lose this kid - he is a legacy) and Dietrich Riley (I've read this kid is a Football player, plain and simple).
