A few years back, win the bowl games switched up affiliations, it left some conferences without great #2 options.

ACC's second best game is the Camping World Bowl.
Big 12's second best game (in order of picking) is the Alamo bowl.
Pac12 second best is the Alamo bowl.

Meanwhile, the SEC's games are Citrus, Outback, TaxSlayer (old Gator) & Big10 is Citrus, Outback, Holiday, TaxSlayer.

The system has been designed to pit SEC vs Big 10 as much as possible on New Year's day games. Frankly, from a pure bowl game perspective of trying to sell tickets, can you blame them?

That didn't stop them from nearly beating the Big 12 champ and runner up though. Again, Iowa State only lost to Baylor, Iowa, and Oklahoma by a COMBINED 4 points. They may not have the stars, but they're a scrappy team that will be on upset mode. Texas receivers aren't that impressive outside of Duvernay, and those yards come against Big 12 defenses.

They are a well coached team that has an offense that can put up points. The difference for them between 1H and 2H is their running game. Breece Hall came on late in the year and that made them more balanced. If they played Iowa & Baylor again, they would win IMO with Hall as RB. Their loss to Okie State was a terrible game by Purdy (3 picks IIRC).
Long story short, this is arguably the second best Big12 team. ND will have their hands full.

CFP Rankings don't quite make sense to me. Georgia and Virginia get pasted and drop 1 spot. Utah drops 6.. Baylor holds.. Auburn and Alabama drop 1 without playing a game. Wisconsin is a top 10 despite losing to Illinois and getting punked by OSU twice.

I heard all year basically this ND team was playoff quality on this forum. Now people are wilting over playing...*squints*...Iowa State?

Don't get me wrong, Iowa State is good and capable of beating us but maybe that's just indicative of the fact that ND wasn't really playoff or even NY6 quality this year?

I'm sure people are looking at Iowa State who, Is rarely played (If EVER)in primetime.

It's just a bad matchup for us. Iowa State has been punching up all year long against everyone they've faced, while we failed to show up in some of our games. We finished the year strong, which is a positive sign, but the middle of the season was a very disappointing showing for a team that was playoff capable last year. Iowa State could potentially upset us, especially if we come out flat again. On the flip side, a win against Iowa State isn't going to turn heads, and it'll be completely forgotten within a week. No good comes from this.

Beating Michigan would have catapulted us ahead of the Michigan-Penn State-Wisconsin Big Ten circle jerk, and teams like Florida and Utah who beat no one but didn't lose quite as ugly. But we'd still be looking up at Big 12 Champ Oklahoma. And probably Georgia (who beat us) too.

Your kind of making my point for me, Iowa State is well coached enough to make this a good game, which I'll appreciate. But it will take a lot to go wrong for us to get annihilated. With Texas, I think it doesn't take as much for things to go wrong in a hurry. Colin Johnson and John Burt are no slouches regardless of their output this year. Again all it takes is one game for them to match their talent and potential which is much higher than Iowa States.

So on one hand, Im reading complaints about not being a top ten team due to other teams losses and then on the other hand, Im reading worries of losing to a 7-5 team that is full of 2-3 star players.

Which is it? Is ND a good team that got screwed by politics or is ND the team that should be worried about playing a 7-5 team full of 2-3 stars?

I mean, your program is either a good, confident program or it isnt. You cant be on both sides of the fence.

Iowa state scored 20 pts in the fourth quarter to make it that close vs OK after OK lead 42 to 21 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Do you think that was against their first string defense?

Iowa state beat Kansas, the worst team in D1, by 10. By 10. 10 points
Iowa state needed OT to beat Northern Iowa at Iowa State. Northern Iowa

Any "good" team would have zero fear against a program like Iowa state.

I'm not making that point at all. I'm pointing out that Iowa State is a well coached team that could very easily upset us, while I think Texas is not well coached. If the Cyclones come out fired up and we're flat, they could very easily upset us. Could we lose to Texas? Sure, but they've underachieved with the roster they have and were less impressive this season compared to Iowa State. Their records may be the same, but Iowa State nearly knocked off Iowa, Baylor, and Oklahoma, On the other hand, Texas actually lost to Iowa State while also losing to Baylor by 14 and having a larger deficit to Oklahoma than Iowa State did. The Cyclones are clearly the better team, but Texas gets the benefit of the doubt with voters because they're Texas. For that reason I would have much rather played Texas or K State. Better chance of winning those games, and the optics of beating a traditionally stronger team is better for our program.

A, it's about the team not being excited about the bowl matchup. That's the concern. Obviously the coaches have to make sure they are up for the game, but when dealing with humans...
B, yes this team only has 2 and 3 star players, but they are well coached. You don't think they won't come out super motivated to play Notre Dame and ruin any good feelings we have?
C, Kansas St went 8-4 and upset Oklahoma, so you can't just roll your eyes.
D, Kansas was definitely not the worst team in D1, you're wrong.
E, if you can't see how uninspiring this bowl matchup is and how it has all the makings of a let down for any good team, then I don't know what to tell you.

After Clemson had 3 failed tests before our bowl last year, they really need to do regular testing across the board on all athletes. It's not like the NCAA doesn't bring in enough money to make that happen.
