It's amazing that the media swarms to this story, yet there are many stories in which an armed citizen prevented something terrible happening.

And Jason Whitlock is a racist moron...the NRA is the "new KKK"?? Really?

I'm in no way saying that I have an issue with everyone's 2nd amendment right...I think the biggest issue is that in a fit of anger, insanity, or whatever the case may be...It is much easier to pull a trigger than it is to stab or choke somebody...It's like my dad always said to me, "I raised you to walk away from conflict. Not because I want you to be a b*tch. I just fear that it is so easy today to pull a trigger when you're really angry than handling it with your hands like we did back in the day." My 2 cents...IDK...

Then obviously that PERSON has issues that should be addressed. I get what you're saying...but taking away guns (or offering that as a solution) from responsible people because a few act irresponsibly is a terrible idea.

and the other 8 shots were out of mercy then?

...funny

go try and purchase a weapon from a legit gun dealer, and READ the form you fll out.

Then go get a concealed carry permit and READ the material in the course you take.

I don't know how you make it harder w/o forcing people to provide proof via medical records they aren't nuts.

Bingo. Are we so irresponsible of a society that we need to literally hand hold everyone on everything? (take for example all the warning lables on everyday items) And when something goes wrong (which is going to happen regardless of the amount of legislation) everyone looks to government to do something about it.

Are we not able to make our own decisions? You can only do so much before human nature takes over...

I'm not suggesting that...Trust, my dad would have a collection of guns if it weren't for my mother...I'm just pointing out where the concerns are on the other side. We're good.

And I obviously feel that their are issues that should be addressed, but sometimes we aren't so fortunate to know there were any issues before something tragic happens...I guess such is life

I can see where you can come to the conclusion that its easier to pull a trigger in a fit of anger...I guess if the person was a sociopath...

Yes the outcome is likely immediately more deadly, but the "hump" to clear that brings you to aim a weapon at someone, and fire it...you are either pick up a truck scared, or pick up a truck angry. Translate that state of mind to any other implement...including your hands, and the liklihood of you coming to your senses before mortal wounds are inflicted is about nil. The differnece there is, maybe the subject of your anger could wound you, slow you down, and run away...none of that with a gun, so thats an issue.

I leave it to the ever poetic; Immortal Technique "Any bitch nigga with a gun, can bust slugs
Any nigga with a red shirt can front like a blood
Even Puffy smoked a mother****er up in a club
But only a real thug can stab someone till they die
Standing in front of them, staring straight into their eyes"

lack of empathy makes a person a sociopath...rather they arived there by nature or nurture...still a problem across the entire spectrum of society...

as the song says those folks kill...implement doesn't matter.

Regardless if it's easy or not to shoot someone....That doesn't matter. Dead is dead. Murder is murder.

Why is this even coming up? It's just another excuse or a way to pass the blame from the person responsible....

Well....guns just make it toooooo easy to kill

Maybe, maybe not, you cant objectively say yes or no, as much has political leaders would liek to convince you(on both sides) but realize this, the US DOES objectively have major crime issues, the rates are insane compared to rest of developped countries

That has more to do with our societies facination with violence and our entitlement attitude, than guns.

Those same political parties have pitted us against each other (that rich guy has what is OWED to you) with class warfare.

Killing someone with a gun is much easier than with a knife. A knife is more intimate. I don't say that the way it sounds. But when you stab someone you watch the life and soul escape. To pull a trigger can be out of nerves or panic and then once you pull the trigger a lot of people just will keep going until the magazine is empty. I am a gun owner and have a CCP BUT I do not believe assault weapons should be legal be any means. When the second ammendment was written the had muskets! Not automatic weapons. And if someone asks how I know such things read my name again and hopefully it will click. Either way it's a tragedy like most gun related incidents an I pray for the families left behind.

Seriously. You can barely compare the two: one has a 20 sec reload time and a 1/2 chance of not even firing , the other: 12 rounds within secs, drop dead force too.

It fascinates me how somethings are destined to live forever in the US constitution but others are fully neglected (Declaration of war from congress--->meh)

In order to pull the trigger the gun must already be in your hand. That means an individual has already chosen to pick it up and arm him/herself. Most gun owners would never pick up a firearm when around a significant other, child, neighbor, etc especially not if they were arguing. It is not the time or the place for a weapon to be involved. This guy lost his cool and shot his bitch. Plain and simple, the gun had no more to do with it than the 40,000 people who die every year in auto accidents. I guess you suggest we ban really big and heavy dangerous trucks(similar to ASSAULT WEAPONS) to prevent more deaths.

Just because you are a Marine doesn't mean you have a better grasp of the constitution. I believe the Founding Fathers would be flabbergasted at the difference in arsenals between the federal govt and private citizens. I think any qualified American citizen should be able to own an automatic weapon, an RPG, a tank, an Apache helicopter, etc. Why are we so badly outgunned by law enforcement and the military? The 2nd Amendment wasn't written with muskets in mind...it was written with politicians like Nancy Pelosi on their mind. The 2nd Amendment protects us from egregious acts by our "elected officials". PS why didnt' you or Jason Whitlock mention 72% of all African American children are born out of wedlock. That is what is wrong in our culture, not guns.

It's always a bit odd when tragedies spark automatic-weapons-ban discussions...

If you're trying to prevent murder-suicides, or school-shootings, or movie-theater shootings, or accidental shootings, then just banning automatic weapons really isn't going to do the trick.

Very few people are killed with hunting rifles.

Note: If Dick Cheney isn't around, the odds are even lower.

yea...I hear ya. My issue is, whats a civilian doing with that kind of fire power. I mean I'm not just talking about a replica that is held to the same capacity as a hunting rifle...its when any ole dude can strap a drum on a rifle...just a bad idea. You gotta kinda draw a line when some dude can out gun a small police force with one gun. Thats not good for anyone.

I am a gun owner...more than I care to count, but I don't track to the rationale that those things need to be in the hands of the common Joe.

That's my take. Some of what people can legally own is pretty wild to me. I'm not a gun owner, so take it for what it's worth. I think the 2nd Amendment is fine. It's not going anywhere. But it can be limited. The 1st Amendment is pretty sacred, but there are limits. You can't use speech to incite or to libel. So, it's just a matter of what limits you think are reasonable.

As far as when to talk about the issue...when should we talk about it? It seems like those who oppose all limits to gun ownership say that any discussion now would be disrespectful. But, then the conversation never seems to take place.

All of that said, I'm not a big fan of Costas' speech the other day. I like him a lot. But, it seemed out of place.

If it's a law abiding citizen with no prior problems, who happens to have an interest in guns....why is that such a problem??

I mean, do we all forget that there are MILLIONS of gun owners around the country that own serious firepower and they don't harm anyone?

We love taking the exceptions and trying to create a new rule. Regardless of gun laws (even auto weapons) criminals will get them. You'd have to be an naive to think otherwise. So why not level the playing field?

And ask Chicago and DC how those strict gun bans are working. I guess they were hoping that all the punks and thugs out there would just lay down their firearms?

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson

Why should the government have more powerful weapons than the people they supposedly work for? I understand many people on this board like being dominated by politicians and police officers who are obviously smarter and better at making decisions than they are. It is unfortunate how many sheep and lemmings we have been left with in this once great country. Why do the cops need AK-47's? Why do most cops have high and tight hair like they're dealing with insurgents in Afghanistan? Once again, if a police officer is allowed to have a weapon then any law abiding, qualified American citizen with the financial resources should be allowed to own that same weapon. I guess I believe in freedom and many on this board believe in servitude.

Because no one wants a paranoid, anti-social, misfit in a tin foil hat, who tries to convince people on a college football board that they should distrust the government, to own an assault weapon?

Keep in mind that the "governments" that our founding fathers feared were based on birthright, not popular elections. They rejected the notion that merely being born into the proper family was mandate for you to be a ruler. I would venture to say that their views on a popularly elected government would likely be less harsh.
