So... In reading the article about how Weis is still collecting over $2Million a year from ND ($18Million once done), the article goes on to mention BKs compensation.

Current Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly received $1,187,272 from Notre Dame during the 2013 reporting period, though that number likely does not match his total earnings. The school notes that "the current head football coach is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University." Income from a source such as a shoe company would not have to be reported on the tax forms.

I realize this is not endorsements and all the other stuff added on, however... Mark Dantonio makes $5.5M, Stoops $5M.

That list is pretty revealing. In 2014 BK was the 64th highest paid coach in college football. (That list doesn't include endorsements for Kelly etc).

It would be nice if it were possible to get top talent without providing the golden parachute for mediocrity. Weis talks like ND screwed him over in the deal and that's the thing that I dislike most about him. He made more than most people make in a lifetime over a five year period and he talks like he's the victim.

I think BK is probably pretty fairly compensated for the generally 8-5 seasons he's delivered so far (he got performance incentives in 2012). I'm sure Savvy Jack has got the situation under control.

kelly made lowest "salary" out of all of the above.
now, we know thats not what he really makes but in principle (the weis ridiculousness aside) kellys salary on a comparative basis, and for perception, needs to be the highest of ALL of them IMO.

Quite the opposite. The optics of Kelly being ND's most highly compensated employee do not comport with the University's mission, which is why his true compensation is obscured through 3rd party contracts.

Rest assured that no one within the coaching world believes that Kelly is so poorly compensated, regardless of what the mouth breathers at USA Today continue to report based on an incomplete public record.

I read that yesterday and couldn't believe it. After doing some digging, BK's CURRENT compensation is $4 million, putting him at tied with a few others for 10th highest overall. I'd say that's fair.

I hear what you're saying but I was only comparing all of them to each other and no one else; wouldn't we rather have Kelly making more than Muffet McGraw?

I don't think "the optics" would suffer if he had a higher salary than her...do you?

Kelly does make more than Muffet McGraw. Much more.

McGraw's compensation is mostly salary paid by ND, whereas Kelly's is not. Why does that matter? This only comes up when these stupid "Coach's Pay" articles based on public records come out every year.

Agreed, Muffett will not make endorsements like the head football coach of Notre Dame will make.

my point is this: within the "ND coaching community" (Head M and W BB, hockey or any other sport) I just feel that BK should be the highest paid DIRECTLY by ND--no matter how much more he makes outside of ND. or what his "total comp" ends up being.

Again, why does it matter? I doubt Kelly, Brey and McGraw care even the slightest amount about who gets paid the highest salary from ND when that's only one portion of what they take home. "Total comp" is all that matters.
