Will Mays Demise Kill CALM?

Will Mays Demise Kill CALM?

Bill Would Lower TV Commercial Volume

Friday June 20, 2008
Have you ever noticed how some TV commercials sound louder than the programs you are watching? U.S. Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-California, 14th) has noticed, says it’s done on purpose, finds it annoying and has introduced a bill to make it stop. Rep. Eshoo’s Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, or CALM, would order the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create and enforce federal regulations requiring that television advertisements not be excessively noisy.
"Most Americans are not overjoyed to watch television commercials, but they are willing to tolerate them to sustain free over-the-air television," said Eshoo in her introductory remarks. "What annoys all of us is the sudden increase of volume when commercials are aired." According the Rep. Eshoo, advertisers too often record their commercials at maximum volume simply to grab the viewer’s attention. Her bill (H.R. 6209), would require that commercials be aired at the same volume level as the programs they accompany. The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act was introduced on June 9, 2008 and has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Not as long as the sham Shamwow (check consumers report on that ripoff) guy and the male enhancement crowd continue to create new customers for the hearing aid industry.

He annoyed the crap out of me until I saw him on "pitchmen". Seemed like a normal, hard-working guy when he wasn't screaming on a commercial. RIP

That's the stuff you can make a chain link with right?

I haven't tried that application yet, but it has millions of uses. I used it to secure some edging on my hard wood floors, I filled some cracks in some masonry, and the list goes on and on...Great stuff!

Anthony Sullivan is "that British guy" you're thinking of.

And it's "The Big City Slider Station" that someone else was thinking of...

They say celeb deaths come in threes. With Jacko, Ed McMahon, and Farrah gone, leave it to Billy Mays to throw ONE MORE IN FOR FREE!!!

It would've been funny if that'd been the first, or even second, time I'd heard that joke since he died.

Be more original, pls!

Wabash - I laughed my ass off! That was the first time I heard it. Then again, I have been up in the mountains for the last 4 days with no contact and no e-mail or TV, so take if for what it's worth.

Autopsy: Cocaine contributed to Billy Mays' death

Autopsy: Cocaine contributed to Billy Mays' death

Entertainment | Autopsy: Cocaine contributed to Billy Mays' death | Seattle Times Newspaper

An autopsy report shows that cocaine use contributed to the heart disease that suddenly killed TV pitchman Billy Mays in June, officials announced Friday.
The Hillsborough County medical examiner's office previously determined that the bearded, boisterous TV spokesman had a heart attack in his sleep. His wife found him unresponsive in bed in their Tampa condo June 28.

...

While heart disease was the primary cause of death, a report released Friday by the medical examiner listed cocaine as a "contributory cause of death."
The medical examiner "concluded that cocaine use caused or contributed to the development of his heart disease, and thereby contributed to his death," the office said in a press release.
The office said Mays last used cocaine in the few days before his death but was not under the influence of the drug when he died. ...

Cocaine can raise the arterial blood pressure, directly cause thickening of the left wall of the ventricle and accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries, the release said.
The toxicology tests also showed therapeutic amounts of painkillers hydrocodone, oxycodone and tramadol, as well as anti-anxiety drugs alprazolam and diazepam. Mays had suffered hip problems and was scheduled for hip-replacement surgery the day after he was found dead.

Interesting. Never would have pegged him for a coke-head. He was so mellow and low-key.
