The National love they're getting in the preseason predictions is pretty crazy. I know the two RB stayed, but did they bring in any kind of WR help?

Yeah, they were very active in the transfer portal to try and plug that glaring hole from a year ago. Added Trebor Pena ('Cuse), Kyron Hudson (USC) and Devonte Ross (Troy). Edited: All three are expected to start immediately, and combined for some gaudy numbers a year ago: 2,446 yards and 23 TDs.

They return 6 starters on a very productive defense and added Knowles. Hate to admit it but I do believe they'll be very good next year, if Allar finally rises to the occasion with the WR help.

With the power having shifted to the region again (scUM and tOSU winning the last NC, ND in the final), I really don't know if they're going to rise to the level of being able to reach a playoff final. No way they get a draw like they did last year.

Their schedule starts off rather favorable. Three home games, bye, home vs Oregon. Then away to UCLA. After another home game, they go away to Iowa and Ohio State. No Michigan this year either.

The used car salesman in Minny gets a ginormous extension.

Talk about low expectations as a program... What has he done to deserve that lol. One 10+ win season in 2019? Couple of 8 and 9 win years?

His winning percentage at Min is .597. The program's overall win % is .573. Open the checkbook!

There are only four coaches in their history with more wins than he has, and with 7 more he'll pass Glen Mason.

Bowl eligible every season but his first and Covid. They have to be liking that.

He's done fine for their standards, I'm sure. But it should also be telling that after all this time, nobody else has really pursued him.

Hey, good for the Gophers. We can't all be blue bloods, I suppose.

It feels like a Narduzzi at Pitt situation. "We've got our guy!" The rest of the country: "Cool."

It’s a 6 year deal, so it’s not like he’s setting the pace for HC salaries. No way he should. Gophers are definitely overpaying but I imagine the feeling of being in open waters in the Big10 without having the West division as a safety blanket has injected some urgency into their athletic department.

I'm sure he thought he'd be out of there by now and on to a bigger and more prestigious program.

I mean has the best winning percentage for a coach at Minnesota since 1950. Maybe he hasn't made them elite, but they've for sure taken a step up from historical standards since he's gotten there.
His winning percentage is .598, his predecessor’s was .579. I’m not sure the one game improvement per season is worth a 6 year extension.

Re: Fleck vs Glen Mason, I think the two have had pretty comparable performances considering where the program was at the beginning of their tenure, and the strength of opponents played in both eras. Fleck clearly has the fanbase engaged at a higher level though.

Kirk just rolled over his $300M in career earnings and said - Ouch baby, very ouch
He certainly did a good job of betting on himself and accepting franchise tags and/or short-term extensions, and he's stayed healthy. Dude has made a ton of money

This is a good point, and I wonder if maybe the juice just isn't worth the squeeze. I was a fan of his for what he did at WMU. There is some baggage, however, and maybe the bigger programs who have had openings recently have probably vetted that and decided that maybe they don't need any additional drama than they've already had in recent years?

Or he could be happy up in Minneapolis. They're obviously happy with him.

It is interesting when you consider his trajectory has just kind of stalled. Which isn't a bad thing. See Scott Frost. Maybe he's good with where he's at. He was never a coordinator, took a MAC bottom feeder to a big bowl game and parlayed it into a Big Ten job. Maybe it's just a good fit for the time being for both parties.

The next logical moves would be tOSU, scUM, PSU and ND right? Perhaps all of them want nothing to do with it and have made their choices. Maybe Fleck wasn't interested in any of them as well. It's all speculation at this point, but yeah, you would think that by now he'd have moved on to something bigger. That hasn't happened.

Charmin soft. Cignetti fits in perfectly in the B1G.

eta: just to clarify the soft comment, IU now has 0 P4 OOC opponents for the next 5 years. Bitch-ass coach.
P4 conference realignment has ruined this sport. National games are gone. Everything has become regional with an eye solely on reaching a now bloated playoff. "9-3 gives us a solid chance of being one of the 16 participants. So, let's seemingly lower our actual competitive schedule down to 9 games." (all in conference).

They play Michigan, Penn State, Iowa, MSU, and USC in 27 as well. Not going to help them.

UVA shouldn't have been a test for any team making the playoffs anyway.
Exactly. But at least they're a borderline respectable non-conference opponent. Paying a bottom-tier P4 squad $0.5MM to remove them from the schedule and go with FCS or FCS caliber opponents is weak shit.
