I know all of u are probably sick of the media saying we need more athletic guys but out defense is so slow if we dont get speed we arent going to be able to stop any offense. We also need a solid running back who has the break out speed and doesnt get injured like armando does i just think we need to recruit more athleticism for next year.

I agree that there is a massive difference between the athleticism of a player like Manti and Brian Smith. However, only a few teams have stacked rosters of players like Manti.

This is just my opinion but I think ND plays too conservative on the defensive side of the ball. Both in player selection and scheme.

Take for example Filer. That kid is just as athletic as any OLB in the nation IMO. Yet he hardly ever plays. The reason for this, IMO, is because the intelligence level of the ND team is much higher than other programs.

If you are a coach and you create a game plan, that is your vision. When you have a meeting with your position or unit, you want to make sure that position or unit is on the same page as you. That is the safest way for a coach to play it.

At ND, pretty much the entire team is smart or above average. So some players are able to understand the playbook and thus provide a level a comfort for the coaches. What this leads to, once again IMO, is a group of players who know what they should do but are at times unable to physically perform the task.

If you compare this to a team that has players with below average intelligence, the coach is forced to adjust their game plan and get the best athletes on the field. Essentially...see the ball and go get it. On a team like this, Filer would start over Brian Smith.

So what the coaches need to do is more watching and less listening. They need to simply play the best athletes and build a game plan around them. Including their mistakes. In the end, the production of being able to do things would outweigh being out of position because you were not strong or fast enough.

I do agree with your statement. But, look at the U of M defense. They seem to have some speed, but still can't stop anyone. Kelly has an ability to make players play faster and stronger than expected. Give him a year or two and our D will be respectable.

I think the root of ND's defensive problems are on the defensive line. Look back at Weis's good recruiting classes and they are still lacking the big time d-line recruit. The switching from 3-4 to 4-3 back and forth a couple time probably didn't help. But if ND can bring in top defensive line talent to stop the run and pressure the QB it's a whole different defense.

I think we need to recruit more players that will allow us to score more and give up fewer points.

I think its just as much an issue of changing scheme every year for 4 years in a row. If you are pausing just a split second to remember an assignment. You are going to be a step slow anywhere you go during that play.

I guarantee this defense would look faster if they were in the 3rd year of this particular scheme.

You bring up an excellent point. We have switched defenses back and forth, and on the offensive side of the ball are trying to implement a new system as well. Too much thinking on both sides of the ball have killed us this year at times. As guys get more comfortable with the system and knowing their assignments, things will look a whole lot better. We have some very athletic guys now and are continuing to bring some athleticism in this next recruiting class. I think we are much better next year after having played and learned alot this year.

Assuming of course that the "Pound of Flesh Brigade" doesn't get their way and have Bobby Diaco fired?

It is honestly the most annoying part of being an ND fan. The f*cksticks with the "Back in my day" and "When Ara was coach" refrains. Like either of those things have relevance to 2010 college football reality?

I'm in a woeful minority on this but I believe that we are only three things short of being a team which could go for ten or eleven wins against the schedule this year: a). a quarterback who could actually run the offense [i.e. make the proper reads, relax and fire it]; b) a pass rush [and we'd then see that our DBs were pretty d#@# good]; and c). some actual fiery leadership [not theoretical or "assigned" leadership]. One of those three is primarily "athletic". [and might require four new guys--two OLBs and two DEs]. Otherwise I believe we have pretty good athletes.

I'm sorry but isn't this kind of a DUH thread?
Of course we need a better more athletic Defense. Of course we need a Running Back that has break out speed...and the list goes on.

Like Canadian wrote in sarcasm. Its just pretty redundant.

I'm with you, though I'd switch a slightly better O-line for QB. I think Dayne was more than up to the task.
