i have never played a dragon quest game or a persona title, but i really need to. the later personas are still upwards to 30$, Valkyria chronicles was too much strategy, but i really didnt give it much of a chance, maybe i should. love the mass effects, i rented dragon age and really liked it but never got around to buying it. i am downloading kotr as we speak!

You seem to enjoy traditional JRPGs, in which case Dragon Quest VIII will be right up your alley. As an added bonus, the art in that game was done by the same people that did Dragon Ball Z. The visual style is really stunning.

The Presona series is great. Essentially, both games are traditional JRPGs mixed with a kind of social sim. They are a little hard to explain, but the fact that they are still selling for that much is a good testament to their quality.

Valkyria Chronicles does require that you give it a chance, as it kind of asks you to jump right in at the deep end, but I found it to be a great game once I got the hang of it.

yea im pretty old school. i like a world map and airships, and goofy stuff like that. but it doesnt have to be totally traditional for me to like, need a good story, and preferably a main character thats not totally annoying. Yuri from tales of vesperia or jaster from rogue galaxy were two of the best main chars in a jrpg i think ive ever.

the only problem i have now is finding time to play these things!! im not one of those guys that needs every secret and every side quest but these things still take 30-40 hrs!

ill have to snatch up dragon quest or something next time i take a trip to gamestop.

wow... well, these games/movies/books whatever... the whole fantasy genre really isn't my thing...

but I can still understand... I can really get lost in NCAA, Fifa or MLB The Show when those games first come out...

Dragon Age is my new RPG game. The first was a blast 2nd a little less, and they are supposed to come out with a 3rd soon (so I hear). Decent selection of toons to run with.
I must admit NCAA is my fav though, dont really like madden or FIFA or any others (wait I do like Tiger Woods).

Go Irish

PS KOTOR has to be the best rpg I've ever played on a console.

Mass Effect. If you do not know of this series or have not played this series, you have never truly played a fantastic RPG.

yep no doubt, beat both, waiting on the third, actually playing KoTR right now and i can see all the similarities between that and mass effect, this should hold me over til the third mass effect.

Secret of Mana for the SNES is an awesome JRPG game.

FF series up to 10 were the best, but have now become far too cinematic/anime for me to even enjoy.

secret of mana was cool, snes had a lot of good ones.

they say ffxii was the last true final fantasy, xiii totally sucked imho, hopefully they redeem themselves with ff versus xiii, ffxiv is supposed to be another mmo.

wow that was a lot of abbreviating.

p.s. good call to the guys that suggested KoTR, loving it right now.

Be interesting to do a list of people's favorite RPGs...

Mine would have to be

1)Baldur's Gate II
2) Morrowind (TES III)
3) KOTOR
4)Chrono Cross/Trigger
5) Mass Effect

With a tip of the hat to Zelda OoT and AC:Brotherhood as not quite-RPGs but amazing games.

top five would be tough for me to narrow down, maybe a top 8. Just ones i have played.

8. Phantasy Star Online - only mmo i really liked
7. FFX - last of the great Final Fantasies
6. FFVIII - really mixed opinions from FF enthusiasts, but i thought it was pretty awesome
5. Mass Effect 2 - a little less rpgish than the first, but amazing game nonetheless.
4. Rogue Galaxy - probably the most fun i had playing an rpg, so much fun!
3. Mass Effect - I hated this game this first time i tried it, glad i gave it a chance!
2. Tales of Vesperia - I felt like a kid again when i played this game.
1. Final Fantasy VII - its cliche i know, but this is really where the addiction started; havent shook it yet.

there are so many i could list, deus ex, anachronox, septerra core, breath of fire, xenogears. lists are fun but they're never satisfying to me when im done, always feel like something has been left out.

I meant ME2, having a PS3 I never got to play the first one.

Have you ever played the Baldur's Gate Series (especially 2)?

I agree. The reason why people didn't like FF VIII was because it is, IMO, inferior to FF VII. FF VIII is great, but FF VII is the greatest game of all-time IMO.

i haven't, are they similar to the diablo games?

I'll make mine a top 10.

Great List!!! all great games i forgot suikoden II the best in the series. did you ever play Skies of Arcadia on the dreamcast?

Yeah its fate was pretty much sealed when FFVII was made, with all the appreciation and accolades VII recieved it would have been impossible for VIII to live up to the hype, I also think IX recieved more praise because it followed VIII, and i thought IX was a pile of garbage.

Same perspective, but besides that it's really different. BG2 is much more of a pure RPG while Diablo is more of an action game. Along with Planescape:torment and the first 2 fallout games, it's considered a masterpiece of the genre.

ohhh yeah i think i have played this a while back, bioware has a pretty impressive resume.

i'll have to see if i can find it somewhere, maybe i can d/l it.

i've played planescape and the fallouts. starting this thread has made me realize just how many games i've missed.

its impossible to play all of them, but dang it sucks missing a really good one.

BTW you need to play ME1.

I still have Skies. Great game, but I prefer Grandia II.

FF VIII is better than IX, I don't care what people say.

Welcome to Steam

I know a few, and FFVII is my favorite ever.
Oblivion was very very good as well, although kind of a pain in the butt at times. After FFVIII I feel that the series kind of fell off

FFVII is the game that really got me started, i never really played games like that before.

it was always sonic, or mario or ninja turtles, games like that.

when i started playing FFVII i was totally blown away, it was like playing a movie!

i loved recruiting new characters to join your party, loved the mini games within the game, the search for the ultimate weapons. it was soo awesome, there was so much to do and you weren't confined by the typical "start at point A, get to point B, Repeat"

I never knew games could be like that.

ever since then i have had the insatiable need for more rpgs, its pretty awesome when a game can grab you and not let go. i still like shooters and other games as well but rpgs is where its at!

there are few things in life that have any level of popularity that I understand less than the FF series....

you can throw Final Fantasy up there with American Idol and Lady Gaga imo... how are these things popular...?

just my two cents

i am not a fan of american idol, nor do i listen to much lady gaga.

Final Fantasy is just the most recognized franchise of rpgs, its a small, small fraction of the entire genre though. but FFVII pretty much brought the rpg genre from a niche game to mainstream audiences.

This is why it is very popular, among rpg'rs that is.

Squaresoft(the makers of Final Fantasy) pretty much set an entire standard for all other future rpgs to be measured by when they created FFVII and, its debatable that they havent lived up to it since.

I didnt really make this thread to make you a "believer" just wanted to see who else shared the same passion for rpgs as me, and to my surprise there are some on here.

obviously, you are not one of them, but thats ok. nobody's perfect;)

Maybe the other rpg'rs on this thread would like to start a club on IE, maybe we follow irishnfl's lead and add our favorite rpg character as our avatar, and come up with titles and a numbering system to put in our signatures to identify one another. i know the softball message board i am a part of has a ton of these.

i know i was just telling you why it is so popular. among certain fans of the genre. because it is the most recognizable name in rpgs, kinda like ND in college football, and the yankees in baseball.

some rpgr's love FF some hate FF.

you would probably really enjoy the mass effect stuff, is more of an action game with rpg elements. assassins creed even has some rpgish qualities to it as well.

yeah I liked AC2... but some rpg fans get all hot and bothered about calling it an rpg so I didn't mention it...

haha every fanbase has its snobs i guess. the line that differentiates an action game from an rpg now is so blurred who knows whats what.
