Wow. I believe that might be your first contraversial post in the bunker, buddy. Definitely an interesting topic.

With the China stuff thread going strong, it would be great to see a post on how you would handle an invasion on the US. I know this is about as unlikely of a situation that we would ever get into, but that's why it would be an interesting "prep" scenario.

Thanks for the posts. They are always good reads.

Thanks my friend! I appreciate that.

The China situation definitely is good for sparking discussions. I firmly believe the Chinese would be very inclined to use a low earth atmosphere nuke detonation (or several) to create an EMP. If our grid gets wiped out beforehand, we are in serious trouble. Between EMP's and cyber attacks, the Chinese threat is very real without them even having to put boots on the ground right away. If that were to happen, I would get as far up in to the mountains as possible and hope and pray. Maybe I will work on that for my next post!

Glad you enjoy the reading!

China would definitely use an EMP, but without an apt Navy to get supplies and troops here, an invasion by Chinese is impossible. But they wouldn't have to invade if they could just destroy the infrastructure. They could do that with just calling us on their debt.

Can I get an add to the preppers' group?

How do you get added to preppers group? Sorry if I missed that.

I would say an attack on our power grid is likely/probable. You can take out a huge section with one attack. It's the wave of the future.

All invites have been sent as requested above. Sorry for the delay. The wife and I were up in the mountains for the long weekend and I can't do a lot of this stuff on my phone. Thanks again for the interest.

Merry Christmas everyone! Remember, prepping isn't about being prepared just for a zombie apocalypse, nuclear war, or invasion from outer space.

Traveling this Christmas, be sure you have some supplies ready for emergencies. Even if you are just going a short distance, anything can happen and you can find yourself in trouble very quickly. So, be safe, be ready for emergencies and have a Merry Christmas.

For I.E. Bunker members, thanks for taking part in the social group. Your interest and input is appreciated and I look forward to more exchanges of ideas in 2014.

Cheers!

Merry Christmas, boys. Glad we are able to discuss these things in open dialogue without insulting each other. May you all have a blessed, and prepped, new Year.

Took my first step in becoming a Prepper and received for Christmas a JOOS Portable Solar Charger. It is pretty solid.

I'm interested in an invite to this group. This thread is basically a tremendous "Prepping for Dummies" guide that I intend to take full advantage of in the very near future.

Hey All, sorry I have been MIA here and in the Bunker. The flu really hit me hard the last few weeks and then trying to play catch up at work has taken a toll as well. I have some posts written and ready to go for the Bunker.

adsnorri and IrishLion, I appreciate the interest. I will get invites sent out shortly.

Hey everyone, latest post is up in the bunker. Sorry it has taken me so long. Been a rough couple of weeks. One of my dogs was ill and then I had to put her down last week. She had been with me 16 years - longer than I have even known my wife.

So, this post was a long time delayed.

Sorry again. Hope you all enjoy!

Damn man, very sorry to hear that. It is always a rough thing to lose a pet, especially one you've had for so long.

So Generac home generator system, looks pretty cool but I worry about the nat gas supply. Anyone have a clue on if gas supply tends to get interrupted in hurricane/ice storm type situations? Also if you can switch to propane it seems a portable tank wouldn't last long.

The real thing I am prepping for is the eventual 1 week out of power situation that is bound to hit sometime when either a hurricane comes inland to get us, in which case we are potentially dealing with 90 degree temps or an ice/snow storm dumps a foot of snow on us and puts power out for a week, in which case you worry about cold. Both have happened in the last 20 years around Raleigh and IMO just a matter of time before we get hit again.

Was talking with someone who wired their generator back into their panel which seems like the easiest route if you can find an electrician to hook it up off the record. Not sure what type of trouble you can get in for that but seems might be worth the risk.

This will work but it still leaves a lot of room for error. If you want to do it properly for a generator you won't wan't to cut the end off. Buy one of these boxes (picture A). Run from that box on the outside of your house to your main panel with a 10 gauge three wire with ground romex (2-hots, 1-neutral, and 1-ground). Land your ground wire with your other grounds. Land your neutral wire with your neutrals. Then land your two hot wires on a two pole 30 amp breaker. Put that two pull breaker in the top right corner and buy a interlock like this (Website A).
Then when the power goes out you can wheel your Generator outside while off and plug it in. Then you can turn the generator on. When you go in the electrical panel the interlock will not let turn the generator power on without turning off the main. (nice if you don't fully understand what you are doing, your wife doesn't understand, you forget, or you go to sell your house) Then I would turn the all the individual breakers off. Flip on the generator breaker (it will require the main being shut off because of the interlock) and slowly turn on what you want to run to help take the initial inrush of everything turning on off the generator. Then you are good to go. The first time you run it you may want to put an amp meter on everything so you know what can run on your generator and what can't so you don't overload your generator.
If you do this your local Lineman and Electricians will greatly appreciate it. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also if you aren't comfortable doing this ask an electrician to do it.

Got unlazy and read back a bit. Think I'll be printing this off and talking to an electrician about it. Any idea what this should cost to have installed? Also, still curious about the whole home generator questions I started with.

Control freak in me likes the idea of gasoline versus nat gas since I can be responsible for the fuel supply and rationing. No control over the gas utility and stacking up propane cylinders seems really inefficient and harder to refuel.

If anyone else wants an invite to the I.E. Bunker social group, just let me know. The admissions standards are very low. After all, we let ACamp in.
