BRECKENRIDGE, Texas — A Texas man mowing his lawn died after he was attacked by a swarm of “very aggressive” bees, authorities said.

Thomas Hicks, 70, of Breckenridge, died after going into cardiac arrest Monday, KTXS reported. A second patient, Hicks’ wife, Zoni Hicks, was taken to an area hospital for treatment and later released, the television station reported.

“Medics and firefighters entered (the) home through a swarm of bees and started emergency care of (a) patient that had suffered a heart episode,” the Breckenridge Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

Zoni Hicks told KTAB that she had been out grocery shopping. When she returned, her husband was screaming and covered in bees, the television station reported.

“I said, ‘Honey, please don’t go back in the back area, because those bees are back there,’ and he said, ‘I won’t, I promise,” Zoni Hicks told the television station. “He was covered in like, I mean, you couldn’t even see his back and his whole head. He was just covered in killer bees.”“They were stinging him all in the yard. He was running in the backyard, the side yard, the front yard, trying to get them off of him, but they were relentless,” Zoni Hicks told KRBC. “They just wouldn’t stop. They were just everywhere, and they were stinging, and they clung to you.”

Joey Venekamp, a local beekeeper, was brought to the scene and successfully located the hive, which was located in a hollowed-out dead tree, KTAB reported. He removed the hive with hand tools and foam, KTXS reported.

“Once one of them stings it’s going to let off a pheromone and that’s like a red flag to the other ones,” Venekamp told KTAB. “The best thing to do is take cover.”

The Houston tiger sighting reminds me of another cat story from this week. A Chinese safari park failed to alert the public that 3 of its leopards had escaped. For more than two weeks, park officials kept quiet about it or denied any escape when questioned, while trying to recover the animals on its own. It was only when the locals began reporting seeing the cats that the zoo officials finally stopped denying the truth and admitted they'd escaped two weeks before. Two have been recaptured without incident, but the third is still loose. Some of the top officials at the zoo and the zoo's attorney have been arrested.

Let's hope those cats don't cause an outbreak like that damn bat.

I talked to my brother this morning and told him about the leopards in China, and said the one still on the loose had been spotted. He immediately replied, "Well yeah, it's a leopard." Groan.

Python adds some slithery spice to Woolworths experience [watch]

A ‘super mellow’ slithery customer unexpectedly spiced up an Australian woman’s shopping experience at a Sydney Woolworths store.

Slithery snake spotted at Woolworths in Glenorie, Sydney Image via YouTube Sunrise

The scene is set…It’s a normal Tuesday afternoon and you’re grabbing some spices for your chicken dish, then out of nowhere! A 3m snake jumps out from between the spices! This Woolworths shopper certainly had one heck of a day.

WOOLWORTHS SHOPPER SPOTS THE SNAKE

It was a normal day for Helaina Alati who was shopping at a Woolworths in Glenorie, Sydney. Alati was in the spice aisle of her local Woolworths, when the snake “jumped” out at her.
“I was browsing and turned to my left and he had come out and his face was about 20cm from mine, just looking at me,” she told 7News.
She said it was almost like the python was asking her to take him outside.

Alati described the snake as “super mellow” saying he wasn’t aggressive at all. Luckily for everyone, Alati is a former volunteer snake catcher so she grabbed her snake bag and took him safely back to the bush.
She reassured everyone that there was nothing to worry about.
“I’m glad I’m the one that found him, most people would have freaked out. Don’t want to demonise these beautiful animals anymore”, she said.

A Woolworths spokesperson responded to the news and emphasised that the matter was dealt with safely and calmly.
“Once it [the snake] was sighted, our team members reacted quickly and calmly to cordon off the area for the safety of customers. A snake catcher removed the slithery customer, who was released safely into the bushland shortly after.”

What an eventful day it must have been for Helaina Alati! Leaving the house for a few spices and coming home after catching a three-meter snake!

This kid has to be feeling pretty good. Set a Minnesota state record for largest Pike. Then this other guy gets a huge Musky.

This record-breaking fish was so huge the Illinois angler could barely reel it in

BY KAITLYN ALANIS

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 5:41 PM Brecken Kobylecky with the largest northern pike that has been caught and released in Minnesota. MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

A 15-year-old angler from Illinois had a record-breaking experience while in Minnesota earlier this summer.

Not only did Brecken Kobylecky catch the biggest fish of his lifetime, he also landed the largest northern pike that has ever been caught and released in Minnesota.

And the fish was so huge the teen from Geneva almost couldn’t reel it in.

“We hooked onto a huge pike that was barely hooked, and could hardly land it due to the sheer size and weight of the fish,” Kobylecky said, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The fish, caught June 19 on Basswood Lake, was 46 1/4 inches long, the state wildlife department said. Almost three months later, on Sept. 8, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced it had certified Kobylecky’s catch as the new record catch-and-release northern pike.

It beat out the previous northern pike, measuring 45 1/4 inches, reeled in on the Rainy River in 2018. If Kobylecky’s Ely-based fishing tour ended just 10 minutes sooner, the record may not have been beat. He reeled it in while on his final 10 minutes of his final day fishing with his guide, officials said.

Following the catch, officials said they took a few photos before releasing the pike back into the wild.

“The whole experience went by in a flash, but it was an experience of a lifetime I’ll never forget,” Kobylecky told the department.

ANOTHER RECORD FISH

About a month after Kobylecky landed his northern pike, another visiting fisherman reeled in a huge fish. And while this one didn’t break any Minnesota records, it did tie.

While fishing Lake Vermilion on July 23, a Wisconsin man matched the state’s record for biggest catch-and-release muskellunge, the department said. The fish measured 57 1/4 inch inches, tying a 2019 muskie caught in the same lake.
Todd Kirby with a record-tying muskie caught and released in Minnesota. MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
“That Friday night we were up against the weather,” Todd Kirby told wildlife officials. “There was a huge storm front moving through creating extremely unstable conditions. The humidity was high, and storm clouds were building. It was one of those nights that the fish seemed to be super active, our boat had multiple chases, one resulting in a 48 inch fish in the net — at that time my personal best.”

Amid the storm, Kirby and his team continued fishing. Then, at about 10:30 p.m., Kirby heard a large “thud” hit his fishing line.

The baited line was about 15 yards from his boat when Kirby began reeling it in.

“I compared it to reeling in a large moving ‘log’ and after a few dark splashes, she was in the net. Everything just happened so fast!” Kirby said, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

“My bait just so happened to be the one that she ate, but that whole night couldn’t have been possible without the help of John Gavic and Will Gavic,” Kirby said. “Muskie fishing is a team effort, and when you have a good team on your side, landing a fish of that caliber creates a memory of a lifetime.”

On a more somber note.

Authorities catch 500lb alligator believed to have eaten Louisiana man

12ft-long alligator captured with what appeared to be human remains in his stomach, after a 71-year-old man went missing.
A 12ft-long, 504lb alligator believed to have attacked and killed a 71-year-old Louisiana man in Hurricane Ida’s aftermath was captured with what appeared to be human remains in its stomach, local authorities said.

Timothy Satterlee Sr vanished on 30 August, while checking on the contents of a shed at his home in Slidell, Louisiana, as flood waters engulfed the area.

After his wife heard a splash, she discovered her husband being gripped in a “death roll” by a huge alligator.

By the time she could intervene, the beast had already ripped off Satterlee’s arm and rendered him unconscious.

She pulled him to the steps of their home and — with neither her phone nor 911 working — in a desperate move she climbed into a small boat in search of help.

But when deputies finally arrived, Satterlee wasn’t there any more.

“She just never thought in her wildest nightmares that she would get back and he’d be gone,” said Lance Vitter, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Satterlee’s disappearance set off a two-week search that ended on Monday, after an alligator was caught in a trap near where Satterlee had gone missing, the St Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Agents euthanized and cut open the alligator, where they discovered “the upper parts of a human body”, according to Vitter.

“Once the alligator was searched, it was discovered to have what appears to be human remains inside its stomach,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Investigators will work with the St Tammany parish coroner’s office to verify those remains belong to Timothy Satterlee.”

Interesting day so far. The Bishop clan has moved to Montana due to my wife's promotion. We're now in black bear country and they're VERY common here at the park where we're going to be living. So, we got here last night and are now unpacking. My wife and 11-year-old daughter were in the house and I was in the back of the truck when one of the dogs went ballistic. Within a minute, the park LE officer comes driving into my yard and jumps out with a 12 gauge and runs into my back yard. As I climbed down from the truck, I heard Bam!... Bam!Bam!. My first thought was that my daughter had finally killed her mom.

A 2-year-old bear recently kicked out by its mom has been making a nuisance of himself in the neighborhood for the past month and my neighbor had chased him from his yard into mine, then called the LE who was only a block away. The yards in my new neighborhood all have apple or mulberry trees, so the bears just make themselves at home and wander through everyone's yards as they please. Gonna take some getting used to.

This sounds very similar to what just happened near my family's home... in northwest New Jersey. It's become ridiculously overpopulated with bears. Our neighbor went out to get the mail and a young solo bear attacked her. Would have killed her if not for someone driving by on what is otherwise a fairly desolate road.

They typically keep their distance from humans and are probably my favorite non-domesticated animal to watch, but get used to having your garbage cans knocked down if they smell something sweet in them, and if you have bird feeders in your backyard, those won't last long.

Saw a snake skin on the golf course yesterday and it freaked me out. No thank you to bears.

On a side note, they’re connecting I69 to I465 close to my house and it’s stirred up a coyote problem. Been having to keep an eye on my dog when I let him. Not good.

Yeah, parts of NJ have a serious issue with them, and they seem to be aggressive. The LE here told us they were pretty harmless and there'd never been an attack. They just want to feast on the berries and apples. You just have to check before walking out the door and you have to be careful about closing doors and windows. Hopefully we don't have a problem. Glad your neighbor is OK.

For the first time in my life, I finally saw a bear in the wild tonight. I was sitting at the dinner table when my wife, who was in the backyard, eased the sliding glass door open and loud whispered, "Quick! Come here!" A big black bear was about 30 feet away, just on the other side of the fence. This wasn't one of the 80 lb. cubs. This was at least 250-300 lbs. of bear, maybe more. Pretty cool.

Did you tell the wife the idea is to put more distance or a barrier between you and a dangerous animal? lol

National Park Service just wrapped up their annual Fattest Bear. The winner is called 747 and weighs 1,400lbs. That's a big bear by any standards.

747 was the Fat Bear Champion in 2020. Due to his large size and his assertive disposition, he has ascended to the top of the hierarchy at Brooks Falls. The high concentration of salmon draws a large number of bears to the falls. In order to minimize conflict, bears establish a hierarchy where the most dominant bears gain the best access to fishing locations and mating opportunities. Unlike many bears, 747’s size alone is enough to intimidate most bears to yield their space. His dominance combined with his fishing skills allow him to build up substantial fat reserves for the winter. Even in early summer, he still carries the weight of his previous successes.

Spy pigeon exonerated, set free

A Pakistani pigeon was arrested by Indian law enforcement on suspicion of being a spy. The bird flew over the contentious border and was apprehended due to a suspicious ring around its ankle printed with numbers. The numbers were actually the cell phone number of the pigeon’s owner. After a thorough investigation, the pigeon was deemed not a threat to national security and was set free. “It was just an innocent bird,” police told Reuters. But before you laugh it off, you should know that this wasn’t the first case of avian espionage in the area: In 2016, a pigeon was taken into Indian custody after it was found with a note threatening Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
