The Pass/Fail system, especially for a student's first semester, isn't a crazy idea. Bunches of students are stunned by the college work upgrade and don't adjust in time. In my tenure, my memories say that it would have made little difference in who flunked out of the university but there were a few hidden gems who it would have helped enough that they got through "clean" and still had no "smears" for their ultimate "med-school" or "law-school" applications four years later. Some folks bloom later. I would also have been willing to grade the student "normally" if that was their request at the beginning of class.

What I found funny was that they couldn't even use the term 'fail' but instead 'no credit'. How soft can we possibly get?

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned here yet and they are rightly being skewered for it.

The University of Michigan is launching a pilot program in fall 2027 that replaces traditional letter grades with a "pass" or "no credit" system for first-semester freshmen in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).

You don't want to get caught making fun of Michigan et al for doing something woke. It means ND may copy them in a couple years.

Western Michigan got jobbed so bad, completely unacceptable. Skunkbears did not deserve to win this game.

Skunkbears are really good at winning a lot of things they 100% don't deserve. It's what they're best at.

It's why they have, best case, 1/2 a legit title since the beginning of the Korean War.
Amen, and they love to tout their winning percentage against a lot of opponents, but for many opponents Michigan got like...15 years of free wins basically as they played schools that weren't really organized yet or officially had football programs. Case in point, we first played them in 1887, but didn't ger serious about football till 1909 while Michigan was scheduling high schools still until almost 1900.
