I don't think the Bengals are the only team to watch in this. If Glenn from the Lions gets a HC job, that's another opening for a DC and I do believe he coached with the Lions as well. My money would be he's the next DC with the Bengals though. Their beat has been talking a lot about him lately.

Yes, and they fired him in 2019. He coached under Patricia, not Campbell.

Freeman just got an extension. Golden just got an extension.

He'd be walking into an NFL DC job where the HC is on the hot seat after six years already on the job.

Mike Brown won't pay him more than what he's getting from Notre Dame.

Think, fellas. Instead of immediate knee jerk panic, stop and think about it for a quick moment.

The Colts will be firing Gus Bradley this week, but I don’t think the DC job there is very attractive at any price. Lame duck coach and GM, likely out next year. So that’s one franchise we don’t need to worry about.

You know that’s a big ask……

I thought his kids were going to ND and he wanted to be near them?
They are, one of them anyway. And maybe he does. We know nothing here, to be clear, just fretful speculation.

Personally (and wearing my gold-colored glasses) Golden seem to have a pretty good situation at Notre Dame. Great young players and assistants to work with, minimal recruiting obligations, head coach he (presumably) trusts. And he probably makes more money than he would in the NFL. I don't really know why he'd leave, unless the NFL is his preferred destination. Which... maybe it is maybe it isn't.

I think he's been quoted as saying something along the lines of preferring the NFL because you can use much more advanced schemes, BUT part of the reason he loves coaching at ND so much is because the players are so smart that he doesn't have to dumb down his schemes much. I forget where I read that, but I distinctly remember thinking it was probably a good sign that he might stick at ND for awhile given the other factors (good money, lessened recruiting responsibilities, kid at ND, winning culture, job security).

Hypothetically if Golden does leave to the NFL: would you rather they bring in an experienced top D coordinator or take a swing with Mickens as a first time DC based on what he’s done with the DB’s?
I'm leaving that up to Freeman. I was not in favor of promoting Clark Lea at the time Elko left under BK and that ended up working out tremendously well. Coach Free is going to know better than me whether or not Mickens can take the keys to DC. Is he ready? Is he capable? Does he even want it? Has he had any other programs reach out about making him DC?

All questions Free knows the answers to. I can only hope that the decision would be made taking into account more factors than just recruiting. That I do know. That I trust would be the case.

Again, Al Golden is in a very stable position right now. Cincinnati is anything but that considering a head coach who just finished year six fired half of his staff and is in a crucial situation this upcoming season to keep his job. If they miss the playoffs again, Al Golden is back on the street looking for another job.

So taking a pay cut and jumping from a steady situation directly over the frying pan and right into the fire doesn't seem smart.

You give it to mickens. Freeman was obviously a DC so mickens has him to lean on while he finds his footing

He doesn't do much recruiting on the road does he? Gotta think that helps alleviate the desire to leave. He's able to strictly focus on football which I think is great

No he doesn't, and there is absolutely ZERO of that to worry about in the NFL so it isn't all that relevant.

Notre Dame: job security and higher pay. The Bengals cannot match or exceed either of these. They just fired half of their staff after missing the playoffs for the second straight year. The pressure resides on Zac Taylor to win in 2025. He was hired in 2019 and only six guys have longer tenure than he does right now.

When Golden was LB coach at the Lions, Ben Johnson was the Quality Control guy. If Ben Johnson gets hired for a head coaching job, I'd consider that a more potential threat than Golden going to the Bengals just because it was his previous job prior to ND. Just pure speculation but Al Golden can only have so many NFL connections based on who he worked with previously. It might be that Taylor isn't going to put his ass on the line for the LB Coach of the previous DC he just fired.

This has to be a calculated move considering the pay he's getting from ND and the extension along with the newfound job security of Marcus Freeman. If he's leaving, it's gotta be good. I don't know the Bengals is that good.

Also would be weird replacing the DC at cincy if they were boys

Lou Anarumo just got fired in Cincinnati. Let it begin…
Why would Golden leave here, to go to the same place he left to come here.
He's already been quoted by many sources and said ND Is a better job then that NFL coordinator job.

Something like "ND Is a dream job, and there's no better place to be".

Pay that man.

I remember hearing that too about him preferring to coach ND kids and Dembrock was quoting saying something similar once.

lol this is just wishful thinking on your part. Jim likes his guys.

although I definitely understand why if you were going to burn it down in Indy—next year makes way way more sense than this year.

it’s been advertised that ND has made 14 million so far in the playoffs. I’d expect nothing less from a tactician like Al to get more cash for his services.
