Kind of anticlimactic since it was a fait accompli from the moment Crawford didn't come up with Andino's liner on Wednesday, but Tito Francona's departure was made official a few minutes ago. Contrary to the way in which it is being reported by some outlets, Tito wasn't fired. His contract had expired and his option years weren't pick up by the club.
While I agree that this was the right time for both parties to move on, I have always liked and respected Tito. He oversaw some of the best sports moments of my life. I don't believe he was responsible for Boston's collapse this year, but the collapse was symptomatic of the decayed clubhouse culture in Boston that has necessitated a change in leadership.
Someone will hire Tito this winter, and they'll be getting an excellent skipper. I wish him nothing but the best, although I hope he ends up in the NL so we don't have to face his clubs. My best guess is he ends up in Chicago. As far as the Red Sox, one name I like is Dave Martinez, the bench coach in TB. I'm all set with retreads, such as LaRussa and Valentine, personally.
