I cannot believe we have arrived here. Giving a spanking with a switch is the charge??? Can honestly say I never got the switch, the belt or a wooden spoon were the preferred methods in my house, but this is borderline absurd if that is all this is.

For hitting his kid with a switch... I wish that was all I got as a kid... Says a lot about the state of our society.

Wow that is stupid. At least he is still willing to discipline his kids. I don't agree with a swith but each too there own. This world is going down hill at a fast rate.

Dude, it was spanking his son... AP is not a bad dude.

I work for CPS as a first responder/investigator. Spanking a kid with a"switch" isn't necessarily illegal. A lot of people tell me that they spank/ are spanked on the rear by belts etc. I dont do anything about it. Intervention depends on circumstance (severity, location of discipline, injury, etc). If they are going after him criminally for this, I would assume it was over the top to some degree. Keep in mind CPS and the police often times have different thresholds, and they often work under different courts. CPS can usually initially intervene with lesser evidence. The police usually don't try to prosecute this stuff unless they have fairly compelling evidence.

I am hearing this is not his kid though. That is a little different if true.

Spanking an unrelated child is just odd in my opinion. I guess it depends on a lot of factors in regards to relationship, but I would be hard pressed to spank another person's child.

Just to give the other viewpoint, and honestly I am not strictly against this type of discipline for kids, however: it's a 4 year old and you are hitting him with a switch? Really? 4 year olds should be taught, they test behavior etc. Discipline like this sometimes does go overboard because of anger etc. Lastly, depending on the kid this stuff backfires anyway. Some kids want to get back at you by acting even worse as a poke in the eye to parents.

Again, I'm not against discipline, and not even against some physical discipline, but kids aren't animals. So before saying society is soft and all that, I'll wait to see what the real deal is. Is society still soft if this kid spilled milk on the floor and got the switch to the ass with the skin breaking? Obviously something was there if the mother saw it after a trip back home.

Yahoo article says it's his 11 year old son. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/vikings-star-adrian-peterson-indicted-for-reckless-or-negligent-injury-to-a-child-210420668.html

Child Protective Services confirmed to TMZ that they are working on a case involving Peterson and an 11-year-old boy.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the indictment stems from Peterson disciplining his son with a switch, which is a flexible rod.

I don't know, the TMZ article linked says "4" unless I'm missing something, and has some pictures which show cuts on this kid. TMZ also says he has bruises/cuts on hands, thighs, and buttocks. So what is he doing? Just whacking the kid all over the place? Doesn't sound like "Okay bend over and I'm going to spank you." But again, who knows at this point?

I would have had "extensive" cuts too if my mom was an NFL running back lol

And I personally enjoyed being spanked by family friends, neighbors, etc. cause they were way easier on me than my mom

The pics look excessive. 10+ hits with a foreign object, multiple bruises, and broken skin in multiple locations. It seems like it became more about hurting the kid than correcting the behavior. AP hit all the right notes to get himself in trouble. The DA looks to have a good deal to work with.

Not trying to wade into the debate about whether it is appropriate for parents to hits kids and where the line is drawn between discipline and abuse. Clearly this is different from the Rice situation just based on the fact that there will be some debate over whether this was a sign of the wussification of America or a parent going too far.

But I will say, this week probably (hopefully) can't get much worse for the NFL. I don't know what the appropriate response from the league is to this situation, but I'm fairly concerned they are going to screw it up.

That seems to be the trend. They will probably overreact in response to previously underreacting.

I was going to say I understand a parent disciplining a child...until I just saw those pics. That looks incredibly excessive.

This one will be interesting. I personally don't have an issue with a switch spanking, but the pics do look excessive. It's also a southern cultural thing which I'm sure will come into play. I bet young AP was encouraged to stay on the straight and narrow with a good switch spanking.

As a young parent I agree and you can't let your anger get the best of you! Your child is going to make a mistake and push your buttons and test your limits! He went to far on this one and its just another black eye for the NFL.

Maybe I'm in the minority but that still just looks like a spanking to me. If it's a limb on exposed flesh, it'll break skin. I've had plenty of those, maybe not as many but I'm having a hard time seeing how this is "abuse".

Maybe I grew up in an insensitive household?
