What happens to the ACC in the near-term if ND finds a way to end their scheduling agreement and withdraws in other sports?
Teams look for escape routes. Panic will ensue with FSU and Clemson. The conference will not surve to 2036

Can't lie, that thought crossed my mind today. I think right now we would have significant leverage but it probably is less than what it was prior to the Big Ten's expansion west. But is there a point where the conferences would be indifferent?

Yeah if I'm the B1G, I'm monitoring the landscape and seeing that ND and the ESPN are at odds. ND doesn't seem to want to be partners with the ACC anymore either. So the B1G, along with FOX, may have a ton of leverage over ND if ND does in fact come calling for a spot in their conference.

Except the B1G won't let us maintain our independence. The Big-12 would. Lots of things could happen, but if you made me bet now, I'd guess we end up with the following:
  • ND invokes violation of the "anti-disparagement" clause in its ACC contract, tries to walk for free, ACC sues for the full buyout ($50 million,) we end up paying 50% of that or less as settlement.
  • ACC quickly implodes. Clemson, Miami, and FSU all scramble to find new conferences.
  • ND moves its Olympic sports and basketball to the Big East.
  • ND cuts a similar deal with the Big-12 for 5-6 games a year.
I've also seen speculation that Sankey might offer us a similar deal with the SEC just to keep us away from the B1G and Fox. Though I hope ND holds the line against ESPN. They're ultimately the ones that fucked us.

The more I think about it, maybe we can work some type of similar partnership with Big 10.

1 - NBC is hemorrhaging money from their B10 deal. They way overpaid, and they are desperate for more big matchups.

2 - The size of the B10 and the number of mediocre teams is killing their SOS. OSU and Indiana weren’t punished for it this year bc they were undefeated, but it’s a real problem with so many perennial bottom feeders.

3 - Pete B was literally the chairman of NBC Sports. Assume he still has some pull there.

I think it was strategic that Pete said the beef wasn’t with the teams, it was with the conference.

The ACC will be dead soon. If Pete et. Al. Are smart, they will start working with the big 12 and the remnant ACC TEAMS to create something new from the remains of the ACC, merge it with the Big 12, and be the anchor.

FWIW this guy is a well-followed insider that has been pretty spot on with conference realignment / playoffs

After reading some of the twitter comments (which were pretty laughable) there was a couple posts that kind of hinted that this had been coming for a little while.

Soooooo ...... new conspiracy theory ....... ACC Football knew that we had 1 foot out the door and that's why they directly campaigned against ND.

I have no clue what's going on. It just never made sense why ACC Football would directly attack us incessantly for a month.

Just to be clear, I'm operating under the assumption that this will be the end of ND's Football independence.

If the idea is a short term fix to 1) leave the ACC and 2) maintain Ind. status until something happens in 2030, then I agree, the Big12 could be a stop gap. Avoid ESPN at all costs (Big12 has a partial agreement with them though, yes?).

Entering into the record if he’s right but that guy is full of shit. He got one scoop years ago and now tweets random realignment stuff every week and one will eventually stick.

Burn it down, join the Big East for Olympic sports, and work out favorable scheduling agreements with the SEC, Big 10, and Big 12. If you can’t do that, join the BIG. Burn the ACC down

How is this better than just being in the Big Ten? In this scenario, we see the Big Ten and ACC rivals less frequently than we'd like. What is the point? Independent so that Notre Dame can play Iowa State? Houston? Baylor?

It would be preferable to work something out with the B1G because the ACC has been an anchor on our SOS and the B12 will absolutely NOT help that cause whatsoever. Who knows if TT will be consistent year to year, BYU is not respected whatsoever, and after that it's a merry band of misfits and G5 caliber teams. At least the ACC has some marquee brands that could be good every so often. The B1G has much stronger teams in it than either the ACC or B12.

Also, NBC has a B1G deal in place and we could tell ESPN to fuck off by keeping our home and away games on NBC, or at least most of them. Some of the away games will be on ESPN of course.

Before we agree to any deal with the B1G, be that partial or full membership, they need to unequivocally kill that private interest bullshit they are planning. Notre Dame will not be partnered with any institution that is willing to take Saudi blood money.

Statement is a convenient technicality that nobody believes. You did not outright say ND should be excluded, but you fed into the ESPN hype that it was one or the other and obviously supported the other.

If done over again, the diplomatic approach was A) not to sink to poop throwing B) Take down BYU, Alabama and OU.

I don't know why people keep saying this. How many times this year do teams in those conferences have to say they don't want hard non-cons any more?

Not breaking news to anyone here, but the hypocrisy of the average college football fan being upset about about large conferences and media companies gutting the sport while being gleeful about ND being punished for not wanting to be associated with these vampires is so obviously contradictory that it never fails to shock me when I see people saying "jUsT jOiN a CoNfErEnCe!!!1"

I'm not pretending that ND is an altruistic entity who cares about the goodness of the sport above ND. They are always looking out for their own interests. But I promise you that this is a version of ND that's really attempting to play nice.

If ND wanted to join the SEC and lock up a perpetual ESPN hegemony, they could do it. I guarantee we could be in the evil empire with attractive concessions. The dumbasses on r/cfb with ACC and Big 12 flair who are complaining about our independence are rooting for their own destruction.

Exactly. In the initial rankings we were 7 spots apart, yet they immediately went all in on attacking us. No mention of the 7 teams in between us, just straight to us. Throughout the entire process it felt like a good portion of the Miami media people and the ACC were fine if Miami missed the playoffs just so long as we missed them too. Like they would have been fine with the initial rankings having Miami at 18 so long as we were 19.

I don’t personally give a crap if they join a conference or not but independence seems important to many at ND. Hopefully this changed that.

And Texas, one of the few that was willing to schedule hard non-cons, is openly saying "why would we want to do that going forward". I believe them.
