‘27 DE OL Layton von Brandt (Auburn Verbal)

Kinda wild that we were considered the leader for over 6 months and then the day before find out he isn’t coming. I wonder if the Olu commitment made him feel a certain way once he wasn’t going to be the man of the oline class or there was just a last minute change of offer from Auburn? Either way it sucks to lose out on a stud but if there’s a position I’m not worried about its oline.

I think this is going to be normal going forward. When money is in play, things can change fast and prior relationships and vibes can be overcome. Sometimes it will work for us (Olu) and sometimes against. I think knowing we're not going to be frequently outbid or outworked when we really want a target helps me view the situation more favorably.

Loy said he was a ND silent, Auburn offered his brother, early PT, strong NIL offer and we just got Olu + Hill.
After watching his rivals interview he didn't seem like a good fit to me. Wants to play right away and seems like he wanted gurantees on playing time.

He's also nowhere near developed enough to play at ND "right away". His lower body needs a ton of work to build up strength. There were going to be 5+ grown ass men ahead of him at tackle when he arrived on campus, including a better prospect in his own class (Olu).

I wish him the best at Auburn. They reportedly made a strong NIL offer, and he'll have every opportunity to play early. A full ride for his brother isn't too shabby either! ND will be more than fine here!

More money to deploy elsewhere with some big names left on the board!

I get it for everyone. For Auburn, LVB probably will play early. They have not recruited offensive line well at all in the last 3 classes and are relying on transfers it seems, which means they can offer playing time and are desperate enough to offer money that we can't. LVB just got some money and set up his brother to get some money as well. And then with Olu, Black, Halter, Lambert, and McKeough, there is way more competition for playing time early. And thats just from the last three classes and guys who are higher rated than any of the Auburn recruits.

Henderson, Fakatou, or one of the wide receivers is a bigger need than OT. The money printer has its limits.

Don’t believe this was just about money. The family dynamic and early playing time played a late role. I applaud ND and the staff for not caving to pressure to throw a scholarship at a FCS level sibling. It’s all situational; if that’s Hendersons brother or Simiens brother, you probably take a look at it with 105 scholarships. OT from Delaware played his cards too strong and ND called his bluff, now he’s heading to Auburn (massive culture shock) to a school he visited one time in the spring. Odds of him finishing his career down there? 0-15%

I also really don't get the brother even wanting to go to Auburn. He won't play, he'll be on a bad team and will likely get screwed over by the program at some point. And everyone knows he's only there because he was a bribe to get his brother to come. That's pretty damn lame - like Giannis' brother on the bucks, everyone will look at him like a complete joke.

Edit - Maybe someone can educate me - but do all scholarship players receive a slice of the revenue sharing pie? Or is that still discretionary like NIL and paid out only to certain players as enticements to attend/stay?

This is a recruitment that I would love to hear the behind the scenes on. Cause all the reporting as of late was that Penn St was making a run and then it was no ND withstood that push. Then a day before someone posted that Lou said it’s likely Auburn.
My guess is ND has always led but Penn St made him an offer that he took back to ND and we said we’d match or get close so he set an announcement date. Then I wonder if his agent went around d 1 more time this past weekend and Auburn raised the offer and ND was like screw this we aren’t going to keep doing this.

I have no inside info whatsoever, but I think you just hit the nail on the head.

yep agreed. and this is the exact thing that'll ruin some of these kids in the NIL age. He is taking the bird in the hand and not thinking about his future. A ND degree vs Auburn is apples and oranges and unfortunately it appears he isn't thinking long term, which is totally he and his family's decision. good luck to the kid. We will totally survive this one and be fine.

Driskell posted a bunch of backstory on his recruitment. It's what people have been talking about here. I don't like sharing stuff from premium boards, but I'm sure someone here will.

Get this vibe as well. I feel he wanted to go to ND but probably wanted to take visits. The Olu Olu commitment created an accelerated timeline for prospects such as LvB, Wagner, and the South Dakota kid. LvB may have wanted more money and ND probably wasn't willing to negotiate anymore feeling they had offered what they could

Last week there was also a pod and the South Dakota kid got mentioned. He may have an injury that our staff was concerned over too.

I don’t necessarily think, or want, the staff will allocate the LVB funds to Simien. With the numbers from the 2026 class and the two high end blue chip prospects from the 2027 class, I think that puts you in a comfortable spot.

I think I’d rather the staff use some of that LVB money on Osani Gayles, and assure they continue to bring in high end skill position talent on offense. Continuing to bolster the DL is never bad idea either. This, obviously, is assuming they already have money allocated for Fakatou, Henderson, etc..

The checks and balances in recruiting makes this stuff entertaining. I’m definitely okay with the staff not overpaying for LVB and saying no to his bullshit.
ISD said ND planned to come back around to Simien if LVB did not commit

Wait, so did they stop recruiting him? Irish illustrated pod said we are going to push for Simien more
Trying not to share much premium info, but they said they expected ND to reach out to him today assuming LVB went to Auburn. They had intimated* if LVB committed they were going to stick at 5 OL.

Sounds like he was also upset that ND took Hill and was still pursuing Simien.

If true - and I have no idea if it is - I'm even more confused. ND has been the perceived leader for awhile now, no? So, why not just commit, instead of dragging it out and opening the door for someone like Hill to jump in the class?

Also, isn't Simien an IOL prospect? If so, again, just more confusion.

Anyways, good luck to the kid. We'll be just fine on the OL.

Just a partial piece to this because I agree with a lot of what you said, but there were quite a few scouts that see him as a OG in college due to slow feet and lack of proper bend.
