Is it possible that the press on Gayles is because of any potential feeling of losing JJJ?

I wouldn't say he is being pressed. I think we are confident we land JJJ. Gayles is just someone you don't turn down and seems like a good culture fit

Can someone who's better at breaking down film than me compare Gayles and JJJ? They seem very similar to me.
My initial impression based on what is available of both is you can probably line Gayles up in other positions where as JJJ is an elite slot prospect. Gayles probably projects to slot, but I think you could potentially line him up anywhere just based on his ability and trajectory.

JJJ is a slot guy all the way. Both are very good route runners, too.

Guy is good, what can I say
Actually, this is a new protocol in each classroom at Notre Dame at the start of each school day:

I haven't seen his times or 100Ms or whatever, but dude is a laser in both short and long speed on film. Has all the "suddenness" you can ask for.
He was a big time Junior Olympian in AAU and the regional champ in Jr High and ran 10.76 as a Freshman! He has elite speed but hasn't focused on Track after that year and didn't run at all as a Sophomore.

He could've definitely been one of those 10.3x-10.4x guys by now if he stayed consistent with running.

Agreed, JJJ is an elite slot guy with excellent route running ability and speed, he has very good hands and YAC ability. Gayles is very similar with his home run speed, hands and ability to manipulate the defense with his route running. Gayles is slightly more dynamic/slippery in space and really makes himself hard to bring down. I think he could excel in the "Slot" or at the "Field" WR spots.

I’d shut it down if I were them. We took 5 last year and many appear to be hits. You take 4 studs again and you’re just paying for inevitable transfers.
Absolutely. Are we also taking into the account of the two receivers that we took in the portal.

WR room is absolutely loaded with young talent. Even with expanded roster limits, it'd be difficult to justify taking more than 3 WRs in this class (unless the 4th is Easton Royal IMO).

Washington is probably in the top 3 for Gayles (along with Bama and us). They have picked up 2 4 star WRs recently

Honestly, I would really like to finish the class with 3 WRs (Coleman, Jones, and Gayles). That would be a fantastic finish for that position in this class.

Honestly you almost have to unless another prospect sky rockets up during the season and you land him after missing out on Gayles.

I think the staff would be ok with finishing with 2 WRs since they took 5 last year and are pretty happy with those 5 already from what we have heard.

I think this is coming down to consolidation of funds. ND has narrowed their focus to the very top of their board and positions of need, while other schools are ratcheting up NIL offers for some of the players that ND is going to choose not to fight for. Might make sense for those schools because their needs are different than ND's.

Of course, I don't know how much more NIL money ND has to spend in this cycle, but we know the majority of it is being reserved for an attempt to land:

Julius Jones Jr
Albert Simien
Abraham Sesay
Brayden Parks OR Tyler Alexander
Segun Alexander
Kaden Henderson
Roman Igwebuike
Greedy James OR Andre Hyppolite

Trying to pull the majority of the above group is not going to be cheap. In each case you're talking about competing with as many as 3-4 national brands (other big spenders) for their services.

I don’t buy that so ND is cancelling the visit of a 5 star WR?

It usually doesn't work that way anymore. What often happens is that the agent calls around and says "we have an offer or two for roughly X amount. Will you be in that range? If yes, we'll visit. If not, we're going to pass and not waste your time and ours".

Think of like when you buy a house and their are multiple bidders. The home owner usually doesn't counter everyone, rather they look at the best couple offers they're interested in and narrow their focus to those.

So it's not really the school passing up on the kid, nor the kid passing up on the visit... It usually comes down to valuation, followed by traditional recruiting factors.

Sometimes it works in your favour and sometimes it doesn't. Olu Olobubola is a perfect example. ND made a big offer and swung for the fences. Texas A&M and Miami wanted to wait until after the Mark Matthews decision to see if they'd be willing to counter ND's offer. ND didn't give him the opportunity to wait and basically said "here is the money you want, but the offer is for a limited time." Olu was comfortable with ND and accepted.

Yea this is what I was thinking. Signing him won’t be cheap. I love WRs (coach them), I would gladly take 2 LBs, Simien, and the DL we are pursuing. Allocation of resources
