Both are better than Antonio Carter or Kaleb Smith who had near zero contribution despite lofty expectations.

Did Trevor Speights ever officially participate on the team?

Speights and Smith medically retired before ever playing, so they didn't take up a scholarship let alone a starting spot. Carter was a depth guy and the hit he had on kick coverage against USC alone is more impact than Oben has had. Madden was a starter and former AA. Oben has been a depth piece at best and probably a downgrade from Mensah in all honesty.

They're not making these position moves people are suggesting for a reason. They're there every day and we are not. Very simple. They may well have even tried some of these guys at different spots and based on the reps determined it was a no go.

Let them make the calls based on the personnel and what they've seen with their own eyes.
Don’t the coaches know that we, the members of Irishenvy.com, know the right positional changes to make? I mean c’mon! Surely Chan can step up and fill Mills’ shoes. HE PLAYED DEFENSE IN HIGH SCHOOL!

You don’t just “take” a starting spot. You play as a starter because you’re the best we have at a position. Madden was poor, but not the worst Guard on our roster that year

Madden wasn't poor, just a disappointment that we didn't get a plug and play AA. Madden was a straight-ahead power blocker and we ran a sophisticated scheme he was not well suited for. The staff misjudged him. I'll bet on a different simplified team's blocking philosophy he would have been just fine.

Is Oben better than Bryce Young? Who starts? Baker started over Alt. We've seen time and time again that there are guys who come off the bench who end up performing better than the guy they replace. So no the best don't always start.

Young plays more! Who was better than Madden?

Young has been well managed this year. Getting him into places where he can explode all over the place.
I think he has had about 10 explosions on the field and he has not hit the freshman wall that most of them seem to do.

You said starts not plays more. In '21 Patterson was at C and Correll was a back up Guard to start the season (so before injuries). In '22 Correll was the starting C and Patterson moved to Guard. In retrospect you technically could've had the same starting five OL in '21 and '22. Cain Madden was the worse performing transfer ND has had in recent years considering he was a starter and former AA. People gave Brandon Joseph shit for not producing like Hamilton but Cain gets a pass?

I'll always defend the bigs. No one says Madden was not a disappointment. But the staff continued to believe in him, and so did his teammates (Lugg had a long press conference statement about how Cain was improving and working his butt off every day, and that no one was stronger than him {"He's a beast."}) At the end of the season, NFL scouts were saying that Madden probably would not be drafted, but could be. They projected him as an invited free agent and that's what happened --- the Giants invited him to camp. Madden had played on a smash mouth run offense with very little passing. He struggled with that especially early. He took over 900 snaps for us and gave up one sack, and six hurries --- but also 13 "pressures." His overall offensive grade was 78.3. He didn't stink. He disappointed vs huge over expectations. He was a good likable teammate (you should hear the cheers for him on his pro-day) and did what he could for us.

I love his aggressive play but just needs to know when he needs to give up on a play.

Eh ... I don't know. I like the full out commitment. He was really close.

Plus, Golden was strangling them as usual, so the risk wasn't so great.

Brackets within a parenthesis. OMM has got some grammar chops!
Even Bishop´s gotta be jealous of that...

I thought he was going to redshirt this year when he signed. We’re lucky he was able to give us quality snaps, even if he’s only 1/2 the player he’ll eventually be.
