The starting OL at the end of the year was

Knapp
Absher
Otting
Lambert
Wagner

You're basically losing Wagner and replacing him with Jagusah (maybe Black) and then you have Craig back when healthy. You also have rising Sophomores Augustine and Strebig to go with a 6 man freshman class. Attrition on the OL was expected. Won't be surprised to see some upperclassmen not in the two deep transfer. We'll be fine.

Thanks ND, if you had announced the extension with MFMF Schrauth would've stayed.

We're worse than Michigan and PSU now

When surprising entries and returns happen, I wonder if their position is being noted as the flavor of the week. After seeing the Lions flame out in part due to their interior line, it feels like guards may go early and often this year.

Slightly different topic but freeman needs to re think how the team determines captains. Having it just be a players vote is moronic.

The captains played like dog shit to start the season; no energy, no accountability, and now they’re leaving for the nfl instead of staying for a championship run. NFL is a dream, get it, but Wagner will be lucky to be drafted (glad he’s leaving), but Billy could have played himself into a 2nd round pick. Billy leaving hurts and doesn’t make sense.

Our captain’s are a big reason we’re not in the cfp.

It would be good for ND to have leaders as captains; and not a popularity contest.

True. Freeman needs to make Christian Gray a captain for his incredible effort, dedication to the team, and his relentlessness.

OSUs retention was also largely overrated in terms of projections. Guys like Burke, Sawyer were portrayed as these 1st round picks they kept and that just never matched their play. More equivalent to keeping like Sneed and Shuler. Egbuka was the big one but he stayed to put 1st round film on tape after a year of nagging injuries, not some rah rah OSU thing.
Yep. Also have to keep in mind, those retentions were basically juniors turn seniors, not seniors turn 5th years like Billy.

Yeah they should just rotate the captains on who plays the best in a retroactive look back at those games. The best way to bring the team together is to dictate to them who they should believe the leaders are of the team. Anyone who has played team sports knows that the coaches know more than the players on who they look to when it gets tough.

This has to be a troll bit, right?

I think we agree? You’re familiar with how the nd captains were picked this year right? Anyone that wanted to be a captain went to the front of the room, the players voted on their top 3, the players with the most players votes became captains. Coaches didn’t pick them.

Like you said; anyone who has played team sports realize the coaches know who the leaders of the team are. That’s not what nd did this year. Hinish was captain talking about the violence nd was going to bring before the season; then he gets thrown around like a rag doll again. Wagner got obliterated, Billy wasn’t assignment correct and played soft to start. Shuler played soft, Pauling did nothing. Bowen was terrible. It was an epic fail from our captains to stat the season. They weren’t alone though.

Yeah I’m sure the coaches had zero thumb on the scale.

Yep, freeman wanted 4 captains but increased to 6 because the votes were close.

Captains aren’t only to blame, but they’re a big part. The team flat out wasn’t ready to play to start the season; and the D wasn’t bought in.

I’m just disappointed in Billy not coming back, as a captain, and someone that should be paid a lot at nd and could really improve draft stock.

Do you think the captains were good to start the season I can’t tell?

Undoubtedly a loss for ND in 2026, but there had been a high probability that this may happen for a while. On a positive note, a healthy Absher, while not Schrauth, is still a starting caliber guard and ND will also be looking for Will Black to take a big jump this year. Assuming Jagusah gets backs into playing shape, ND can still field an OL with exceptionally high upside in 2026.

LT: Knapp
LG: Absher
C: Craig or Otting
RG: Jagusah
RT: Lambert

Still lots of good combinations that ND could field in 2026 and the good news is that ND has 6 highly winnable games, featuring three Big 10 opponents, to start the season, prior to their game against Miami. That should give the unit plenty of time to gel and work out the kinks, while solidifying the best combination to protect Carr and open up the run game.
I’ll take what’s behind door #2 please.

I was being sarcastic.

Having the coaches pick the captains would have been alienating. The players understand who the leaders are and who they look to better than the coaches.

Ah you were being sarcastic about ever being involved in team sports. Having the players pick captains is typically not a recipe for success. It’s not how top coaches do it.

Well, if Freeman does in fact leave, we know who our next coach is going to be to finally win us that title. Get ready, sir.

huge L. Not sure how you spin it different. Guy had 1 great game at ND and the rest was pretty mediocre football. Was a net negative for the program

Don’t care if you’re right or wrong, when you find a thing you just repeat it 3, 4, 15 times. You made it clear in the first post you felt that way, I get it.
I’ve got news for you. We haven’t heard it for the last time.
