As someone who doesn't pay too much attention to the later rounds of the MLB draft or baseball recruiting (Haven't had much of a reason to prior to Link coming aboard and revamping the program), is there usually a pattern to what round a player will skip his commitment to go pro, or does it vary?
I know we had a OF elect to go pro after being drafted in the 7th round, this kid is staying after the 18th rd selection. Is it just player preference or is there a blueprint, i.e. first 10 rds or something along those lines?
They've made some changes to the draft and bonus pools lately and I don't really follow it that close, but I think it varies a lot player to player depending on who drafted them and where in the draft they went. Each team has a set "bonus pool" of money they can offer their picks and not all teams have the same amount. The Pirates had $8.5 million this year compared to the Dodgers at $2.4 million. There are also limits per round that teams can offer those picks. https://www.mlb.com/news/2021-mlb-draft-bonus-slots has a breakdown of all of those numbers for this year. I would guess most kids/families have a round/dollar amount in their mind going in to the draft that they would take, and if not they go the college route.
