As someone who doesn't pay too much attention to the later rounds of the MLB draft or baseball recruiting (Haven't had much of a reason to prior to Link coming aboard and revamping the program), is there usually a pattern to what round a player will skip his commitment to go pro, or does it vary?

I know we had a OF elect to go pro after being drafted in the 7th round, this kid is staying after the 18th rd selection. Is it just player preference or is there a blueprint, i.e. first 10 rds or something along those lines?

They've made some changes to the draft and bonus pools lately and I don't really follow it that close, but I think it varies a lot player to player depending on who drafted them and where in the draft they went. Each team has a set "bonus pool" of money they can offer their picks and not all teams have the same amount. The Pirates had $8.5 million this year compared to the Dodgers at $2.4 million. There are also limits per round that teams can offer those picks. https://www.mlb.com/news/2021-mlb-draft-bonus-slots has a breakdown of all of those numbers for this year. I would guess most kids/families have a round/dollar amount in their mind going in to the draft that they would take, and if not they go the college route.

That's interesting, thanks for the info Clash.

The fact that Link's boys are being poached by the MLB draft speaks volumes to the job he's done. I know he said he's sticking around this year, but really hoping Jack pull out the checkbook and gives this man a well-deserved raise.

I haven't followed ND baseball much since Samardzija was pitching, but this past season was a ton of fun to follow.

Clashmore hit it on the head at the very end (everything else was good too).

The decision to leave or go pro comes down to money. For each player, it's going to be different based on what they want based on whatever they put an emphasis on or how much they need the money.

So for example: You're signed to play at Notre Dame. To pass on 3 (or more) year at Notre Dame, you have a dollar figure in mind that would be worth more than what you'll get out of Notre Dame. If you get it, peace out Notre Dame.

The first 10 rounds of this draft were essentially guys that were going to go pro and that's why there were drafted where they were. Teams/players had deals basically done before they were drafted so the teams knew they weren't going to college.

For Joey Spence, the 18th round didn't provide the dollar figure he needed to get to pass on a degree from Notre Dame.
