The issue ND is going to need reconcile is that if they refuse to take undergraduate transfers for academic reasons then they need to commit to spending more money on high school recruits. You have to do one or the other, and right now we are not competitive with Oregon/Ohio State/Michigan or even second tier SEC schools with what we're willing to do for HS players.

Examples from this year include Ivan Taylor and Deuce... we land both if we spend the money. Also, every single WR we missed on was a $$ problem.

I think Leonard pretty much said that since he wasn't a grad transfer, a bunch of his credits didn't transfer... but ND let him in anyway.

Idk if that's a sign of a general shift in the football team getting non-grad transfers, or if Freeman and Co. successfully went to bat with the admin for an exception. My understanding is that in the past, a guy with a bunch of credits that wouldn't transfer was pretty much a hard "No" from the university in terms of accepting the transfer.

Hopefully the team has some more wiggle room as a whole in that regard, and it wasn't just an exception to get the QB in.

The issue is he came from an elite academic institution like Duke. With Brandon Joseph, it was the same thing coming from Northwestern. ND doesn’t seem to have issues taking undergrad transfers, who are close to getting their degree, that come from elite academic institutions. Duke, NW, Stanford, Vandy, etc. They need to be able to take undergrad transfers who aren’t just transferring after their freshman year or are close to their degree from an elite institution, like Leonard and Joseph. Stanford took a kid who was 2 years out of HS who spent 1 year at Northern Iowa and 1 year at Wisconsin. If Stanford, which is a better school than ND can do that then there’s no excuse for ND not being able to do that.

...."the issue" is an interesting way to think about all this. Also, let's be perfectly clear here...Notre Dame is not accepting undergrad transfers from SEC schools not named: Florida/Vanderbilt/Texas until or unless they make athlete specific majors to get kids around the private school admissions. That is almost certainly not ever going to happen.

Yep. “The issue,” such as it is, is that Notre Dame is not going to accept transfers who won’t be able to graduate on schedule with a degree that is offered at Notre Dame. (So, not phys ed or criminal justice).

It’s not as much about the academic caliber of their previous school as what they studied there and if they have enough transferable credits to finish a major (and ND’s various core requirements) in four years. Even Riley Leonard, who had a legit major at Duke, struggled to qualify by his own account. A kid three or four semesters into a phys ed major at random Big 12 school just isn’t going to make it.

Idk what is true anymore. Multiple people have said Tim said $15mil.
Maybe people are sharing the same bad rumor?
Brice has said $7-9
Brice wrote an article where he mentioned that multiple sources said Georgia’s 2024 payroll was $12 Million. On the II podcast he said that ND’s payroll was “half or slightly more than half of Georgia’s”, which would be around $7 Million.

No way it was a total is only 7 million. There were multiple sources that said RL was paid 2 million alone

Who else do you think was getting paid and how much? There were no high profile transfers besides him, everyone else was coming for free or peanuts.

A good amount of money was spent on Watts, Mills, and Cross. Small amounts were spent on a few incoming players and returning players. Most guys with big NIL kick 10% back to a team fund so everyone gets a bit.

I heard that some guys (Love in particular) got bumps / deals / etc. mid season due to production and the fact that other teams were going to be all over trying to get them to transfer. All things considered I think the $7M number was pretty close to accurate to start the year, no idea what it is now.

I think, guess really, that Riley got a payday to transfer.

I have seen the sentiment from Bud on Cover 3 that Auburn got “unlucky” with this portal. They were going to go all in on a QB and class but the portal is weak so Jackson Arnold is now “all in”. I think ND to some extent is the same. ND felt like they could go “all in” without having to pay a QB. This overall portal class just isn’t special though. There isn’t deserving players for 15 teams to throw money at. Take a step out of IE, checkout a 247 board for a few teams, very few teams are beating their chest on their portal class so far.

From Singer re the portal and ND:

Things can change but Blue & Gold doesn't expect any of the quarterbacks to transfer out. Carr ain't going anywhere. Kenny seems happy. Angeli is here to compete. Again, things can change but that's where things stand now.

— Notre Dame GM Chad Bowden had exit interviews with players today. I don't know if it was all today or they're spread out across the week or what. But that started today.

— I believe there will be less players leaving than you'd expect. We're at three from today (Sam Pendleton, Jayden Thomas and Deion Colzie), and I'd imagine there will be more, but I don't think there will be 10-12 like people on the board think. These kids want their ND degrees if they're close. But we'll see.

— I'm not going to be answering questions about individual players staying or leaving. But I can tell you that I was told Jadarian Price is staying. I got a lot of questions about him today, and I do believe he's staying at ND.

The Covid extra year guys are basically all gone now.
