Yeah one of the most wrong I have been on a prospect. Coaches were super high on him and he ended up flat out not being able to play. Just wasn't athletic enough despite having elite size/speed/frame for guard.

Tosh Baker is another one where he checked all the boxes and then just... couldn't pass block.

If he didn't win the job, absolutely. Just in general though the reason ND ended up with zero Top 50 consensus recruits is that we are flat out not paying anything close to market rate for HS players right now. Meanwhile Michigan shelled out $13M for a QB, Bama outbid a bunch of people for Taylor, etc.

Either that course corrects or ND is simply not going to ever land another top national prospect. You can't sell good coaching and education anymore when people are making NFL money in college.

Just to play Devil's advocate...is the reason we were so successful this year though was that we paid enough of our older guys to stay? Almost the Purdue basketball model...basically saying an X Watts is not somebody would have ever paid in HS if that makes any sense.

The issue is that the team that beat us in the NCG is doing both. They spent a lot of money retaining their roster, but they're also getting five stars to replace those guys when they leave.

I do wish we could've figured out a way to get Jayden a TE role. Feels like he could've been an interesting tweener that was too fast to put an LB on. I'm sure the coaches have already had and dismissed that thought for good reasons though.

This is why you can’t get on Brown about WR recruiting you can only do so much if the top guys want money and we aren’t handing it out

To play devil's advocate, there's no way Deuce would win the starting job as a freshman. If he started next year for ND, he's so raw that they'd be lucky to finish .500 and he wouldn't have a backup at the position because Carr/Minchey/Angeli would have all dipped.

He won't start at Auburn either, but he's at least a culture fit for Auburn. He's a waste of money for ND.

Yes, and everyone else is following. You still have to execute (like OSU, Texas, Oregon did), but everyone's in the game now.

I am once again asking ND to make it easy for fans to contribute to NIL - especially to help retain the guys that we know can produce.

This is simply an outsider's perspective but the problem with ND not spending top money (if that is true) has nothing to do with them not having the money. ND seems to be afraid of appearing like a football factory. There was a lot of talk about Ohio State spending $20 million on their roster. They don't care and are probably proud of the fact they paid that much. Feels like ND would be mortified if they had that label. NIL is just the latest example of them not wanting to lead the way and appearing to care too much about football. Getting the NC game is kind of a double sword. Shows that they really don't need to throw top dollars around to compete.

Brady Quinn claimed to some TV commentator that Notre Dame competes successfully with everyone on the money side, and does not lose players they want because of that. I don't know if that's true, but he seemed very near to being visually pissed off when the guy made those allusions.

Both are true.
ND is doing "good". ND is not doing "the best".

If Notre Dame reinvests half of what they make by being in the playoffs back into the program then they would be in the semis/championship game every single year. Seems like a smart business investment to me.

He said this on Greg McElroy's podcast, if anyone wants to listen to it. But he didn't provide a specific number or say that "we're close to 20 million," it was more of a general "ND competes with the top teams in NIL" point.
