If prestigious bowls outside the CFP existed, they probably wouldn’t have opted out! Is that so hard for people to comprehend? Matt Brown did a piece on this. People are not mad at ND for opting out. ND is a mirror that they are just now looking in that the CFP is ruining the sport from what it was and this was the event that has caused people to see it. You’re not mad at ND.

I will once again ask - where is the outrage about the other ~7 teams that declined bowl invites? This has nothing to do with the sanctity of the bowl system, and is just people who have and always will hate ND taking the opportunity to dunk on us, or people generating rage clicks. That's it. Who gives a fuck

I think this is a mistake. They should have let this go forward, and let him publicly explain the process.
It's totally a public safety thing. Have you ever seen a tar and feathering? Me neither but I am watching Ken Burns's revolutionary war documentary and it seems like something we want to avoid.

There were three major things in the public discourse after the BC game:

1) ironically, Head to Head. We argued it mattered most. Guess who argued that it didn’t matter at all?

2) we also argued that we REALLY need a playoff. This was pre BCS, and I think maybe even bowl coalition or even predated that, I don’t remember. But guess who was pro playoff and who wasn’t…

3) rematch talk. The Florida State people really wanted a bowl rematch AFTER the ND game. But then of course immediately changed thier tune after the BC game. The ND fan response was generally, ok, we will win again, while guess who repeated ad nauseum that FSU would wax us next time.

It was a dark month. It felt worse than this, frankly.
I remember watching the Cotton Bowl win over aTm thinking ”ND should be on track for a share of the title”. This was similar to what a lot of us (and more importantly the coaches & players) thought about making the final CFP on Saturday night before the rug got pulled. That’s how it felt back then.

It may be too late to do now after PB’s underwhelming PC but I have to give credit to Matt Fortuna on his suggestion that Bevaqua should’ve used that platform to announce that ND was purchasing NC rings for the coaches & players from the 1993 team & that he wanted to focus on that celebration as the media finally agree that H2H matters.

I'll tell you what better happen this bowl season: Every member of the ESPedophiliaNetwork staff who criticized ND for declining bowl invites better be set-up with a camera in their living rooms live streaming them watching every game which they aren't covering in-person or in-studio. I want to see Stephen Ass Smith watching ODU vs South Florida; Louisiana vs. Delaware; Kennesaw State vs Western Michigan; etc.

Every damned one of them. All of them. And if not live, better have video of you watching the replays.

Can’t believe I’m typing this but SBT’s Mike Bernardino made a good point about Saban. Said he never said anything emphatically regarding ND vs Miami until the final Saturday (Championship Weekend). He said J Love only gained 33 yards on the game. Miami dominated the LOS. Miami kicked ND’s ass. Since when is a 3-pt game that was won on a FG w/ less than a minute left an “ass kicking”?

But Saban has the gravitas to be the arbiter of everything football. Later that day Hunter Yuracek urged everyone on the committee to go watch that game again. Don’t forget Cristobal coached four years under Saban helping him to a NC. Mario is not the best at speaking so Coach Saban came to the rescue.

Characterizing the game that way definitely affected the outcome for ND/BAMA/Miami.

And as far as “ass kicking”. We ND fans all loathed the fact that Denbrock only had J Love carry the ball 10 times so it’s not RB’s fault. That was the biggest gripe by us on the Post Game thread. His definition of “ass kicking” is cited below:

Jeremiyah Love - 10 for 33 (3.3 ypc); 4 receptions for 26 yds (6.5 ypr)
Jadarian Price - 6 for 45 (7.4 ypc)

As a team ND rushed for 93 yds on 28 carries (3.3 ypc). Miami as a team rushed for 134 yds on 38 carries (3.5 ypc)

Total offense was 314 yds for ND & 339 yds for Miami.

How the hell is that an “ass kicking”? Two examples of ass kickings that jump to mind from this year are the two games that bookended Bama’s season. FSU 31-17 over Bama and UGA 28-7 over Bama.

Revisionist History. And Saban knows better.

When they moved Auburn above ND I think most of us knew it was shady but viewed it as a “hedge”. In retrospect they decided it with that. Example this video was prior to Saturday’s game:

Exact same verbiage as Yuracek would use days later. This isn’t someone with an opinion that turned out right. It was a script.

I didn't see Saban on Saturday, but of the guys talking during the selection show on Sunday, it felt like he was the most coherent and sympathetic to Notre Dame. Basically said "All three of them should be there. Being locked into these G5 teams is the problem."

Now, maybe that's too little too late, and at no point did Saban, wearing his crimson blazer, say anything about us being more deserving than Bama. But he was better than Herbstreit repeating ESPN talking points about how Alabama shouldn't be "punished" for their "bonus game," and how you have to consider head-to-head now that BYU is out from between Notre Dame and Miami.
