Is it from ESPN? They’re in the SEC so it’d make sense from themNCAA tourney reveal came out. We’re the 4th one seed. I can’t figure out how in the world Texas would be a higher one seed than us. Makes no sense.
No it’s from the selection committee. They put out an early reveal. They did it early in Sunday. Doesn’t make sense to have Texas ahead of us. We have three top 10 wins. 6 quad 1 wins and we have head to head over Texas. Is it from ESPN? They’re in the SEC so it’d make sense from them
She did. Lawson went one or two more plays on route to an epic beat down. Was passively watching the game and swore I saw Miles signal to Lawson that she needed to call a timeout. Seen a couple mentions of it on Twitter but anyone have a clip? Was savage
absolutely ridiculous. it’s like they are setting ND up to lose one of the number 1 seeds. did they give a rationale for having ND at 4?No it’s from the selection committee. BeforeWas the selection before or after South Carolina got rolled?
No, not that I sawabsolutely ridiculous. it’s like they are setting ND up to lose one of the number 1 seeds. did they give a rationale for having ND at 4?
She actually gave the TO signal on two successive scoring playsWas passively watching the game and swore I saw Miles signal to Lawson that she needed to call a timeout. Seen a couple mentions of it on Twitter but anyone have a clip? Was savage
I agree with most of what you’re saying. However, I think the offense was much more balanced this game against Duke. I think there was more movement then in previous games and a heavier emphasis of working through the post. Hannah did a much better job of looking for teammates and you saw that early with westbleds production. My opinion of the game varies slightly from some here but generally in line. Kara Lawson is a fine coach, and her teams play very hard. They, in that character, are very much like herself. She was also a very intelligent player, making herself better than her physical gifts. Her team's like that too. That sort of coach and team is hard to play, because you have to "up" your effort and mental intensity and use your superior talent to get them shaken a little. This is the change that we had after the (I'm guessing "unpleasant") halftime "conversations."
We came out ready to play defense after halftime and Soni (especially) and Hannah and King as usual were in their element. The difference was that Olivia decided to stop being a "matador" and Maddy stop being a big "little girl" for a few minutes. We crushed their weak offense with our defense and blitzed away. Duke didn't quit (Lawson would never) but it was too late and their incompetent scorers couldn't catch us. Our fourth quarter was NOT a romp though, just a stand-off.
Our team needs to be active (all 5 active) on defense, all the time. Our set-up offense, frankly, stinks a good bit of the time, and even looks stagnant. This is especially true since opponents know that they can double-team Hannah and Olivia on ball screens and force them to pick up the ball --- our offense goes to full stop then. The "secret" WOULD be to move it more rapidly to a competent post with an offense, or reverse the ball more rapidly to Soni. Neither happens much. I wish that Ivey would involve King at those times and give her the green light for in-the-paint attacks.
We're obviously better than Duke. Duke, however, is a good team with an excellent coach. Amazing that they have won such a high percentage with such poor over-all offensive skill. If that one guard had not, for her, been unusually hot, they barely have scored ten points in the first half. As for us, well, we muddled through it. We are, I'm sure spending a LOT of practice time trying to teach Koval to hesitate "just the glimmer of a moment", get hard hands on the ball, Zen settle, and THEN lay it in the basket. Her feet and body leans are awkwardly all over the place at least 50% of her possessions down low.
As to my favorite player, Soni played great. The game, however, once again demonstrated the one thing she is not good at: She needs to have something (anything) to do when she finds herself with the ball in scoring position close to the basket and in a "physical" situation. She doesn't have that kind of "in contact strength" to bully anything, so needs some trick or gimmicks (like Hannah does all the time.) She'd score ten more points a game if she did.
Very fair points. The hard hedge was tough to deal with in the first half. I didn’t see it as much in play in the second half. But I could see a team like South Carolina play this way if we see them in the tournament. Or a team like NC St, who is also known for their defense. We’ll be interesting to see how the coaches adjust to it in the future.I agree with your views BabyIrish, but I'd add this warning to the coaching staff: Lawson knows this. So she had her ball screen defender hedge much more strongly than teams usually do, creating a mini-trap. If Miles cannot split the trap (since she goes into it slow, she usually can't), she has to pick up the ball ---> thus no effective loose space to drive. Hannah should be more effective splitting, but we didn't do it that much with her. This also asks our screener to have good hands, since a release pass must be quick and shorter than usual. It also means that other teammates should show greater urgency in hard cuts to present passing targets. (just like any beat-the-trap offense.) Lawson knew she could get away with this hard hedge defense because Miles goes too slow (usually) to split or sprint all the way over the top. All you're trying to do is make the dribbler pick up the ball. Picking up the ball means no slashing drive off the dribble. It also means the offense is never in rocking chair relax-and-survey mode. To do this you need defenders who want to, defenders in shape, and depth. Most teams don't have this. Duke "wants to" and seems in shape. No real depth.
I can recall an old Detroit Pistons team which featured the (probably) best defender to ever play in the NBA (Big Ben Wallace), who would take the hard hedge to maximum lengths forcing NBA guards to retreat all the way cross court and towards the half court line, completely flummoxing whatever offense was called.
There will be another seeding reveal on Thursday. If we beat NC State on Sunday I’d have to think we’ll have moved up.Women polished off a pretty bad Miami team tonight 82-42. Just a few games left before the postseason begins. #1 seed for the ACC tourney almost locked up. Top seed for the NCAA in question after that reveal last weekend but if we win the ACCT I can’t see anything below the top three. Only one team can win the BiG and SEC so they are they only teams that could be justified to be ahead of a 2 loss ND squad imo. Or are they just going to ignore head to head?
Agree. That reveal was before South Carolina got spanked. There will be another seeding reveal on Thursday. If we beat NC State on Sunday I’d have to think we’ll have moved up.
Also if we beat NC St, we’ve locked up the regular season championship. If we lose then we have to beat FSU and Louisville to win outright.
